~ Chapter Forty Eight ~
Dusk bolted out of the garden after making her shocking discovery. Another image she wanted out of her head wouldn't remove itself, no matter how hard she tried. As she ran out the front door, she tripped and landed face-first into the gravel driveway. She let out a small groan, feeling her cheeks begin to burn now, not only with sadness but the pain of the impact.
She grabbed Mary's car keys from her pocket, inserting them into the ignition before taking off, continuing to hold back her tears. But eventually, she couldn't hold them back any longer, and she let out a loud, choked sob as she thought she lost Klaus forever. Small sobs continued to escape her lips, her vision becoming blurry with even more tears.
After spending about twenty minutes on the road, she pulled into a parking spot right outside Jonathan's Bar, bursting through the door and capturing the attention of some patrons. "Hey, Dusk! Whoa, are you okay?" Jack asked as the raven came into his view. She sat at the bar, wiping the corner of her eye with the tip of her finger. "Not really..." She admitted, trying to keep her composure. Even though Jack was a good friend despite the short time they knew each other, it felt awkward to cry in front of him.
"What happened?" He questioned as he made a drink for one of the other customers. She began to choke on her words, and the only sounds that came from her mouth were stutters and gasping breaths. The blonde-brown man somehow knew that whatever happened was too painful for her to talk about. "Vic! Can you come over here?" He asked, calling out to the redhead.
Swiftly, Victoria rushed over, dressed in her steampunk uniform. "Hey, Dusky! How are you doing?" She asked, her smile so genuine. Dusk said nothing, burying her head in her hands. Instantly, Victoria grew worried about her, looking at Jack, silently questioning what was wrong. To which Jack just shrugged. She sat on the stool right next to Dusk, hearing her muffled sobs, her heart beginning to ache at seeing her like that. "Dusk, what happened?" She asked, soothingly rubbing her shoulder.
Dusk slowly lifted her head, glancing in Vic's direction and meeting her gaze. It took a while for Dusk to explain the situation without breaking down again, but when she finished, she was greeted with a sympathizing hug, feeling Victoria's fingers run through her hair. "I'm so sorry," She whispered. "I don't understand what happened to us! We were so close growing up! I've loved him since, S-since..."
Victoria had a vague idea about Dusk and Klaus's relationship growing up, but she had a bit of a hunch that some kind of intimacy was involved with it. "Wait... did you guys?" She trailed off, not wanting to upset Dusk any further. "No, nothing like that. But we cuddled and kissed a few times before. Does that even mean anything to him? Or was I another one of his sidedudes or sidechicks?"

"Hey, Daddy! You got a sec?" A deep voice called out, breaking Ben and Jill out of their makeout session. His eyes widened when he saw his brother towering over him and looking straight down. "Diego!" Ben gasped. Diego motioned for him to come with him. Still confused and in a daze, Ben agreed to go with him, promising Jill that he would be right back.
"You need to come with me," Diego whispered as a few of Klaus's followers bowed their heads before walking off. "Where?" Ben questioned. "Five found a way home," Diego dragged his brother's arm along as he began to fall slightly behind. "It's so great to talk to you again, Diego," Ben smiled.
Diego looked over at him, confused and wondering what he was talking about. "Are you high? He inquired, assuming the answer was most likely yes. Right, I'm still in Klaus's body. He doesn't know I'm Ben. Let's hope he handles this well... "No, I'm not Klaus. I'm Ben," he started. Diego stopped in his tracks, his suspicions quickly escalating. "You are high. Look, I don't have time for this," Diego began to walk away, but Ben kept insisting that it was really him. No matter what he tried to say, his brother still didn't believe him.
"I can prove it. Ask me something only Ben would know," He blurted out. The second Hargreeves rolled his eyes before taking a step towards Ben. "Okay. When we were little, what did you program Allison's Teddy Ruxpin to say?" Ben looked down, trying not to chuckle at the memory. "Luther sniffs Dad's underwear," He responded singsongy.
Diego's eyes instantly widened, surprised to discover that it was actually Ben. And although he didn't see his actual figure, knowing he was there made him so happy to the point he shed some tears. "Holy shit!" Diego gaped, pulling Ben into a tight, warming hug. After a brief hug, Diego and Ben pulled apart, and Ben explained how he could possess Klaus and how awesome it was. "Okay, you can tell me more about it when we get back to 2019, okay?" Diego politely interrupted, grabbing his arm as they walked back to the mansion.
"What about Destiny's Children? We can't just leave them here. Klaus should be the one to tell them--" "Oh no, no, no, no, okay? You stay in this body. We need someone responsible behind the wheel," Diego cut in. Ben nodded understandingly but asked if he could have at the bare minimum, ten minutes to say goodbye to Jill. Diego stopped in front of him, looking down at the watch in his hand before looking back at Ben.
"Meet me in the alley behind Elliott's in 30 minutes. Don't be late," Diego instructed before he took off towards the back door and out of the mansion. A jolt ran through Klaus's body and once again, Ben was pushed out of Klaus's body. But he pushed himself back in. "Oh no," He muttered before rushing inside, Klaus continuing to try to get his brother out.
"Hey uh, Prophet! Prophet, where are you going?" Keechie called out, taking notice of him rushing towards the front door. "Uh, quick vision quest. Be back in a few years. Maybe," Ben stuttered. He turned around on his heel, trying to continue on his way, but Keechie wouldn't leave him alone. "Would you just do me one favor?" Ben rushed towards him. "Of course, Prophet. Anything!" Keechie responded. "Tell Jill that rolling in the dirt was the greatest moment of my life,"
Just as he rushed over to the hedges, Keechie called out one last time, asking if he had any parting words of wisdom. Ben hesitated, wondering what Klaus would say, considering the numerous songs he stole from other artists. "Oh my god, we're back again. Brothers, sisters, everybody sing! We're gonna bring you the flavor. We're gonna show you how!" He gave a small awkward smile before running off, this time not being stopped.
As he got closer to the alleyway, Klaus fought harder and harder to get his brother out. There were times he came close, but Ben fought back, grabbing ahold of his brother and going back in and trying to follow Diego's orders. He made the turn towards the next street, only about 50 feet away from the alleyway where Luther and Five were waiting.
"Hey! Hey! We're here!" Ben shouted, rushing towards the two and instantly confusing them. "What do you mean we?" Five questioned. But Ben didn't have the time to explain as Klaus threw up, not only expelling a ton of vomit but as well as Ben. He collapsed on the ground, groaning as his head began to pound like a drum. "I can't believe it. I mean, you're here!" Luther said with exasperation.
Five began to pace back and forth in the alley, constantly looking down at his watch, watching the minutes tick by. "We've got eight minutes left," he muttered worriedly, just as Klaus began to squint his eyes, hoarsely talking about a, "weird dream" he had. Eight minutes soon became seven, and then seven became six. By the time a minute remained, Five was at his wit's end.
"What's going on, guys? Are we going somewhere?" Klaus asked tiredly. "It was a simple task... A SIMPLE TASK! All we had to do was be here! Didn't have to fight a giant sea monster, no. An army of mutants? Nein! It was handed to us on a silver platter!" Five ranted, becoming increasingly angry. "Could you moan a little softer? My head is killing me!" Klaus said, placing his hands on his head as he carefully sat up.
"LISTEN TO ME, YOU USELESS PUKEBAG! WE JUST BLEW OUR CHANCE TO SAVE THE WORLD!" Five shouted, causing Klaus to whimper. A sudden noise came from the nearby briefcase Five had somehow obtained, and he threw it toward the sky, causing it to disappear in a flash of blue. The three siblings who had arrived before the time limit stared at the sky in defeat.
"We were that close,"
