Chapter Nine

To say that Gally and Ada were close now, would be a complete understatement. They were inseparable.

Ada was careful in sorting out her workload in a way that gave her time to spend time with Gally, and also gave her time watch him as he worked. Because she had come to realise: he was very attractive.

She was certain that she was very subtle in thinking this. However, Frypan easily caught the glances she would give him at breakfast and dinner, the way her cheeks would flare up at the mention of him, and the flirtatious comments they sent back and forth.

He hadn't said anything to her about it, knowing that she'd be quick to deny it, but he had talked to Gally. And he then realised it was probably worse to ask Gally.

Upon the question of his feelings towards the girl, Gally immediately froze up. His cheeks instantly flared up red, and he began busying himself around the kitchen to try and distract Frypan from his embarrassment. It took a few moments for him to furiously deny his crush on the girl. Surprisingly, he didn't get angry.

There had been a number of times where he had gotten angry.

Ada found herself being dragged into his messes, being the one to bail him out of many drunken arguments or silly Builders squabbles. She didn't particularly mind; there was something relaxing about calming him down, especially when she saw the soft smile that made its way onto his face after she spoke gently to him.

She had grown to notice that he acted differently around her than he did to the others.

When they were together, Gally was always much more open, and talkative, and sweet. However when he was with the other boys in the Glade, he had built some sort of wall up, blocking them out from the real him. He was always only tough, intimidating and quite often closed off.

He did joke and chat with them at bonfire and other gatherings, but it was different. It would be about surface level things, the chatter only light-hearted and his laughter only quiet and sometimes quite forced.

Not to mention what he was like during Gatherings. His cold exterior even extended to Ada during these meetings, as if he had a duty to block everyone out and argue against things just for the sake of it.

It made her a little suspicious - and sad even - but she never brought it up. Although she and Gally talked about a lot of things, she knew that he wouldn't address this behaviour. Hell, he may not even notice it.

It had been a month since Chuck's arrival, and the small boy couldn't be more obvious in his delight of no longer being the newbie. Ada couldn't blame him - some people didn't stop calling her Greenie until after Chuck got there.

"Hey," Gally greeted, as he fell into step with the girl.

She flashed him a smile in return as they wandered towards a spot on the grass. It was an unspoken recurring thing, for the pair of them to sit for a while near the Deadheads and talk.

"You know what I realised?" He asked suddenly, stopping her before they could sit. She whirled around to face him, posing him a questioning glance as a smirk made its way onto his lips.

"It's our one month anniversary." He teased,  referring to the fight they had at the bonfire one month ago.

"Anniversary?"

However, Ada's mind went straight to relationships, and then short-circuited.

Her face grew hot, flushing red, as her hands fumbled with one another. She looked up at him with wide eyes, wanting to question his word choice further, as he only stared at her in amusement.

And then she realised what he really meant: Just a silly joke about their fight. And he realised what she had thought of: a relationship. She assumed that he meant they were in a relationship.

As soon as he realised she had picked up on the joke a moment too late, his face suddenly paled. All she could wonder was, how was I supposed to think of anything else but a relationship? Gally looked nervous too in that moment, opening his mouth to speak, although he had no idea how to make the tension dissipate.

The Greenie alarm began to blare, making Gally firmly clamp his mouth shut. Using it as an excuse to leave, Ada avoided eye contact with the boy, jogging over towards the Box with the other boys from around the place.

She slipped into the crowd beside Newt, who looked from Gally to her with a knowing smile. She subtly hit him on the arm, making him chuckle as they both turned to look at the Box that just reached the top of the elevator shaft.

Two of the Builders leaned forwards to open the doors of the Box, revealing their Greenie sprawled on the floor, with his hand up in front of his eyes to shield the light. He looked like a curious boy: about sixteen or seventeen, with sharp features, dark hair, and confused eyes.

Chatter and laughter already began to rise up in the group, as people shared their guesses on what role the boy would take on in the Glade. Ada found herself frowning as she heard the way some boys used the Sloppers job as an insult.

They're quite helpful, actually.

The Greenie's eyes latched onto Ada, eyebrows shooting up and mouth falling agape just slightly as he seemed to grasp that she was the only girl of the group. That, and the fact he found her rather pretty.

Gally seemed to notice the Greenie's interest in Ada, stepping forwards from the group and standing with a hardened glare. He jumped down into the Box threateningly, to laughs from the other boys, as he leant down towards the other boys face and grabbed his shirt.

"Day one Greenie, rise and shine."

Ada didn't know how she could tell, but she knew that Gally already didn't like this Greenie.

The boy was chucked onto the grass, clearly still disoriented and confused from the trip up in the Box, but not being given a moment to breath. As he seemed to gain his bearings, he scrambled up from the ground and took off in a run.

And then, Ada knew exactly what she should do.

As the boy sprinted across the Glade, she could hear Zart's distant shout of "We got a Runner!" behind her, as she made off towards the kitchens. She was sure that the Greenie would be distracted for long enough by the bizarreness of the Glade and the other boys to not realise his hunger, and give her enough time to whip him up a sandwich.

When Ada returned from the kitchen, she figured that the Greenie would then be wandering around with Alby and Newt, in a shortened tour. But, when she emerged, she found that the boy had been chucked in the Slammer.

Clutching the sandwich, she jogged after her leader in protest of this, "You didn't need to lock him up! He's probably terrified in there Alby!"

The boy didn't even look back to respond, waving his hand dismissively as he said, "You can go give him the sandwich if you want."

Turning on her heel, Ada decided then that it was her duty to make the boy feel welcome. He had a rough start, and the girl knew that the best thing to go from there would be to eat some food.

She appeared at the front of the Slammer, making the boy tense up as he straightened up from where he was sat at the bars. She flashed him a bright smile, settling down on the grass in front of him, and extending the sandwich towards him.

"Hungry?"

His eyes lit up, nodding hungrily, as he eyed up the sandwich in her hand. She gestured to it, and he took it without a second's notice, beginning to scoff it down like a wolf. She was immune to the bad manners (she lived with a large group of men, lack of manners came with them) and instead glanced out at the people working away in the gardens as he ate.

"What is this-"

Ada knew that Alby was the one to answer everyone's questions, so held her hand up to signal him to stop talking. To her surprise, he listened.

"Don't ask me. Just eat. You need to relax."

The boy shot her a glare due to the fact she wouldn't answer anything, but continued to eat his food as she demanded him to. Once he finished, he stared at her expectantly, hoping that it would make her cave and answer all of his nagging questions.

She felt bad for telling him nothing. She knew what it was like to be in his position - not in the Slammer, but to be clueless - and she wished that she could give him some information. But knowing herself well, she'd tell him something she wasn't supposed to and then end up getting in trouble with Alby.

"What's your name?" The boy finally croaked out, eyeing her warily.

"Ada." She replied in an instantly, gathering that he hadn't yet remembered his. "Don't worry - yours will come back soon."

She hoped that this small piece of information, which was also oddly comforting, would be enough to satisfy the boy's needs for answers until Alby arrived. Ada had no idea what was taking the leader so long when she never usually saw him working around the Glade.

"Anything else?"

It seemed the boy was more curious than expected. Exhaling heavily, Ada just shook her head and made a point of avoiding his view, as if to say that she wouldn't obey his wishes anymore.

"Oh come on, I'm trapped in here-"

"Hey Greenie." A familiar face leant down besides the bar of the Slammer, watching the Greenie with a hidden veil of amusement on his face.

Ada knew that since she had now done her friendly duty of giving the boy a snack, her work there was done. Heaving herself up from the grass, she shot a wink to Thomas and patted Alby awkwardly on the arm.

As she wandered back towards a suspicious looking Gally, Ada glanced over her shoulder to see Alby and the Greenie now moving to approach Newt. She smiled at the scene, sidling up to Gally and bumping his arm with her own.

"So," She stated, watching him expectantly.

His eyes were still trained on the Greenie, narrowed in suspicion, and with his arms folded over his chest. Up until then, she thought she could read Gally pretty well, but she had no idea why he was acting like this.

"I don't trust him." He finally said, glancing quickly to her, to see her eyebrows had shot up in mock surprise.

"Really?" She teased, gasping dramatically. Then she turned serious, because the explanation of it was what she was missing. "Why?"

He exhaled tiredly then, shrugging exaggeratedly and returning his focus to her. "I don't know, I gotta bad feeling about him."

She tilted her head as she looked over at the dark haired boy. She thought he seemed innocent enough, and more terrified than anything.

"I think he seems sweet. And harmless - shuck, it didn't look like he could hurt a fly!"

A flash of jealous passed over Gally's face then, too quick for her to notice, as she looked at him obliviously. Slinging his arm over her shoulder and ruffling her hair playfully, Gally walked them over in the direction of where the Builders were gathered.

"I promise not to say 'I told you so' when he starts wrecking havoc."

Rolling her eyes, she waved him back off to his job and turned back around to go to the Homestead. Her plans were briefly put on pause at a peculiar sight.

Throughout her time in the Glade so far, she had observed a number of weird and unpredictable things. But this was by far the weirdest, even though it doesn't sound that dramatic.

Minho was returning from the Maze, alongside fellow Runner Ben. Everyone in the Glade was aware that Minho greeted Newt as soon as he got back into the Glade. Today, Newt was watching Minho carefully, but the boy in return ignored him.

Instantly, Ada knew something was up.

Newt's gaze turned to the ground as Minho blanked him, breezing past him as though he didn't exist. His expression was filled with guilt and upset, and Ada knew then that she had to figure out what was up with the usually-lovesick pair.
