~ Chapter Twenty Nine ~
"Vanya? What happened to you?" Dusk asked as she stumbled towards her sister. Vanya's eyes suddenly went back to normal as she stared at the raven. "Dusk, did you know?" She asked. "No, Vanya. I didn't know!" "How am I supposed to believe that?" Vanya's voice remained emotionless as the shaking continued around them. "I've never lied to you. What Father did was very messed up. And I can imagine your anger. But please, you know me. I'm not like everyone else,"
The shakiness around them stopped as Vanya continued to look at her sister, pondering what to do with her. "You're coming with me," she said, grabbing her hand as the shakiness continued behind them, tearing the basement to shreds as they reached the elevator shaft. Dusk breathed shakily as they reached the top, unaware of the chaos above them.
"Yo, what the hell is going on?" Diego shouted as the walls began to crack. "Are those explosions coming f-" "We need to get to safety outside the Academy," Pogo interrupted Klaus. The siblings immediately started running all over the place, trying to get out while searching for Grace and Dusk. But little did the siblings know that she was with Vanya, watching in horror as the house they grew up in was slowly being destroyed. The elevator came to a stop, and the two sisters walked out and down the hall, continuing to destroy everything behind them.
Vanya stopped at each of her sibling's bedrooms, remembering the painful memories of when they paid no attention to her. Dusk didn't want this to happen. All she wanted to do was to free her from that metal cage and hold her in her arms, telling her everything would be okay. She had never seen this side of her sister before, and it was scary.
Meanwhile, Klaus and Diego had run upstairs, calling out to Grace, but she never called back. Large rubble came crashing down from the ceiling, hitting Klaus in the head and knocking Diego unconscious. Klaus groaned as he tried to wake him as more rubble and wood came crashing down. At the very last second, someone had pulled the two out of the way. Klaus had looked up to see it was Ben. Klaus was in shock but didn't have time to ask questions. They still needed to get out of there.
Vanya and Dusk reached the living room, and Number Seven had come to another stop in front of the fireplace. Another painful memory flushed through her, and more destruction was caused. Dusk looked away, and out of the corner of her eye, she saw Pogo emerge from his hiding place. And that gave her hope that he could calm her down. "Miss Vanya. That's quite enough!" He shouted.
Vanya turned around, seeing him standing near the bar, determined to end her tantrum. Her eyes turned back to normal as she slowly walked towards him, with Dusk trailing close behind. " I understand how upset you are. But I can assure you that none of your siblings bear any responsibility for what happened to you as a child," Pogo reasoned. "Did you know?" She questioned. Pogo continued, telling her that she was capable of great things just like her siblings but that Reginald was only trying to protect her from herself. "Did... you know?"
Dusk looked up at the balcony to see Luther and Allison making their great escape. She held back a sigh of relief as she watched them run down the steps and out of The Academy unscathed. Now, she could only hope that the rest of her siblings got out safely. "Yes, Miss Vanya. I knew," Pogo answered. Vanya nodded, slightly bowing her head before lifting it again to reveal her eyes turned back to white.
Suddenly, the chimpanzee started floating up in the air, and with one swift movement, she flung him across the room, instantly impaling him with the mounted antler horns atop the fireplace. Dusk clasped a hand over her mouth, watching as he groaned in pain before slowly dying. "No," she barely whispered, blinking back tears. The Academy came crashing down behind them as the two sisters walked out of their former home and down the darkened street.
"Where are we going?" Dusk asked, not being able to stop herself from looking at the pile of rubble behind them. "My concert's tonight. I want you to be there," Vanya answered bluntly. "Okay, but Vanya?" She turned around, staring at her sister with normal brown eyes, looking slightly agitated. The raven explained she didn't have an outfit for the concert and asked if she could go to her apartment and find one.
"Alright, fine. But meet me at my place before I have to leave," Vanya sighed before walking away. As much as Dusk wanted to go to the Academy and find out if everyone was okay, she didn't want to risk Vanya finding out and hurting her too. So, she ran as she made her way to her apartment, trying not to look back.
~~~~~~~~
"Mom! Klaus, come here. Help me search!" Diego shouted as he searched the rubble. During the destruction of the Academy, Klaus and Diego saw Grace looking out one of the windows, smiling and waving at them as the building came down on top of her. Deep down, Klaus knew that she was gone. "She's gone, okay? Just stop," Klaus sighed, grabbing his brother's hand and meeting his eyes. "What do you want to do? You w-want to walk away from this?" Diego stuttered in disbelief.
"No," Klaus shook his head. "W-what about Pogo?" Diego questioned. "He didn't make it. Vanya killed him," Luther answered, stepping over some of the debris. The rest of the Hargreeves siblings were in shock. They never thought that Vanya could snap or even kill their caretakers. Amidst all the chaos, Klaus held high hopes that Dusk had managed to escape. "Did anyone find Dusk?" He asked. "She's with Vanya. I saw them together just before we got out," Luther answered.
So many thoughts began running around in Klaus' head. Did she team up with Vanya? Did Vanya take her hostage? What's going on? "Guys! This is it. The apocalypse is still on. The world ends today," Five called out to his siblings, clutching a newspaper. "I thought you said it was over," Luther asked, confused as he stumbled towards his brother. "I was wrong, okay? This newspaper! I found it in the future the day I got stuck. The headline hasn't changed," Five pointed out.
"No, that doesn't mean anything. The time could've been altered since that newspaper came out this morning," Diego shook his head in denial. Five was so close to snapping, but he held back the urge. "You're not listening to me. When I found it, I assumed this place came down along with everything else. But here we are. The Moon's still shining, and the Earth is in one piece, but not the Academy," Klaus walked towards him, snatching the newspaper out of his hand as he flipped through the pages, saying he was confused.
"Listen to me, you idiot! Vanya destroys the Academy before the apocalypse. I thought Harold Jenkins was the cause, but he was the fuse. Vanya is the bomb. Vanya causes the apocalypse," Five elaborated. The sounds of helicopters swirled above them as the bright lights shone down on the rubble. "She's taken Dusk. We have to find them!" Luther gaped. Cop cars had surrounded the collapsed property, and the siblings took off in separate directions as Luther told them to regroup at The Super Star Bowling Alley.
Dusk continued running, bumping into a few people as she ran towards her apartment. When she reached the front door, she nearly collapsed, gasping for fresh air as her heart raced a thousand miles an hour. The flashbacks from the destruction of the Academy replayed in her head, and she let out a sob as the image of Pogo being impaled hit her heart. She took a deep breath, trying to compose herself before walking inside.
The moment she shut the door behind her, someone cleared their throat, turning on the nearby lamp. It was none other than her ex-fiancé, Sebastian. Dusk saw the smug look on his face as he sat on the couch, his eyes slowly scanning her body. "What are you doing here?" She growled. He said nothing but reached into his pocket, pulling out a key. "You left the spare under the mat. I was starting to wonder when you were coming home,"
The raven ground her teeth as she continued staring at the man who slept with another girl in their bed. "I told you to get out and never come back here again. Now get the fuck out of my apartment," She snarled, her eyes turning red. Sebastian stood up from the couch and walked towards her. "You can't get rid of me, Dusky. You'll never find another man as good as me,"
"I'm warning you, get out or I'll-" "You'll what? Burn me? You wouldn't dare. You love me too much to do that," He grabbed her wrist, and Dusk kicked him in his crotch, making him howl in pain and let go of her. "GET OUT!" She shouted, the flames in her eyes growing bigger and bigger.
"Never."
A split second after he said that, Dusk opened her mouth, releasing her inner demon and burning her ex. His screams grew louder and louder as the flames touched his skin, and he begged for it to stop. But Dusk showed no mercy and continued to burn him until all that remained was a charred skeleton. And when the flames cleared, Dusk had not returned to her normal self. But instead, she was someone else.
She was The Phoenix.
