Part Twenty-nine (Red is not always love)

Part Twenty nine

°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•°•

“You're in my class for real?!” I had asked when I saw her seated on of the chairs in my class; the morning when I came to school. I couldn't believe my eyes even though I had sleepless nights thinking about what she told me.
Precious Nduka is my classmate now.
I felt giddy just thinking about it.

Sooner than later, our friendship blossomed into something more and before you know it I was on my knees; with a hibiscus flower that I had picked on my way to school, proposing that she become my girlfriend. I knew that I wasn't working with my sense at that time, but the problem was that I don't care. I just believed that I loved her too much to care. We were seen everywhere. There wasn't any party she was invited and I wasn't present and vice versa; and there wasn't any game I had to play after school that she wouldn't wait behind to cheer for me.
It was true love for me. We continued in our fervent and steadfast relationship until one day; and as it is said, 'all things must come to an end.'
So did my foolishness and obsession end.

A day after her fifteenth birthday, I saw the shock of my life. She was taking photos of the scholarship form I had with UNICEF. I was shocked and walked towards her to ask her why she would do such a thing; only to find out that she was taking photos and sending them to Lanre.

"What is this for?" I shouted and pulled the paper out from the desk.

"Ehm...it was..." She chuckled nervously and started walking closer to me. I moved back as she came.

"You know it was just..." She started mumbling some words I couldn't hear and broke down in cold sweat. Her face soon became covered with water.
It was then that I remembered; Lanre was my closest competitor and second best player in the football game that had awarded me the scholarship.

At that moment nothing else mattered to me. I ran out of the class to the Principal's office as fast as my legs could carry me and presented the form to him. After calming me down and asking a few questions, he called Precious too. The interrogation later revealed that Lanre was her boyfriend and had convinced her to help him get a photo of the form. With his dad having a higher power than mine, he could tamper with the proposition and get the scholarship in his favour.
I was tongue-tied after the revelation. I never would have believed had someone told me, that Precious would be this sly and wicked.

The rumour spread throughout the school for quite awhile and I was the victim of scorn and pity. I hated it. It was the worst period of my educational life.
Precious on the other hand, was expelled from the school and I later found out from Hassan that she wasn't even as rich as she portrayed herself to be. She lived with her aunt and uncle and have always been a greedy person.
She accepted Lanre's proposal because he was rich and had gifted her an Itel phone on her birthday.

Looking at her now, all I felt was repulsion. She's still a sight to behold, I'll give her that but whenever I remembered what she did, goosebumps run through my body. She's putting on a red crop top and skinny black shorts with black shoes. She had her arm wrapped over a dark, taller boy's shoulder. They were looking through the chocolate rack before her face turned towards me.

My body went still. I couldn't decide if I should smile at her or pretend not to see her. Her face contorted into shock,   that meant she wasn't expecting to see me again in her life. She whispered something into the boy's ear who only nodded in reply, then she sauntered towards me.

"Merry Christmas, Dave." Her pet name for me. I'm certain she's mocking me now.

"Religion doesn't look good on you. Infact it's sickening, you can drop the act around me please." I deadpanned.

"What?... can't we at least try to be civil after all, we were a thing before."

I scoffed, "That's what we'll always be...were."

She simply rolled her eyes at my words and started checking out her red painted nails before my face. From the side of my eye, I could see the boy walking towards us.

"Hey babe," he pecked her cheek when he got close enough. "An old friend?"

‘Gross.’

He's not even as handsome as he seems, but he sure dresses well. I'm certain she's with him for the weight of the pocket and not the face or heart behind the clothes. The Prada pumps he was wearing cost a lot, and adding the Chanel polo and Louis Vuitton watch. He sure has a lot of money.

"Yes, he was. But it's nothing important now." She replied.

Yeah sure, the nerve you have.’

"Hey man. I'm Tobe and you are?" He pulled his hand for a handshake.

"David. Nice to meet you." I accepted his hand.

"Thank you." He smiled.
I wanted to tell him about my relationship with Precious in the past, but decided against it. It was none of my business now.

"Be careful these days and also take care of yourself." I told him and pulled out my hand.

"Sure. Thanks."

"Babe, we still have to shop for a lot more things. Let's go, see you around David." Precious waved me off and practically pulled Tobe out of my path. She's nervous I could see, she believes I would rattle to him about our past.

Now that I even thought about it, she's so fake. I wondered why I never noticed that before, she's a first class hypocrite and pretentious slay girl and very different from Nnenna who seems so real to me.

I suddenly remembered that I was here with Nnenna and Hassan. I scanned the crowd, trying to find them. I couldn't call out to them because the sound of the music ‘Felix Navidad’, playing in the shop wouldn't let them hear. I felt guilty for ignoring them like that. I was about to pull out my phone from my pocket in order to call Hassan but I heard his voice instead.

"Hey bro, I see you're free now." He remarked.

"Where's Nnenna?" I asked sheepishly.

"She's gone home. She said her Mum would be worried so she had to go. We've been trying to get your attention for some time now, but you were too interested staring off somewhere."

"Oh no."

"Is there a problem?" His hard face morphed into one filled with concern.

‘Of course there is. I didn't even get to take her home.’

"No... I'll tell you about it later. Are we done here?"

He scratched his neck and nodded slowly, something he always did whenever he's unsure.
"Yes we are, let's go."

EXCERPT FROM MY NEW BOOK 'THE SHAM BRIDE'.

       Lies are temporary solution to
      permanent problems.”

                          ~***~

¶ "You said it was important so I hurried down here as soon as I can. Tell me what the problem is?" Doris, tall in height with the perfect figure eight shape, small bust and round face with brown pupils, asked her twin sister who has similar features.

The only difference in their outfit were their shoes and fact that Dorine was in a white bridal dress and Doris, in a purple polo and denim jeans.

"I have a favour to ask of you." Dorine said to her sister while removing the pins that held her wavy hair together.

Doris hissed. The only time Dorine acts sensibly towards her is whenever she's about to ask for a favour.

"What is it that you want this time?"

"I want you to replace me as the bride..."

Doris burst into laughter before Dorine could complete her sentence. She balanced herself on the closet beside the dressing mirror.

"Are you out of your mind, please tell me this is one of your jokes?"

"I'm serious Doris. I need to go to Singapore right now, my business over there would be in shambles if I don't do something to stop it. I promise I'll be back in two days time, all you have to do is pretend to be me for some hours."

"You're crazy! Kedu odika egwuregwu bu ihe a, what's going on with you?" Doris barked at her sister who has already peeled her gown off.

"Could you keep your voice down. I've already done the main thing, you just have to put on an act for the reception ceremony. By the way you're an actress, you'll do such a good job that no one would notice." Dorine bent down to unbuckle her shoes.

"Being an actress I know that it's just behind the camera, this is a real life situation we're talking about and I'm not about to lie to millions of people out there just so you can have your way." Doris whispered.

"What would you have me do, run away during my own wedding day. You and I both know that Matthew has no idea that I have a twin sister, your job hasn't given you the chance to meet him. I must say that was a card played well by fate. Besides I can't give up the business I spent my sweat and tears on for years because of a man I only met five months ago." Dorine sighed.

She walked closer to her sister and held her by the shoulders.
"You won't have to keep up the pretence for too long, I'll come back as soon as possible. Can't you just help your sister with this?" She was blackmailing her with the sister card.

"You said you'll return on time?" Doris asked and regretted her statement when she saw the smile that brightened Dorine's face.

"Yes I promise, now just pull off your clothes so I can wear them. My makeup artist would come in anytime soon and she shouldn't see us together." Dorine informed her sister who is still trying to get over the shock of the reality displaying before her.

Doris walked to the dressing mirror and started to remove her clothes slowly.

Dorine who couldn't wait a moment longer, helped her twin to pull off her polo and jean.
She helps Doris get dressed in her too-white and expensive wedding gown, wore the gloves and ring on her hand as well. Then she picked up her sister's clothes and put them on.

"I have to leave now, can't risk anyone seeing us together." Dorine announced and pocketed her sister's Android phone.

"What about my hair?" Doris pointed to her wavy hair still left unclipped.

"Henrietta would handle it. Please just take care," She moved behind her sister and placed her head on Doris' shoulder.

"Just think of this as a new movie you've always wanted to shoot in and just do what you've always done with each new project...have fun. I'll be back before you know it." She gave Doris a peck on the cheek and made her way towards the exit door.

Doris could only stare helplessly at the retreating figure of her twin.
Suddenly Dorine turned back, Doris harboured the ray of hope that she would change her mind but she only said.

"Oh and Doris, don't sleep with my husband."

Doris was flustered, of all the advice she could give it had to be this.

"You know well enough that I haven't met your husband before, sleeping with him is the last thing on my mind right now."

"Good." And with that Dorine walked out, for real.

Doris hoped this was all her dream but she was wrong. Soon enough, a short, light in complexion chubby lady walked in the room.

Standing at akimbo she asked, "what have you done to your hair?" She started moving closer to Doris.

"Now I have to fix it again. Sit down, are you ready?"

Doris couldn't tell which way she meant the question, whether she was ready to begin her role or for her sudden wedding reception celebration.
