WHEN THOMAS AND NEWT WERE
already running down the stairs, Evie was holding Gally back by the sleeve of his sweater.
The blond boy paused in his movement and turned to her questioningly.
The girl sighed.
"Im sorry for what I said." she said, looking to the ground.
"It's just difficult for me to trust you, you know after everything." She said, still avoiding his eyes.
"I'm sorry Evie. For giving you a hard time.. for everything. I guess I was just.. scared." Gally said and Evie's eyes snapped up to meet his. His look was genuine and the girl was surprised that he admitted being scared.
"We all were." She responded. A short and awkward silence stood between them and before Gally could say or do anything, Evie had stood on her tiptoes and pulled him into a hug. The girl had wrapped her arms around his upper arms and rested her chin on his shoulder. His muscles relaxed as he let himself melt into the embrace.
"If you really didn't know what you were doing when Chuck.." she broke her sentence off, pushing away from Gally and looking at him sharply.
"If it wasn't your fault.. then I forgive you." She said.
"And I give you my trust."
"Why?" He asked confused. A huge question mark was drawn on his face. Evie sighed.
"We're in this shit together now. We have one enemy and nobody's perfect after all." she said, patting him on the shoulder.
Gally looked at the girl, still puzzled but visibly relieved.
"Thanks.. Evie." He said her name so unsure, like he was scared that her threat from earlier would still come true.
"But I dare you, if you mess this up, it'll be the last thing you do." Evie's face had lost all softness as she looked at him seriously.
Gally nodded.
—
No one said a word on their way back. Thomas seemed to be lost in thought and the others didn't want to disturb him.
Evie knew that he was not prepared to come into contact with Teresa in any way at all. Yet alone use her to help him getting into the WCKD building.
They arrived at the ladder and Evie got a dirty look from Lorence when she stepped out of the whole.
"Oh come on! We came back." she said, raising her hands defensively. Newt gave the girl a reproachful look as well, before they made their way into one of the workshops. Gally came in with plans of the floors of the huge WCKD headquarters and spread them out on the table.
They began to plan, which meant that Gally explained his plan to kidnap Teresa and Evie spoke against it.
"Why do we need Teresa? Can't we kidnap some other employee?" Evie asked, visibly annoyed. Gally shook his head in response.
"I've been watching her. She has access to everything! She's at the top of the rankings." Gally explained.
"Ava's lapdog." the blonde girl growled and put her head in her hands. Thomas had been leaning against the doorframe with his back to them the whole time, staring absently into the distance. But now he turned around and came back into the room.
"No. There must be another way!" He said and Brenda groaned, annoyed by the discussion they had. If it was for her, she would've already gotten Teresa and be choking her until the girl would give them all the information they needed.
"And which one? You saw it yourself - it's the only chance we have." Gally replied.
"Do you really think she'll help us?" Thomas asked.
"I'm not gonna ask for her permission!" Gally said and Evie grinned. She looked at Newt, who was sitting silently in his seat and staring at the plans, brooding.
"Am I missed something here? This is the same girl who betrayed us, correct? The same dick." Brenda now said.
"I like her." Gally commented on that.
"What's going on here?" Brenda then asked. Thomas remained silent.
"What, are you afraid your little girlfriend's gonna get hurt?!" Newt now spoke up.
He received confused looks, but his eyes were only on Thomas' face.
"Mh?" he hummed, raising his eyebrows.
"This has obviously never been just about rescuing Minho. Has it?" He became louder now.
"Wait, what are you talking about?" Thomas asked, confused.
"Teresa. She's the only reason that Minho is even missing in the first place! Now we finally have an opportunity to get him back and what? You don't want to because of her?!"
His whole manner didn't seem like himself. Newt's tone was someone else's.
The boy had gotten up and was walking towards Thomas, who stepped away from him slightly scared.
"Because deep down you still care about her, just admit it." Towards the end, Newt suddenly became dangerously quiet. Everyone else in the room watched the spectacle in silence.
"Newt I-.." Newt grabbed Thomas by the collar and pushed him against the wall.
"DON'T LIE TO ME!
DON'T. LIE. TO ME!"
"Newt!" Evie now shouted warningly and he paused.
When the blond boy realized what he was doing, he returned her shocked look.
"I'm sorry." he mumbled and Thomas stared at him terrified.
"I'm sorry." Then Newt ran out with his hand on his arm.
Thomas followed him shortly afterwards and the others continued to fiddle with their plan until the two of them came back in. Evie felt the need to talk to Newt. However, she knew that she had never been the right person to calm him down.
—
Evie was adjusting her sleeping place when she heard footsteps behind her.
"Can we talk?" Newt asked
"I wouldn't know what about." Evie replied simply and laid out a blanket she had received from the people in Gally's troop.
"Please." Newt whispered and she turned to him. His voice sounded fragile.
He took the few steps toward her and placed a hand on the girl's cheek. His thumb ran over her cheekbone and Evie closed her eyes for a moment. She sighed and took his hand away from her face.
"Don't."
She took a step away from him and faced him.
"I'm sorry about today." he began.
"Today? Newt, you've been acting strange ever since you left the right arm. You're freaking out like you're not yourself!" Evie threw her words at him angrily. She wanted to say that for days now.
"I'm sorry." he said again with a sigh. He took one of her hands again, then walked out of the room where they were sleeping, pulling the girl with him.
He stopped at some place outside in the dark and turned around. For a moment he stared into Evie's eyes, seeming to think, before taking her face in his hands and placing his lips on hers. Evie took a step back and pushed him away.
"Are you serious?" she said gruffly, crossing her arms.
Newt ran his fingers through his hair, almost frantically and nervous.
Evie watched the whole thing skeptically.
"Newt, tell me what's wrong with you. You're not yourself!" she said, trying to remain calm.
"I-.." he tried, but broke off. He looked at the floor, then back at her.
"I.. we should-." he stuttered, having put his hand on the back of his neck before he took it down and stood at an angle in one spot. Eyes fixed on the ground, he said the last thing Evie would have expected him to say.
"I think we need to end this."
"What?" Evie asked, shocked. Newt said nothing and again found his shoes much more interesting than the girl.
"Newt what are you doing? What's wrong, talk to me." She walked towards him and took his hands in hers, but he pulled them away.
"I can't." With these words, he left. A tear rolled down Evie's cheek.
She felt something break inside her. She sat down on one of the large stones and pulled her legs up.
"Evie." she heard Thomas's voice. He sat down next to her.
"Listen, we're going to figure this out, okay? We'll find the cure and.."
"What?" she asked, confused.
"Newt will make it," Thomas said.
"He'll make what?" she asked, even more confused. Thomas looked at her, puzzled.
"Didn't he tell you-.. what's wrong?"
—
"Newt!" Thomas came marching towards the boy, upset.
"What are you doing, man? I told you to tell her what's going on and you're breaking up with her?" he asked angrily.
"Well, we weren't even officially a couple, so it's not really a break u-.." Newt said with a disinterested tone as he was interrupted.
"I don't care what it was!" Thomas hissed
"Doesn't change anything anyway." Newt murmured. His voice was so inconsequential, his shoulders hanging limply from his body as he looked off into the distance.
"This is a bullshit plan Newt. You have to tell her." Thomas said after a moment of silence.
"How am I supposed to explain to your sister that I'm about to become a bloody crank?" Newt snapped at Thomas and the brunette didn't know how to answer him.
"Tell me Thommy, how should I tell her that I'm being eaten by the disease that I'm supposed to be immune to?!"
"Newt listen to me, listen to me!" Thomas had run up to him and was holding the slim boy by the shoulder.
"We have a plan. We'll go in there, get Minho and the cure. Okay? We can help you, alright? You can do it. You'll get through this! Now go to my sister and explain to her what's going on!"
The blond shook his head.
"I'll tell everyone together tomorrow," he said resolutely.
"Okay. But believe me, she's gonna flip out! You know how she is." said the brunette and left. Newt was left alone.

Well sorry 'bout that. Can I just say that I'm sorry for what's about to happen? And beg you to not kill me for it?
