GeNie debuted on March 3rd, 2011 with the single ❛Genie ❜ which received positive critical acclaim which shocked many considering the fact they debuted under lesser known company Big Hit as their first ever group. The single charted on KBS' Music Bank for 7 consecutive weeks making it the second longest-running number one song on Music Bank after SNSD's ❛Gee ❜.
GeNiE had their second comeback in March 2013, 1 year after their hiatus due to the car accident member Yeoreum was involved in. The trio made their comeback after their hiatus with their first studio album 10 Minutes and title track of the same name.
❛10 minutes ❜ became a huge hit in Korea being the longest charting song on Music Bank in 2013 and gained the girls 16 music show wins and made them the artists with the most music show wins in 2013. The album also sold over 80,000 copies making it a commercial success. Additionally, GeNiE won song of the year with ❛10 minutes ❜ at all major year end award shows in Korea.
The group received success in Japan with their Japanese debut single ❛#Cookie Jar ❜ which landed at number 4 on the Oricon Singles Chart and became certified Gold by RIAJ. It also sold 95,054 copies within the first month of its release establishing the group's popularity in Japan.
Finally, the group achieved international success with their 2014 English debut single ❛Genie In A Bottle ❜ which charted on the Bubbling Under Hot 100 Singles at number 1 for 3 weeks before debuting unto the Billboard Hot 100 at number 20 making them the 3rd Asian Act to chart on the Billboard Hot 100 after Wonder Girls and PSY. The single went from number 20 to number 10 and stayed on the chart for a whopping 26 weeks. It earned the girls 20 music show wins and Song Of The Year & Artist Of The Year at MAMA and MMA.
The name GeNie was proposed by Yeoreum as Bang Sihyuk already had the concept of three different nationalities, visuals and talents.
As a genie grants three wishes, the groups name means that the three wishes are the girls and they will return the favour by granting wishes for fans with their music.
2006-2010 : Debut Preparations
The preparations for Big Hit's first ever girl group started when Yeoreum joined the company in 2007 after auditioning in 2006 and being accepted.
Bang Sihyuk decided that he wanted to make 2 girl groups, one with a girly concept like SNSD and one with a hip hop concept.
He put Yeoreum in the one with a girly concept although she wanted to be in the other.
Then Tala joined in 2009 and was the first other trainee in the whole company that Yeoreum trained with.
Finally the group was completed with Emi also joining in 2009 after leaving SM Entertainment.
2011: Debut, First Comeback, Commercial Success

After many teasers, GeNiE finally debuted on the 3rd of March, 2011 with the single, ❛Genie ❜ which shot them into popularity in Korea as it became the number one song on various music shows for weeks and gave them 6 music show wins. This song was extremely popular considering the fact Big Hit was not a Big 3 company and gave the girls a good headstart into their career.
On the 7th of September, the group had their first comeback with their first EP Tell Me and title track of the same name. The EP racked up 56,000 sales, a very high number considering the year and the group and the title track ❛Tell Me❜ became extremely popular giving the group even more fame in Korea. It charted for about a month at number one on all music shoes and gained 7 music show wins.
The girls won Best New Female Artist at the Mnet Asian Music Awards and Best New Artist & Netizen Popularity award at Melon Music Awards cementing their popularity.

In the statement, Big Hit expressed that she would require surgery and proper healing time and as a result, the group would be going on an indefinite hiatus.
This news rattled the industry and fans of GeNie who didn't know how to react and only wondered if the group was ever going to make a comeback.
Fortunately, in October of 2012, Big Hit made a statement telling fans that Yeoreum had healed fully and was ready to continue her activities and announced GeNiE's first concert THREE WISHES which would hold on the 3rd of November.
Surprisingly, the number of fans who came fell short of the number expected and almost half the venue was empty which showed the decline in popularity and interest of the group as a result of their hiatus.
