~ Chapter Eighteen ~

Klaus's words echoed in Dusk's mind. I lost someone. The only person I've ever truly loved more than myself. Even if they hadn't seen each other in years and the romantic affections faded as they parted ways, it still hurt that he didn't acknowledge the childhood crushes they had on one another. "Well, you're luckier than most. When you lose someone, at least you can see them whenever you want," At the moment, Dusk wanted to slug Diego because all he was doing was making her even sadder.

He looked over to the car door mirror, seeing Hazel walk out of the doughnut shop. "That's our man," he said. "Hey, I know that guy," Klaus spoke up, looking over to the other mirror. "How would you know him?" Dusk questioned, trying to sound calm to hide her heartbreak. "He and an angry lady tortured me. I barely got out with my life," He explained. "Well, are we going to get this guy or what?" Dusk asked, irritated by the long silence after Klaus's words.

"Yeah, Let's get going," Diego nodded before starting the car and trailing just a few cars behind Hazel's. They kept following him until they reached a motel, but this one was different from the previous one. "That's not the same motel," Klaus noted as Diego parked behind an Ice Cream truck. "That lady who saved you got killed in the other motel. They had to take off to avoid getting arrested," Diego explained to the junkie.

"Patch? I liked her," the raven asked, slightly stunned with hearing this news. She was aware that Diego was involved with the detective, but she never heard about her death. "Yeah, that's her," Number Two said, slightly shaking his head as he looked through Klaus's side window. The curtains of one of the rooms closed, giving him the indication that that was where the assassins were hiding. "Bingo,"

"You do know that killing these people is not gonna make you feel any better, right?" Klaus sighed. "Yeah, but when it's done, I'm going to sleep like a baby," Diego replied. "Sure, you will," Dusk scoffed. Diego looked out at the motel window for another second before opening the car door, instructing his siblings to stay inside. "What are you talking about? This guy tortured me!" Klaus whined. "I have a plan," his brother answered before shutting the door.

Dusk glanced over at Klaus for a moment, swallowing her pain before she got out of the car, following close behind Diego. He carefully walked up the stairs, hoping not to make too much noise. As he reached the top step, he turned around to see that Klaus and Dusk had not followed instructions. "So, what exactly is the plan, big guy?" Dusk whispered. "I told you two to stay in the car!" he hissed. "Yeah, but you also told me that licking a nine-volt battery would give me pubes,"

Unlike Klaus's other jokes, Dusk didn't hold back a laugh or even crack a smile. He took notice of this, and he started to silently wonder if she was okay. "We were eight," Diego clarified. Klaus just shrugged and tried to walk the rest of the way before Diego grabbed and led the two back downstairs. "For once, I need you to listen to me, okay? Now, go back to the car. If I don't come out in two minutes, that means I'm probably dead. So if that happens, get help, okay?" Diego instructed them again.

"Ugh, fine!" Dusk sighed. Diego went back up the stairs, glaring and silently telling them to go. Reluctantly, Dusk and Klaus walked back towards the car. Diego kicked the motel door in, hoping to find the people who killed his girlfriend, but instead, he found a loud movie playing on the TV. Tires screeched from outside, and he looked over to see a car coming down the road. Cha-Cha pulled out her rifle and started shooting at the Hargreeves, hitting him in the shoulder.

Suddenly he was pulled back towards protection as the bullets continued to fly through the air. "Dusk? Klaus?" He asked, stunned that they had saved him. "You still think we're idiots?" Dusk smirked. "Yes, you guys are still idiots. They're getting away," Diego sighed, quickly running down the stairs, holding his injured arm. Back at the car, he bit back a sigh as he looked at the flat tire. "Was this all part of your master plan?" Klaus asked. "Shut up!"

"We can use this!" Dusk pointed over to the Ice Cream Truck parked behind them.  "Good idea! Let's go!" Diego said before they got into the truck and sped off, hoping that they wouldn't lose the assassins.
