TERESA AND EVIE WALKED SIDE BY
side along the street, towards the large building. A sinking feeling arose in the blonde's stomach as memories of WCKD came to her.
They entered the building and Teresa slowed down.

"Don't stop," Thomas warned, as he was walking close behind them in a WCKD uniform.
Another guard came to a halt in front of them. Unlike Thomas, he was wearing a red jacket.
Thomas and he looked at each other and bowed their heads slightly. Evie immediately recognized from the lanky body that it was Newt.
They walked on together.

Evie nodded to the three of them and turned off.
She only hoped that Paige would believe her and that everything would go well. She came to a stop in front of Janson's office and knocked.

"Yes?" came an annoyed voice from inside and Evie stepped inside. Janson looked at her, petrified. The blonde girl had put on a hard face.

"Evelyn." He stood up, alarmed but still calm.

"Is the offer still on?" she asked. A slight grin appeared on the man's face.

"What changed your mind?" Janson approached Evie.

"Certainly not the fact that I missed you Janson." The rat-like man laughed, which sounded like a dog panting.

"I wanna talk to Paige." She said.

"What did Thomas do to hurt you so much? Or no, what was his name again? Newt. Or whatever you call him." Evie remained silent. She looked at his hair, how it had gotten a lot grayer. He even had a white streak behind his ear.

Every rat gets old, doesn't it?

"Has he left you? No that wouldn't be so bad that you'd turn on him." he advised.

"Or did you see the greater favor?" He started pacing around her. Evie's hands began to sweat.

"It would be nice to have you work for us again. But that's not you, Evie." he said. He cupped her chin with his fingers.

"You are a hypocrite!" She heard his voice close to her ear.

Oh shit.

He grabbed her arm, turned her back to him and before Evie could even form a proper thought in her head, she found her face against the wall. Pain shot through her head, as she gritted her teeth in pain.

"First of all. For no reason in the world would you come back, you're far too stubborn and stupid." The rat grunted in amusement.

"Secondly. You ripped your chip out, otherwise the sensors would have recognized you the moment you stepped in this building."
He had exposed her neck and Evie closed her eyes, trying to think of a way how she could get out of this situation.

"And third." He reached for the gun she was carrying under her jacket.

"Why are you armed?" He asked.

"Self-protection from old men." Evie replied, but sarcasm really wasn't the most helpful thing in a situation like this.

"You've shoveled your own grave Evelyn." She felt him remove his hands from her. Then he grabbed her arm and spun her around to face him. Evie saw her gun lying on the table.

"Well, but now that you're here."
Janson pulled her roughly away from the wall and grabbed something off the table. He came at Evie with quick steps and before she could react in any way, something sharp landed in her throat. Evie saw the table coming towards her before she fell into black nothingness. The last thing she heard was Jansons annoying high pitched voice.

"You won't believe who's paying us a visit."

Evie opened her eyes with difficulty. Her head was pounding painfully and she wanted to touch her forehead, but she couldn't.
She looked at her arm, strapped tightly to an orange mattress. Evie tugged at it, but nothing happened.
She looked at her other arm, but it was also strapped to the bed she was lying on. Just like her upper body and legs.
Evie yanked with all her might but couldn't manage to free herself.

The door opened and Ava Paige came into the room with brisk steps.
She paused in her movement when she saw the blonde girl lying on the mattress, strapped to the bed.

"You never cease to fascinate me Evelyn." She said. Janson entered the room behind her, a syringe in his hand. Ava held out her hand and Janson placed the syringe in her palm.

"I didn't want this. I'm on your side Paige. Show me what I forgot." Evie couldn't suppress the tremor in her voice.

Paige ran towards the girl and came closer to her arm with the needle. Evie tried to pull it away somehow, but Janson grabbed her arm and rammed it onto the mattress so hard, that it hurt awfully. The girl gasped in pain. She felt a small stinging sensation on her arm.

"You made your choice long before you lost your memories Evelyn. I understand that now!" Paige said. Her voice no longer motherly.
Paige pulled the needle out of Evie's skin again and walked over to a table. Evie watched her every move as she pulled out a jar of blue liquid.

She mixed the extracted blood with it, then picked up a pipette and put a few drops of it under a microscope. The woman bent down and looked through it.

Paige's features fell slack. She looked into the microscope as if she had seen a Griewer in it, then looked at Evie. The girl only tensed more.

"Janson!" She strode out, Janson close behind her, leaving Evie lying alone in the room. The blonde girl continued to yank on the straps, but it was helpless. She let out a desperate breath.

"Good luck!" Gally said as the boys ran out. Newt felt a painful twinge in his upper body and panic rose in the boy.
If the virus continued to spread at this rate, he knew he wouldn't be himself by the end of the day.
They arrived at the elevator. Thomas pressed the button. However, the elevator took its time.

"Come on!" the brunette said impatiently. Then the doors opened and they got in. Before the doors closed, however, an arm stretched out between them.

The elevator doors opened again and Janson stepped inside.
Thomas immediately tightened his grip on his gun. There was silence for a moment, then Janson began to speak.

"You work late." Teresa probably didn't know what to say.

"You know, that's what I like about you Teresa. No matter how stressful the situation may be, you never give up."

"In times like these, you need a friend you can rely on." He said and Newt rolled his eyes in annoyance.

"Teresa, did you know that Evelyn showed up here?" Hanson turned to her and Teresa thought about how she should react. She decided to look at him in shock.

"Ava's running tests on her, seems like she's found something." he said. Newt behind him felt his heart skip a beat, only to beat three times faster than before. Thomas grip around his gun grew even tighter as his body was tense.

"You should go to her, take a look and tell me what it is. Ava's hardly going to tell anyone, can you do that for me Teresa?"
The man looked intently at the girl. Newt noticed how insecure and fragile she suddenly seemed.
A girl manipulated by psychopaths.

"Yes," Teresa replied meekly.

"I will, I just have to do something," she stammered.
The elevator arrived and they got out.
Janson was left in the elevator and Newt walked the few steps to Teresa.

"What the hell?! We're getting her out of there before this Ava is gonna harm her!" The blond hissed angrily.

"First we save Minho. Evie knows what she's doing. We have to stick to the plan." Thomas said, but didn't seem very sure of himself.

If anyone on this planet had no idea what they were doing, it was Evie.

"Thomas, you have to listen to me! If you have the serum, it won't save Newt. It might buy him a little time but-.." Newt interrupted Teresa by putting his hand on her shoulder.

"Just ignore her. She's trying to manipulate you." He pushed the brunette roughly by the shoulder.

"Thomas listen to me! You know what's going on out there. People are dying, the world is ending, there's something about your blood that I don't understand and that's what Ava found in Evie." she tried again.

"Open up!" Thomas said stubbornly. Teresa obeyed, opened the door with the finger scan and then continued talking.

"Let me run some tests. I promise I'll protect you." Thomas ripped his helmet off his head.

"Yeah?! Like you protected Minho?" The brunette hissed and stepped towards the girl. Newt held him by the shoulder.

"What are you doing?!" Newt looked around nervously being ignored by Thomas.

"How many more deaths do you need? Huh?! How many more people are you going to imprison, torture, KILL! When does it stop?!" Thomas confronted them.

"When we've found the cure." Teresa quipped back.

"THERE IS NO DAMN CURE!" he hissed, trying to keep his voice calm towards the end.

"Save your words Teresa." Janson's voice rang out. He came at her with his gun raised. Newt responded quickly and raised his gun immediately at the man. Other guards approached at the sides of the bridge.

"He made up his mind a long time ago." The rat-like man looked at Newt.

"Just like your little girlfriend!" He murmured.

"There's no point in teaching them anything else, they're useless in the end." Anger boiled up inside Newt.
He wanted to run at the man, put a bullet in his skull for daring to talk about Evie like that.

"Drop it boy!" Shouted one of the guards from the side. Thomas grabbed Teresa and held the bullet from his gun to her head.

"Get back. Let us out." He warned.

"Hey Thomas, come on. It's me!" said Janson calmly.

"I've known you longer than you can remember, you're not gonna shoot her." Said the man.

"You think so?" Thomas mocked back. He looked at Newt, who still had his gun raised. Janson lowered his.

"All right, then. Shoot her." he said calmly. Thomas thought hard, of course he couldn't shoot her.

"Shoot her!" Janson hissed.
Teresa suddenly pushed Thomas off, shoved him towards Newt and pulled a lever hanging on the wall.
A protective wall fell down, shielding them from the shots falling on it. Newt took off his helmet.

His hair was sticking to his forehead with sweat and his breathing was hectic. Janson banged on the glass, when they continued to run through the corridors.

Janson came storming into the room. He was furious and filled with rage.

"You and Thomas think you're so clever! You think you can pull this off, but not with me!" he said with a psychopathic grin.
He spoke to his watch.

"Mr. Ziac, I changed my mind, I want everything from Provant A7," he said. Evie was well aware of who Provant A7 was.
The rat man only grinned even more at the sight of her desperate expression.

"But sir, that could kill him." someone on the other end of the line objected.

"I think I've made myself clear," said Janson, looking at Evie provocatively. She rattled the straps as Paige entered the room.

"Okay! Okay! Take me. Take my blood, whatever you want, but leave Minho alone." She looked pleadingly at the blond doctor that now
re-entered the room. The thought of Minho brought tears to the blonde girl's eyes.

"What's going on?" Paige asked strictly, looking from Evie to Janson.

"Your worry is confirmed Ava!" Janson ran up to the woman.

"THOMMY's here!" the gray-haired man hissed through clenched teeth and stormed out of the room.
Teresa then came in. She looked back and forth between Evie and Paige.

"Look at her blood." Paige said as her watch beeped.

"Mrs. Paige, the kids in basement three broke out."

"I'm coming." said Paige quietly, her eyes finding Evie's. She approached the girl and rested her hand on Evie's leg.

"The war you're leading.." The woman began sternly, her eyes cold just like the time when she sent Evie into the maze.

"..you're nit gonna win this!" Goosebumps ran over Evie at how serious her voice sounded now.

"Nah, you don't understand." the girl whispered softly, leaning as far forward, as she was able to.

"We have already won. Ava." Evie hissed.

"It's only a matter of time." The girl said, leaning as far forward as she could. Ava's expression showed a short strike of sadness.

"You think you're so clever, Evelyn." she said.

"You're just causing further destruction and chaos. It's destroying the only hope that is left. I thought you were more than that." With that, the blonde doctor left the room, thinking about how much she had destroyed this girl.

In that moment Evie shamefully found a small wish inside of her. She wanted nothing more but to be the little kid again that Ava Paige had been proud of. She wanted the Ava back that had her hand on Evie's shoulder and had acted towards her like a mother.

Evie then heard a gasp and turned her head towards Teresa, who looked at her in total shock.

"What? What is it about me that you had to torture me for months?" Evie hissed.
Teresa breathed in and out shakily.

"Your blood Evie." she pointed at the microscope.

"It doesn't just slow down the virus or paralyze it like it does with all the others." She said and Evie felt the room getting colder.

"The reason Brenda is still alive after her bite, even if she didn't get any new treatments.." the brunette girl rambled, staring at the blonde with wide eyes as if she was connecting all the dots.

„All the others need more and more but Brenda got better with one single treatment! I wondered why.." she looked at the microscope, then back at Evie.

"Your blood breaks down the virus. It destroys it."
