~ Chapter Fifty Five ~
"Stop trying to muddy the waters!" Lila's voice echoed throughout the barn as Five tried to calm her down. The siblings stopped about ten feet from the doors, catching a glimpse of their brother's situation. Lila held a small blade in her left hand, taking a few steps towards him, a murderess look in her eyes. "Why are we just standing around? Let's get in there!" Dusk hissed quietly.
"We should split up. Dusk, Klaus, and Vanya, you take the left-hand barn door. The rest of us we'll take the right. We don't want to give her the chance to run," Luther instructed. The raven fought the urge to roll her eyes but followed his instructions. As quiet as mice, they crept through the snow to the other barn door, waiting for the perfect moment to intervene. Dusk looked out of one of the bullet holes, listening to Five talk about how it wasn't personal when it came to the assassination of Lila's parents.
"I never realized what she was up to at the time, but... now it all makes sense. She never cared about your parents. She was looking for you," he said, referring to The Handler. Lila stood still, her eyes widening the longer it sunk in. "Why?" She whispered. Soon, Dusk saw Diego signaling to her to get inside the barn. And on the silent count of three, the siblings walked in, catching her off-guard.
"Because you're one of us," Diego answered, making her turn to her right. "The Handler stole you. Just like our asshole father took all of us," Lila shook her head furiously in an attempt to block out the words. Diego stepped closer to her, freaking her out and making her scream, "STAY BACK!" he did his best to keep her calm, trying to convince her that The Handler wasn't the person she thought she was.
"You think she's gonna listen to him?" Dusk whispered to her boyfriend. "I hope so, but at this point, who knows?" He responded, a hand wrapping around Dusk's waist. "I know what it's like to love dangerous people, Lila. The difference is..." Diego looked at each of his siblings, giving him hopeful smiles before he reconnected his gaze with Lila.
"They love me back," he finished. Lila raised her blade, the tip of the jagged metal pressed against his leather clothing. "You don't know me, Diego!" She insisted. "Don't I? I know we can be your family. If you and your sister will have us," Lila looked over at the Hargreeves, all of them nodding to her that Diego spoke the truth.
Before Lila could answer, dozens of gunshots filled the air, and for a brief moment, Dusk could see The Handler had returned with a rifle, shooting every one of her siblings at lightning speed. Determined to protect her lover, the raven tightly wrapped herself around Klaus, gasping as she felt the bullets puncture her lungs, tear through her spine, and rip open her carotid artery. Despite her protection, Klaus got shot, dying instantly with a single bullet to the head.
The two lovers fell to the ground, still wrapped tightly in each other's arms. Through the unbearable pain, Dusk stared down at the love of her life's body, tearfully muttering the words, "I-I love you," before she succumbed to her injuries.
~~~~~~~~
One minute earlier...
"I know we can be your family. If you and your sister will have us," A loud gasp came from the barn entrance, and everybody looked over to see Five pointing a rifle at The Handler, who held her hands in the air. Lila trembling with uncertainty glared at her. "Is it true what Five said?" She quivered. The Handler said nothing, only glaring at Five for ruining her plan to end them all.
"Answer me! Is it true?" Lila demanded. Just as The Handler was about to open her mouth, gunshots filled the air, but instead of hitting the siblings, they were directed towards her, ripping through her body, leaving everybody speechless by what they just witnessed. "Oh my god!" an unfamiliar voice gasped. That was the voice of Victoria, who heard the commotion inside the barn.
While still in shock, Lila took this as an opportunity to get away, grabbing the briefcase the Handler had left behind. "Vic, we gotta go!" She called out to the redhead. Victoria snapped out of her state of shock and grabbed Lila's free hand. Before they were transported out of Dallas, the redhead gave Dusk a look of pity before disappearing with a flash of blue light.
Five shifted towards the front of the barn, still holding the Handler's rifle, coming face to face with a tall blonde man who held a similar gun. As the two had their stand-off, the siblings prepared themselves in case the man tried to pull anything. Unexpectedly, Five lowered his weapon, calling a truce with a single word, "Enough,"
After pondering for a moment, the other man agreed, dropping his gun and walking out of the barn. "Who the hell was that guy?" Klaus questioned, breaking the unsettling silence. Before anybody could respond, a loud cry for help came from the cellar. Immediately everyone rushed downstairs, noticing Harlan curled up in the corner, his powers once again deactivated.
"Harlan! Whatever it is I gave you, I can take it back, okay?" Vanya said, taking Harlan's hands as he just stared at her. Just then, Vanya used her hands to suck the powers out of the little boy, leaving her siblings shocked and astonished by what was happening. Come on, Vanny. I know you can do it! Dusk silently cheered as the forcefield slowly began to dim.
Harlan looked around, seeing the faces of everybody around him. "Oh, baby! My sweet baby!" Sissy gasped with delight, embracing her son as tightly as she could. "Good job, Vanya," Dusk chuckled softly as Number Seven grinned like the Cheshire Cat.
~~~~~~~
It was finally over. The Hargreeves siblings ended the second apocalypse and defeated the Handler and her command of assassins. They had no idea what to do now, so they all sat in different parts of Sissy's house, reflecting on their victory. Klaus sat in the debris-filled living room, staring at Dave's dog tags. Strangely, he didn't feel sad. Instead, he was happy with the time they spent, and he silently prayed he was somewhere safe.
"Klausy, you alright?" Dusk asked, stepping into the room. "Of course, darling! Come here," he motioned, patting the empty spot next to him as she sat down. "What a day, am I right?" She exhaled, making him chuckle. "You can say that again," he replied. Even in the darkened room, he could still see his moonlit rose's brilliant smile and affection-filled eyes.
"You know, I'll miss Dallas. Things around here have been hectic, but I found it interesting," Dusk ran a gentle hand through his brown locks, nodding in agreement. The two lovebirds slowly began to lean towards one another, sealing their love with a kiss. But not just any kiss, a kiss full of joy, relief, and above all, passion. Through all their struggles with drug addiction, cheating exes, and saving the world, they still found their way to one another.
Klaus pulled away, slightly panting as he expressed he wanted to ask Dusk something. "Whenever we get back to 2019, would you wanna go on a date? It doesn't have to be fancy. We could stare at the moon and stars if that's what you want," Dusk kissed his shaven cheek, the tiny hairs making her giggle at their touch. "I'd love that,"
"Dusk! Klaus! We gotta get home!" Five shouted from outside, capturing their attention. Their eyes lightened up, already imagining going back to the academy and seeing Pogo and Grace alive and well. Hand in hand they walked to the front, the rest of their siblings eagerly waiting for them. "Alright, everyone ready?" Five asked, flipping a few of the dials on the briefcase. As they all took hands, prepared to go back to the present, Klaus stopped them all, claiming he forgot something.
Playfully rolling her eyes, Dusk watched as her boyfriend grabbed a nearby black cowboy hat, adjusting it on his head. With final confirmation, Five flicked the switch, and they all disappeared with a single blue flash. About a split second later, they all appeared in the entry room of The Umbrella Academy. "Wh-what day is it?" Allison asked, looking towards Five, who skimmed through the headlining newspaper. "April 2, 2019, the day after the apocalypse," he answered, making all the siblings cheer and hug one another. "How about we all celebrate with a drink? Whiskeys on me!" Klaus offered. "Maybe I should go look for Claire," Allison said, looking toward the front doors.
"Come on, Alli! At least one drink?" Dusk persuaded, pulling on her sister's hand. Klaus joined in on the fun, taking Allison's other hand and leading her into the living room. "Oh, alright! But just one drink!" She caved in. As they all gathered in the living room, Diego spotted something different compared to the last time they were in the house. "Why is there a painting of Ben over the mantelpiece?"
A squeaking noise came from one of the chairs across the room, along with a scruffy voice. "I knew you'd show up eventually," it spoke, standing up to reveal it was Reginald. "Dad? You're alive," Luther stated, his jaw slightly hung open. "Why shouldn't I be?"
How is he still alive? He's supposed to be dead! "Y-you're right. We're just happy that we're home and together as a family again," Dusk stuttered, trying to comprehend the right words. "Home? This isn't your home," Reginald stated. "What are you talking about? This is the Umbrella Academy!" Allison said, wondering if Reginald was acting delusional.
"Wrong again. This is the Sparrow Academy," Footsteps came from the upper level, stopping at the railing. The Hargreeves siblings all looked up to see the shadows of six figures, one of them being that of a glowing cube. Another pair of footsteps entered the room, another voice sounding oh-so-familiar. "Dad, who the hell are these assholes?"
The shock was becoming too much, for the siblings were in yet another predicament. They had not returned home but instead, ended up in some alternate universe, where their brother Ben was still alive.
"Shit,"
