VALENTINA ADJUSTED HER baby pink heels, her delicate fingers brushing against the soft material. the subtle shimmer of her pink satin sheets caught the glow of the warm light in her room, adding a dreamy ambience to the scene. as she stood up from her bed, the smooth fabric of her short white skirt settled neatly around her hips.

her reflection stared back from her full-length mirror, a picture of elegance and precision. she tilted her head slightly, inspecting every curve, every detail of her appearance. her blush painted cheeks held the soft remnants of a smile, her satisfaction glowing in the quiet confidence she exuded. content with the sight looking back at her, valentina ran a quick hand through her hair before turning towards the door, her bag hanging around her shoulder.

her heels clicked softly against the polished floor as she made her way to the front door. just as her fingers reached for the handle, a booming voice echoed through the room, freezing her in place.

"where do you think you're going?" the suddenness startled her, her hand recoiled from the doorknob as her breath caught in her throat. she spun around, her wide eyes darting towards the source of the voice. her carefully composed demeanor faltered, replaced by a flicked of unease.

"i promised sarah i'd help her clean up after the storm."

her father emerged from the kitchen, his broad shoulders framed by the doorway as he folded his arms over his chest, his eyes darting between her hand on the doorknob and her face.

"hm," he paused for a moment. "say hello to ward from me, will you?" her father's tone carried a familiar edge of frustration, the weight of it settling heavily in the air between them. it was the same exasperation that seemed to surface in every conversation they had, no matter how mundane.

she nodded, her shoulders unconsciously drawing inward as though to shield herself from the invisible force of his stern gaze. she felt small under his scrutiny, but she forced out a fake smile.

"i will." she responded. stepping towards him, she rose slightly on her toes and gave him a gentle kiss on his cheek, before making her way back towards the front door, rolling her eyes when her back faced him.

as valentina stepped out of her car and approached the cameron's house, she heard faint screams coming from the backyard. her eyebrows knitted together in confusion as her heels tapped quicker steps against the driveway.

her initial worry melted away as her eyes landed on the chaotic scene unfolding in front of her. sarah was darting across the grass, hair flying wildly behind her, clutching what appeared to be a tennis racket. she let out a determined yell, waving the racket like a warrior wielding a sword, as a small flock of startled birds fluttered out of her reach. valentina stood frozen for a moment, taking in the absurdity of it all, before a soft giggle escaped her lips.

sarah whipped her head around at the sound, her flushed face breaking into a sheepish grin. "val!" she called out, breathless and unapologetic. "come help me, i'm saving the mice- no!" she cut herself off when a bird flew straight towards the ground again.

valentina shook her head, her laughter bubbling up again as she stepped closer, crossing her arms playfully. "and you thought this was the solution?" she teased, nodding toward the racket.

sarah shrugged dramatically, twirling the racket in her hand like a seasoned pro. "yes, actually. it's working." she quipped.

"sarah!" ward cameron's voice echoed through the backyard, and valentina turned around is confusion when she saw lana grubbs standing next to the man with a desperate look on her face.

"i'm busy!" sarah shouted, her voice cutting through the warm air as she waved the tennis racket wildly in the air. she hopped from side to side like an athlete mid-match, her movements exaggerated and erratic, making it impossible for valentina to keep a straight face when ward yelled back.

"what are you doing?"

"the burrows filled with water from the surge," breathless, sarah ran even further away from her father. "the birds are having a field day!"

"the birds have to eat too, sarah!"

"no- its a mouse genocide out here." valentina's eyes widened at her best friends movements. "no!"

"baby, i think you're scaring off more than just the birds." valentina took sarah's attention off the birds, and her eyes widened apologetically when she noticed her father approaching them with lana on his side.

"i'm sarah, im so sorry." she shook lana's hand, still trying to catch her breath. valentina just smiled at the woman while ward gave her a quick side hug.

"this is lana, scooters wife." he explained. "you were storm prepping with him, right?"

"yeah, he helped me latch the cabin on the druthers."

valentina's smile faded as her gaze shifted to the side, catching sight of lana standing near the edge of the yard. something about her posture immediately caught her attention—rigid shoulders, arms crossed tightly, and a troubled expression clouding her usually composed features.

lana eyes were fixed intently on a pair conversing, seeming to take in everything sarah mentioned about her missing husband.

"did he go out after that?" ward asked, sending lana a sympathetic look.

"no! are you crazy? there was a hurricane." sarah scoffed in disbelief, and lana leaned a little closer, her voice wavering a bit.

"well, did he say where he was going? get a phone call, or mention anything?"

the two teens glanced at each other in both confusion and fear, both assuming the worst.

"he didn't say anything to me." she answered, looking back between the distraught woman and her father. "i'm so sorry. is he okay?"

"he's absolutely okay." her father smiled at the same time lana's small voice said 'i hope so.' "he's hunkered down somewhere."

"sorry." sarah muttered as the two made their way back to the house, and she turned to her best friend with a baffled look.

"the fuck?" valentina's nose scrunched up, and she lowered her voice. "scooter's missing?"

"i think so," sarah sighed, before her eyes glanced over valentina's figure with a smile. "girl, who are you trying to impress? you look sexy."

she felt a warmth creep up her cheeks at the unexpected compliment, her usual confidence momentarily giving way to a bashful smile. she glanced down for a fleeting second, shy under sarah's playful gaze. regaining her composure with practiced ease, valentina lifted her chin, her lips curling into a teasing grin as she batted her eyelashes dramatically at sarah.

"all for you, baby." she winked, touching sarah's waist in a seductive manner before the two burst out in a fit of giggles. "you look hot as fuck too-  literally everyday."

the two girls strolled back inside, sarah's tennis racket abandoned on the porch as she ran a hand through her windswept hair. "by the way," she said casually, glancing over her shoulder at valentina, "topper's coming over in a bit."

valentina froze mid-step on the stairs, her expression shifting to one of exaggerated dread. "you're kidding? why?" she groaned, rolling her eyes so hard it was a wonder they didn't stick.

sarah smirked, clearly enjoying her best friend's reaction. "don't be so dramatic. he's not that bad."

"not that bad?" valentina shot back, tossing her bag onto sarah's desk before flopping face-first onto the bed with an exaggerated sigh. "he's the human equivalent of nails on a chalkboard, he makes me visibly ill."

sarah laughed, perching on the edge of the bed. "whatever." she dragged out. "he said something about a kegger?"

valentina's ears perked up, turning around so she could lift her body weight onto her elbows. her eyes gleamed with interest as she glanced toward the blonde, a playful smirk tugging at the corner of her lips.

"you wanna go?"

"only if you're going."

valentina sat up in excitement, casting a quick glance at the time on her phone, before exhaling sharply. "i haven't gotten drunk in fucking ages."

sarah pressed her lips together with a scoff, rolling her eyes in a teasing, exaggerating fashion.

"you got drunk last week, bimbo."

"yeah?" valentina furrowed her eyebrows, sitting up straight. "a week too long without alcohol."

sarah just laughed, shaking her head as she walked over to her closet, pulling the door open with a casual flick. she sifted through the countless items hanging inside, running her fingers over fabric. valentina managed to grab one of sarah's fashion magazines, flipping it open with a curious glance.

"you think this looks cute?" sarah asked, holding up a dress, and valentina contemplated her answer for a moment before she shook her head.

"i mean it's cute, but too formal."

"true." sarah turned back around while valentina continued scanning the pages filled with different clothes.

"you should totally wear the blue one with the flowers." she suddenly declared, not looking up from her magazine, and sarah pointed a finger at her in sudden realization.

"true, it's perfect." sarah giggled, reaching for the dress in her closet, but before she could pull it out, a knock at the door interrupted her. both girls froze, and valentina let out an exasperated sigh as topper stepped into the room.

"hi, your dad let me-"

"no." valentina shook her head and held her hand up. "we don't give a fuck."

"hi baby." sarah giggled, running towards her boyfriend in excitement as she threw her arms around him and planted a kiss on his lips, her face lighting up with joy. valentina, watching from the sidelines, couldn't help but gag at the disgusting display. "i missed you."

"i'm going to the bathroom." the brown haired girl muttered in a monotone voice, before pushing past the affectionate couple.

she pushed open the bathroom door with a huff, her mood shifting instantly at the sight of him. she couldn't quite place it, but something about topper always seemed to rub her the wrong way. it wasn't like this with any of sarah's other boyfriends- then again, sarah had never kept anyone around long enough for valentina to actually get pissed off by them.

she unlocked her phone and began scrolling through her messages, pausing when she saw a missed text from pope. a small smile tugged at her lips, and she wrote back a reply.

she quickly reapplied her lip liner, then hesitated for a moment before heading back to sarah's room, a sense of dread settling in as she wondered what might happen if she stayed in the bathroom any longer.

ew.

when she opened the door sarah had already changed into the blue dress, and valentina smiled at the sight.

"it's perfect, you look like an angel." her words made sarah laugh softly, and gave her best friend a spin.

"thank you." sarah paused for a moment, before lifting her finger in the air with a grin. "be right back!" was all she said, before exiting her room, leaving it in complete silence for a few seconds.

"so, how-"

"oh my god, shut the fuck up." valentina shot him a warning look. "what are you doing?"

"talking...?"

"well, stop that. you can talk to me when you actually start respecting people."

topper looked at her in confusion, completely oblivious to the fact that she was referring to the pogues- mainly pope.

"what do you mean?"

"what do you think, jackass?" she snapped, and topper shut his mouth in realization.

the two fell into silence, one that valentina didn't mind it at all. but the calm didn't last long.

"can i please talk?" he asked, and valentina rolled her eyes before turning towards the boy with a bitter smile.

"what."

"are you like," he paused for a moment, pursing his lips. "do you like rafe?"

"the fuck?" valentina's nose scrunched up in disbelief, and she almost laughed. "are we in middle school? why are you asking me this?"

"i don't know, just wondering." topper shrugged, glancing around the room.

"no i don't, topper."

"okay." he was quiet for a moment, before speaking up again. "it's just that i think you'd look good together, you know?"

"okay? i don't really care."

she was tired of hearing about rafe, honestly. all anyone ever told her when it came down to relationships was how perfect she'd be with him- and valentina knew the real reason behind it. it was because they both had money, and they were both conveniently attractive, and to her it was all bullshit.

another silence fulfilled the room, and this time topper did not dare to break it until sarah came back with a tray of food in her hands and a big smile plastered on her face.

"we never drink with an empty stomach!"
