~ Chapter Sixty Six ~
Where's my mother?! Dusk repeatedly asked herself as her eyes darted across every mother's photo just to make sure she wasn't going crazy. Her hands trembled uncontrollably as she set the book down, feeling like her heart was going to burst. The shock was becoming too much for her, and she felt like she was going to die. Dusk calm down, breathe! a tiny voice in her head shouted.
Suddenly, she felt something wrap around her and she quickly tried to fight whatever it was off, but as she slowly came back to reality, she was relieved to see Klaus was there. It wasn't a voice in her head that was talking to her, it was him. "Come on, sweetheart. Breathe with me! In... and out..." he guided her, feeling her shaky breaths that eventually turned into calmer ones. "That's it, just keep going... I'm right here,"
Dusk turned her head to look at him, seeing his beautiful and charming smile that always made her feel better. "Now, what's going on in that pretty little head of yours?" he asked. "I-It's our moms..." she barely whispered. "What about them?" The raven pried herself from her boyfriend's grip and showed him the book. "There's six moms in here and seven of us. My mom is missing,"
Klaus's mouth formed into an o shape, not because of the discovery, but because he realized he might have to be the one to tell Dusk the reason behind that. But he felt it wasn't his place to do so, Five should be the one to tell her. "Hey, it's gonna be okay," He rubbed her shoulder. "No, it won't be okay! Even though she's dead, I still have a right to know about her life. This book could finally give me closure..."
Seeing her this upset broke his heart and the urge to tell her was becoming even more intense. But he continued to fight it off. Unexpectedly, she muffled her head into his chest, staining his yellow shirt with her tears and running mascara. "We'll figure it out, moonlit rose. We always do," he pressed a tender kiss to the crown of her head, Part of Dusk felt like this was weird, as she normally didn't cry in front of other people, thinking it would show her vulnerabilities. But with Klaus, she felt safe to do so. He was her safehaven and she was his.
Feeling like a wrung-out dishrag, she glanced up at him, feeling his hand travel to her right cheek, stroking it for a moment before resting there. "Come with me," He whispered, offering his other hand to her. She glanced down at it, a little curious to know what he had in mind. She slipped her hand in his, and they walked towards the elevator, pressing the floor of their rooms before they glided up.
She lovingly squeezed his hand, feeling an immediate squeeze-back. Once the elevator came to a stop and opened its doors, Klaus started running down the hall desperate to get back to the room, still gripping onto his girlfriend's hand. "Slow down, Klausy!" She giggled. The junkie reached into his pocket, hoping to find the room key, but to his shock, it wasn't there. "Damn it, I think Diego has the key. No matter, this buddy can help!" He muttered, grabbing a bobby pin and pressing it into the keyhole.
Dusk watched with curiosity at how fast he was going, it almost seemed like he had done this before. Looking back on it, she figured he'd done it over a dozen times, given the fact he liked to steal Reginald's valuables. "And... voilà, my lady!" he pushed the door open, his fake posh accent making her cheeks blush.
"Now, who's up for some muffins and strawberries?" Klaus walked over to the closet and pulled out a small Styrofoam box and opened it for the raven to see. Six mini muffins were snugly pressed together, containing blueberry, poppy seed, and chocolate chip. And sure enough, the delectable red fruit was also there, along with a small side of chocolate syrup. "When did you get all this?" she asked.
"Oh, right before me and Five left. You said back in '63, you wanted to go on a date. And since things are shitty right now, I thought this would be a good way to cheer us up," Klaus answered, before digging through the closet for something else. Dusk sat on the floor, slipping off her heels as they were beginning to make her feet ache. "Aha! There's that fiendish rascal!" Klaus turned around holding up a big green bottle with gold foil.
No way he managed to steal that and not get caught! Klaus struggled to rip the gold foil and pull off the cork, even trying to get it open with his teeth. "Here, let me get it," She offered, but Klaus insisted that he'd open it. Dusk tried to grab the bottle from him, but just as they shook it a little rough the cork flew off, bouncing over to the bunks before flying out the open window, hitting a nearby citizen on the sidewalk. "YEOUCH!"
"Shit..." They both said at the same time, glancing at each other with wide eyes. "Well, we got it open now," Klaus awkwardly smiled. Dusk slowly walked over to the window, swiftly closing it before joining her boyfriend on the floor. The two met each other's eyes while they reached into the food box and grabbed their muffins. She took a bite of her poppy seed, remembering the nostalgic memories from when Grace would make muffins for the Umbrellas on Saturday mornings. They would always be so perfectly moist and no matter what type of muffin you got, there would always be enough flavor that would blow your taste buds.
"I know I said it earlier, but you look incredible," Klaus breathed out, staring at her dress. "If you don't mind me asking, what business did you have to deal with earlier?" Dusk chuckled at the memory, almost inhaling a piece of her muffin. "Okay, your gonna laugh when I tell you this," she swallowed. "Ooo, spill the tea!" He gestured. Dusk explained every little moment of her revenge, and as she described the people's reaction to the infidelity scandal, Klaus wished he had been there to see it. Normally, he was all about peace and love, but the thought of his moonlit rose exposing her cheater made him wish he was there to witness her fire roar brightly.
"What happened to the girl?" He questioned. "She ran off crying. But you know what they say, whatever happens in the dark, always comes to light," Dusk smiled, gulping from the bottle of champagne. By this point, their food had run out and they took turns guzzling the alcoholic sparkle. "You know, I'd say this was a pretty good date," the raven tucked a strand of her hair behind her ear.
"It was. But between you and me, I don't want it to end just yet," He scooted closer to her, gently pressing his head against her left temple. Dusk looked over her shoulder, feeling his lips gently brush against her nose. "Did I ever tell you how much you mean to me?" he whispered. "Is this you or the alcohol talking?" She inquired. The junkie held back a chuckle before reconnecting his gaze with her. "Maybe a bit of both?"
Dusk kissed his forehead before glancing at his pinkish lips. Slowly inching towards him, their lips collided and in an instant, their souls caught on fire, burning with a bright light. But this wasn't just any fire, it was burning love, a burning desire for one another. This was only something they had imagined when growing up together. All those nights where they shared their wildest dreams felt like they were all coming true at the same time.
Klaus wrapped a hand around the back of her neck, and Dusk softly cupped his face, pulling away for a moment at a time to catch some air. She really loved him, and even if something bigger was to come their way, in the end, their hard work and love would prevail. As their makeout continued, the hotel room door opened, and Luther and Diego walked in.
"Augh, really guys? Do you have to exchange spit in here?" Diego sighed. Annoyed by the interruption, Klaus and Dusk pulled away, shooting them dirty looks. "Get out!" Dusk growled. "How about you get out? Your room is that way!" Diego pointed out the door. The raven reluctantly stood up and straightened out her dress, but Klaus grabbed her hand. "Come on, hun. Don't let them ruin this,"
"No, it's fine. I should be heading back anyway," Dusk exhaled, sharply elbowing Diego's side before loudly slamming the door behind her.
