~ Chapter Forty Four ~
Around seven o clock, Dusk was getting ready to head to this "Light Supper" her father had spoken of in his letter. As she brushed her hair in the bathroom mirror, she couldn't help but feel nervous when it came to seeing her father again. Sure, this was a different timeline, and he hadn't taken his own life then, but it still scared her.
The last time she saw him was when she was nineteen years old. She was through with all his bullshit, and after a heated argument, she carefully and quietly started packing up her stuff before sneaking out of the academy through the fire escape and making a new life for herself. She could no longer deal with the flashbacks from those missions and couldn't stop thinking about a life outside the academy. A life away from all the pressure.
"Alright, you should probably start heading out now. Don't want you to be late," Mary said, handing Dusk a lightweight coat for the unusually chilly night. "Thank you. I'll be back in a little bit. Just take care of yourself and James, okay?" she said before walking out. She pulled out the envelope with the address printed at the bottom, hoping the rest of her siblings would be there.
A bit later, she pulled into a parking spot, getting out to see the neon signs of the Southland Life building. To Dusk, this building looked more like a business rather than a reasonable meetup spot. Part of her became tenser as she walked up the stairs towards the elevator, worried that this dinner was a façade and the actuality of that letter was something entirely different.
She pressed the singular button on the panel, slightly tapping her foot as she waited for the elevator door to open. A moment later, it did, and she stepped inside. As it was about to close, a hand got in the way, and the doors opened again to reveal it was Five. He gave her a smile before standing about a half-foot away from the small metal panel of buttons. "Wait up," A voice said, making the two look up. Diego also got into the elevator, Allison, Klaus, Vanya, and then finally, Luther.
"Good, we're all here," Five said, satisifed as the elevator doors closed for certain this time, and they started moving. The tiny box was full of silence, only broken by the quiet sounds of slow breathing. Unexpectedly, a weird smell entered the elevator, making everyone scrunch their faces in disgust and cover their noses. "Luther, that smells amazing!" Klaus chuckled, making everybody burst into small fits of laughter while still trying to block out the smell.
"Sorry, I'm just nervous," Luther stated as the elevator stopped. The doors opened, and The Hargreeves Seven walked out, heading towards a large round table with different varieties of fruit in the center. Soft island music played from the speakers just as they reached some of the chairs. "Alright, when Dad gets here, I'll do the talking, okay?" Five stated. "I've got a few questions for him myself," Diego said, making the raven roll her eyes.
He must really want to save Kennedy, aye? "Hey, we don't want to scare him off. He might be able to help us stop Doomsday and get home," Five said as he pulled back a chair and sat in it. Diego continued to protest, saying they needed to find out why he was planning to kill the president. This only made Five irritated, telling him that this was a matter of life and death.
"You know what? Maybe we should take turns talking, okay? Like whoever has this conch shell gets to talk," Vanya said, lifting the decorative shell. "She does have a point. We all have questions. Maybe Dad can give us some of the answers," Dusk attempted to reason. "Dusk, Vanya, we don't have time for a debate," Five slowly shook his head. "Maybe I should lead. We all know I'm a better public speaker than the rest of you," Allison said, taking the conch shell from Vanya's hand.
"Okay, Daddy's girl," Diego scoffed as he glared at his sister. "Oh, are you jealous, Number Two?" Allison bit back sarcastically, a smug smile at the corner of her lips. "Listen, no more numbers. Right now, we're Team Zero," Diego said. After the Kraken finished his little speech, Luther pointed out that he didn't have the conch shell, which made half of the room roll their eyes at his sucking up to their sister.
Without warning, Diego knocked the conch out of Allison's hand, smashing it into a million pieces against the wall. The doors opened, and everyone looked over to see their father walk into the room, carrying a notebook and a folder. Dusk's breath hitched in her throat, and she looked down at her lap as Reginald sat.
"Not only have you burglarized my lab, set my chimp loose, conned your way into the Mexican consulate, repeatedly stalked and attacked me, but you have on numerous occasions called me..." Before Reginald could finish his sentence, Klaus scooted in his chair, holding a small glass of alcohol. "Hey Pops, How's it hanging?" he grunted as he adjusted himself.
"...Dad. My reconnaissance tells me that you're not CIA, not KGB, certainly not MI5, so who are you?" Reginald finished, looking at all the siblings. They went silent, opening their mouths, but no words could come out. "We're your children, and we're from the future. In 1989, you adopted us all and trained us to fight against the end of the world. You called us The Umbrella Academy," Five explained. Reginald nodded, but then a look of confusion spread.
"Why on earth would I adopt seven-" "Eight. One of us is dead," Allison cut in. Even 17 years after he died, Ben's death still had a strong negative impact on all of them. "Yeah, ba-ba-ba-ba-ba-ba. Enough of that now," Klaus said, looking over his shoulder. Who in the hell is he talking to? Dusk wondered to herself. Klaus looked back at them, ushering them to continue as he sipped from his drink.
"Well, regardless... what would possess me to adopt eight ill-mannered malcontents?" Reginald questioned. "We all have special abilities. In the superpower sense," Five continued. "Call me old-fashioned, but I'm a stickler for a pesky little thing called evidence," Everyone at the table resisted the urge to sigh as people suddenly wanted to see powers. "We're not circus animals, okay? We're not going to bounce balls on our noses and clap like seals for your amusement," Luther said firmly.
Diego suddenly snapped, throwing one of his knives across the room and hit one of the wooden pillars. This little stunt made Reginald grab his pen and start writing something down in his notebook. Everyone leaned towards the table, hoping to catch what their father was writing down. "You are zero for two, young man," Reginald answered, making Diego even angrier and start to charge towards him. Luckily, Five spacial jumped in front of him, preventing Diego from going further.
"Stop!" he hissed. Reginald was slightly surprised seeing Five's abilities, but not by much. "Quick rundown. Luther: Super Strength, Klaus can communicate with the dead, Allison can rumor anyone to do anything," Five explained as he sat back in his chair. "Except she never uses it," Diego muttered. Dusk watched with small glee as her sister rumored him to punch himself in the face, and she couldn't help but crack a smile.
"What about you two?" Reginald asked, looking at Dusk and Vanya. "I don't think we should take Vanya and Dusky out for a spin," Luther said, patting the raven's shoulder. This comment made the glee in Dusk fade as she glared at Luther with harshness, her eyes turning blood red. "You know, that's not a good idea for either of them," Klaus pointed out, seeing the anger in Dusk's eyes. "I can handle it!" Dusk snapped, removing Luther's hand from her shoulder.
The corners of her eyes had ignited into flames, something that hadn't happened since she arrived in Dallas. Reginald looked at the raven with a bit of interest. "Okay, that's all with Dusky. Any further, and she'll cause chaos," Luther interjected. Dusk tried her best to swallow her anger, her eyes turning back to blue as Vanya was about to take her turn against her family's protest.
She focused her energy on the Tiki cup as she clinked it and sent the soundwaves to the fruit in the middle, exploding all over the family. Pineapple chunks got into Dusk's hair, and the more she tried to get them out, the more they dug into her dark locks. "Oops," Vanya said softly. "Look, we know you're involved in a plot to assassinate the president," Diego said, standing up from his chair.
Really Diego? "You were recently hospitalized, isn't that correct?" Diego scoffed, pulling out a photo from his pocket and sliding it across the table to him. "Well, I suppose you've solved it. You've single-handedly unearthed my nefarious plot. Is that what you want to hear?" Reginald questioned. Everyone looked at Reginald as he bluntly told Diego that he was a fake hero that only did heroic things for the approval of others. Even though she didn't get along with him much, the raven began to feel bad for her brother, seeing him back down with a shocked and defeated look.
"Look, forget about the president. We have a catastrophic war coming in five days. We need to figure out how to stop it," Five explained, hoping that this part of their plan would be right as rain. "War? Men will always be at war with each other," Reginald scoffed. "No, this isn't just some war. I'm talking about a doomsday. The end of the world," Five clarified. Reginald looked down at the table before glancing at all the siblings.
"You're the special ones, aren't you? Why don't you band together and do something about it?" Reginald suggested. These words angered Dusk, so much so that the flames in her eyes grew wider. "You son of a bitch!" Dusk growled. She shot out of her chair, about to rush towards him when Luther stood up and pushed Dusk back. "Calm down, Dusk!" Luther commanded. "I'm not a fucking dog, Luther! You can't tell me what to do!" Dusk protested.
On the other side of the table, Klaus suddenly started convulsing, making half the table look over at him while the other half watched Dusk. "Klaus! Dusk! Now is not the time! What are you doing?" Five hissed. "I-I-I'm..." Klaus choked out. "Out with it, boy!" Reginald commanded. "Ben!" he gasped before coughing and losing consciousness. By this time, the anger inside Dusk had faded as she grew concerned about her crush. The flames in her eyes disintegrated, and she slumped back in her chair.
"Well, thank you for coming. I've seen quite enough," Reginald said, standing up from his chair. Luther pounded his fists on the table, getting his attention as the beast ripped off his shirt, revealing what his father had done to him all those years ago. "Look at it!" Luther shouted. Reginald then looked at Five, asking to speak with him in private before he walked off, leaving the rest of the siblings in shock, sadness, and unconsciousness.
"Check, please!" Dusk said, looking towards the Tiki bar.
