Chapter Ten

Somehow the Greenie had made it to the bonfire without being murdered by Gally.

They shared a tense interaction shortly after the Greenie was introduced to Chuck. He had wandered off towards one of the walls of the Maze, and Gally - a stickler for the rules - roughly shoved him to the ground so he didn't end up inside when the doors closed.

The Greenie didn't seem too grateful for this, whirling on the boy in a panic, but he seemed to calm down - mainly because he was confused - when the Maze doors shut. Gally promptly told the boy he'd let him leave next time, and Ada chased after him to scold him furiously.

Things seemed to calm down when the bonfire was lit up.

Gally got drunk, sliding onto the log beside Ada, and slinging his arm around her shoulder. He barely realised he was being affectionate, but the girl found he was doing it perfectly, rather than making her uncomfortable.

The girl couldn't help but notice that Minho and Newt's feud had continued, and they were still not speaking. No one else had picked up on it - Ada found that she was surrounded by idiots - but it was plainly obvious for anyone to see.

Despite the fact Newt was sending Minho glances continually from where he was near the outskirts of the crowd, Minho didn't look his way once, almost like he was making a point of not doing so. Why was he so angry at Newt?

Ada was determined to find out.

Now, she had to think carefully about the way she went about it. Of course, Minho admitted to being smitten with the blonde boy, but Ada knew that Newt was far more likely to let down his guard to her if something was going on. He seemed to be far more in touch with his emotions.

She found the boy sat with the Greenie, a little detached from the rest of the group, talking away to the confused boy. She politely asked the newbie to find Chuck so she could speak with Newt, and she could feel the second-in-command's eyes on her as she watched the dark haired boy wander off like a lost puppy.

"What's all this about then?" He asked her suspiciously, missing the glance she took at Minho, who for the first time that evening was actually looking at Newt.

"Minho."

Newt immediately looked away from her and to the floor, taking a swig of his drink as if for courage. She took this as a bad sign.

"Why aren't you guys talking?"

He groaned in irritation, running a hand through his hair and messing it up, before chancing a glance at the Runner. Minho was now immersed in conversation with Ben, laughing away as if nothing was up.

"He maybe kinda confessed that he likes me."

Ada nearly choked on air then. Of all the things she expected him to say, it wasn't that Minho actually admitted his feelings to Newt. And clearly, it seemed to have gone badly.

She was confused by this. From the way Newt had been acting all evening, she would've expected him to feel the same way.

"Well, what happened then?" She asked expectantly, but Newt was staring at her in awe.

"You're not surprised." He stated, but it seemed more like a question than a fact.

She shrugged, face going red as Newt began to figure out why. He shoved her shoulder lightly, shaking his head in disapproval.

"You knew. You knew, and you didn't tell me!"

She let out a harsh laugh then, thinking back to the flirtatious remarks they would throw at each other constantly. She chose not to bring it up when they were obviously not on speaking terms.

"He wasn't that secretive about it, Newt."

He pouted, sulky over the fact he couldn't pick up Minho's hints. And if Ada was being honest, they weren't even hints because it was that obvious.

"You never answered my question." She pushed, softly and quietly, because Newt had seemed to retreat into himself.

"I like him too." He mumbled, barely audible.

He looked - and sounded - embarrassed, but Ada couldn't understand why. Having feelings shouldn't be embarrassing. But she was also a hypocrite in that sense; because she'd never admit her growing feelings for Gally.

"So you told him that? Then why are you both so frosty with each other?"

One look from Newt to the girl allowed her to catch on. He hadn't told him that, that was the issue.

What an idiot.

"Newt!" She hissed, sympathy and upset for Minho powering her scolding of the boy. "Why on earth didn't you bloody say that?"

"Because we don't know what's going to happen! We don't know anything, Ada." Newt shook his head then, and she caught sight of the frustrated tears in his eyes. "I don't want to allow myself to catch feelings, because something'll happen to him - I know it. He'll get hurt, or die, and I'll be heartbroken. And I can't put myself in that situation, I can't handle it."

Newt was making a lot of sense. Ada could imagine why he wouldn't want to put himself out there, not when things were so uncertain for everyone, but there was one thing she was suspicious that he had failed to notice.

"Newt, you don't think you'd already be heartbroken if he died?" Newt didn't respond to this, and Ada gathered that he hadn't considered it. "You already have caught feelings, so you might as well let yourself be happy right now. Dating or not dating, you'd suffer the same either way if one of you died. But the difference is, you'd be happier if you were dating him when you were alive."

She knew she was being brutally honest, but as she was advising him, the words she was saying related just as much to the way she felt about Gally as the way Newt felt about Minho. And then - as stupid as it sounded because it was so painfully obvious - it all finally clicked into place.

I like Gally.

Newt was looking thoughtfully across the bonfire to Minho, and Ada knew that her words had resonated with him. Suddenly, he stood up from the ground and without a word, marched over towards the Runner. The girl watched in triumph as he spoke nervously to him, before the pair disappeared to chat privately in the Deadheads.

Success.

Ada spent the next ten minutes eating at the bonfire with Alby. The leader was blabbing on about Sloppers, and the Greenie, and about a hundred other things that she was pretending to listen to. She was highly distracted.

Now that she had figured out her feelings for Gally, she was trying to decide what to do about it. She could tell him. About a thousand scenarios flashed through her mind then: every one ending with Gally rejecting her. She decided to settle on keeping it quiet for now.

She considered telling Minho - since she was the first to know about his crush on Newt - but then she remembered how much he'd tease her about it. She couldn't tell Newt, because he'd simply tell Minho. She thought about telling Frypan; but then remembered how close he was to Gally, and how he was likely to tell the boy about it.

So she settled on telling no one for the moment; oblivious to how obvious she was about her feelings.

Since her eyes were on the Builder, she noticed the boy 'accidentally' knocking another boy - who he was fighting - into the Greenie who just so happened to be wandering past. She knew why he was doing it, but couldn't help thinking that the Greenie wouldn't take it well. He didn't seem to be keen on Gally so far.

"What do you say Greenie?" Gally offered, as if he hadn't been planning it.

The Greenie blinked back at him blankly, before looking around the growing circle surrounding both him and Gally. His eyes fell on Ada, who had a small smile playing on her lips, urging him on.

An eruption of cheers rang out as the Greenie moved forwards into the circle, and Gally rolled up his sleeves triumphantly. He cockily told the newbie of the rules, as Ada rolled her eyes, wondering why she even had feelings for the overconfident boy.

Especially, when the Greenie seemed to be holding his own.

Normally, Gally wouldn't try as hard as he could when fighting the Greenies. But, this one seemed to be fighting back harder than the Builder was used to. So, he was forced into trying his hardest; just like he would've had to with Ada if she hadn't punched him.

Newt had made his way back from the Deadheads, Ada had noticed, as he was the one with the Greenie when he was ambushed by Gally. It was then that Minho sidled into the crowds beside the girl, keeping a straight face, but she could see he was hiding a grin.

"You good?" She turned away from the fight - in which Gally had shoved the Greenie to the floor for the third time.

Minho nodded nonchalantly, keeping his eyes on the fight, but it was obvious that he was bursting with energy. Ada knew she only had to wait three seconds before Minho got too excited not to tell her. And she had a feeling she knew what it was involving.

Before she could try to pry the gossip out of him, he had spilt it all out in one long sentence,

"So Newt told me that he likes me, and now we're maybe kind of dating?" His eyes widened in realisation and then he went on to say, "Shuck! I didn't tell you I confessed yesterday-"

"-Newt filled me in." She replied with a smirk, as Minho blushed with an eye roll to distract from how he was flustered.

She had never seen him like this, but she was happy that Newt made him happy. It was obvious they were made for each other.

"I'm proud of you for finally admitting it." She teased, and before Minho could begin to argue about how he hadn't liked him for that long, their attention turned back to the fight.

Ada watched in concern - and amusement - as the Greenie managed to outsmart Gally and send him flying onto the ground. This set the crowd off in laughter, and the Greenie swelled up with pride, taking his eye off the humiliated boy on the floor to gloat.

"Not bad for a Greenie huh-"

Just as the Greenie smugly boasted to the crowds, Gally had twisted around on the floor and kicked at his calf, shooting him down on the ground. Just like planned, his head hit the floor, and Ada winced at how heavily it smacked against the ground.

She was starting to think Gally's methods were a little dangerous.

Ada also noticed that there was a oddly heavy tension between the pair, almost like they had some sort of feud between them. It didn't make sense to her. They had just met; how could they already be fighting or disagreeing over something to that extent?

Gally was up on his feet again, beaming down at the boy with a knowing smirk. He spun around to scour the crowds for Ada, finding her eyes and making her heart leap. He shrugged as he glanced to the Greenie and then back to her, making her shake her head mock disapprovingly.

When the Greenie leapt up in an epiphany, "Thomas. My name's Thomas!", Ada was the first to shake his hand and greet him by name. She was surprised to see that Gally was one of the many to do the same, suddenly acting civil and polite with the boy after their aggressive fight.

And Ada was right, there was a strange tension between Gally and Thomas that both boys were well aware of. What she didn't know, was that it was over her.
