THE NEXT TIME, EVIE OPENED HER
eyes, she looked directly into the brown ones of Newt. She heard voices around her and saw the room being flooded with light.

"Hi, welcome back to earth." he whispered and stroked a strand of hair behind the girl's ear. She was lying with her head on his lap, a terrible headache spreading over her forehead, as if someone had stomped on it.

"What happened?" she mumbled, she ran her hand over her face and through her hair.

"When you didn't come out after a while, we went in. This stuff had knocked you out. Drinking with nothing in your stomach never ends well." Newt smirked. Something about that smirk made a good feeling flow through Evie's body.
As if the world had never ended, it made her feel safe in his arms. As if everything would be all right again.

"How do you know?" she asked, mumbling. Newt shrugged his shoulders.

"What do you think we were doing back in the maze?" a grin appeared on his lips.

Of course.
Teenagers in a patch of meadow with beasts all around them.
Who wouldn't try to blow their brains out any way they could?
It was hard to believe that they had started working voluntarily. That was probably why it was so important to Alby.

Evie remembered that horrible drink, that was made by Gally, which Minho gave her at the big fire.
She didn't even want to know what was in there, but newt always seemed to like it. Maybe because of the effect it had on someone.

"I don't even wanna know." Evie grinned.
Groaning, she sat up. She immediately felt dizzy and Newt pulled her back.

"Take it easy, okay? Rest." He whispered.

"What about Thomas and.. Brenda?" Evie asked.

"They're fine." Newt pointed at the two of them. Only now did Evie look around the room they were in. It was one of the crumbling buildings. The sun shone through the large, glassless windows and lit up the room.

"Son of a bitch!" Evie winced and looked at the cursing Jorge. He punched Marcus in the face, who was tied to a chair.

"I'm sorry, you are going to have to leave my house!" he raved and Thomas stood up.

"Listen. I don't enjoy hurting you. Okay? Where's the right arm Marcus?" said Jorge, spreading his arms out invitingly.

"Wait, that's Marcus?" Thomas asked, confused. Marcus giggled.

"The kid catches on quick! Hey are you the brains of this operation ha.." Jorge grabbed Marcus' mop of hair and pulled his head upwards, causing the blonde to groan painfully.

"I know, you know where they're hiding. You'll tell me and I'll make you a deal!" The blond man just chuckled.

"You can come with us," Jorge suggested.

"I burned that bridge a long time ago. Besides, I made my own deal." Markus spoke.

"You're the one who taught me, never miss an opportunity!" he chuckled again.

"What's he talking about?" asked Newt. Marcus groaned.

"I'm talking about supply and demand! WCKD wants all the immunes they can get. I help provide them for them. So I lure the kids in here, they get drunk, have a good time and.." he explained.

„Later WCKD comes in and separates the wheat from the chaff." Evie's stomach turned.
She felt nothing but animosity for this man.

"I changed my mind Hermano. I do enjoy hurting you!" With that, Jorge shoved him backwards, pulled out his gun and held it to his head.

"TALK!" The older man shouted. Marcus mumbled something. Then they pulled him up again.

"They have an outpost in the mountains. But you won't make it. Half of WCKD is after you!" He laughed psychopathically.
A grin crept onto Jorge's face.

"Maybe not on foot." He grabbed Marcus's collar and smiled as if he had given him a flight to the Caribbean.

"Where's Berta?" He asked, grinning psychopathically, and Marcus' smile disappeared from his face. He almost whimpered as he looked to the ground and back at Jorge.

"Not Berta." Squeaked the blond.

"Who's Berta?" asked Evie as she sat up again.

Berta turned out to be a magnificent car. Evie was almost sorry to get it so dirty.
Thomas put his arm around the blonde girl and smiled at her uncertainly.
Evie rested her head on his shoulder and enjoyed the fresh air blowing in her face through the window. For a moment, everything was right with the world, she thought. They would get to the right arm and their problems would be forgotten.

Newt grinned at them from the passenger seat, looking like a little kid driving a car for the first time. They probably were. For that one moment, they all had peace on their side.

As the paths became narrower and they drove through the scree of the mountains, they had to stop because abandoned cars were blocking the road in front of them. They got out of the car.
Dizziness came over Evie unexpectedly and she leaned on the hood of the car.

"What's wrong?" asked a worried voice behind her.

"I'm fine." She replied.

Lie.

Newt looked at the girl critically as shots rang out.

"Shit GET DOWN!" screamed Thomas. Evie rushed to one of the cars and someone threw themselves at her as one of the shots nearly hit her.
They fell to the ground and the blond girl looked up at the person that threw themselves at her.
Newt looked into her eyes, panting heavily, seeming to frantically scan her for injuries. He must have saved her life.

"Are you all right?!" Evie asked worriedly. The blond nodded and crawled to the door of the car. Evie's heart was racing and sweat was running down her forehead.

"Hey, is everyone okay?" Thomas called from a few meters away.

"We're fine!" replied Teresa.

"Did anyone see where those bloody shots came from?!" Newt shouted angrily next to Evie.
There was silence for a while.

"Watch out! Get ready to run back to the car! And cover your ears!" Jorge shouted. Evie got ready to run for her life when she felt something hard and cold on the back of her neck.

"Get up!" a female voice commanded. Goosebumps ran over Evie and she imagined what might happen next.
The blonde girl obeyed and stood up. The same thing happened to Newt next to her.

"Put your hands up!" the woman said, still holding the gun to Evie's neck. She put her hands up to her head.
The other girl, who was threatening the others with a gun, eyed them all in turn.
She had brown dreadlocks and a scarf hid her face.

Evie and Newt stood tensely with the others.
Evie felt dizzy again and swayed for a moment. Then she quickly regained her composure. But the girl had noticed.

She scanned Evie, then looked on and caught sight of the slender little boy who had become one of the newest members of their group.

"Aris?!"
They all looked at the blond boy who had been left out the whole time.

"Oh my God Harriett?!" he asked, taking his arms down. The girl took off the scarf. Evie felt the metal of the gun get away from her neck and a blonde girl appeared behind her.

"Sonya!"Aris cried out happily.

"You're so lucky we didn't shoot you, you dumbass!" said Sonya. They hugged Aris and the rest of the boys exchanged confused looks.

"Wait, what's going on?" asked Newt.

"We were in the maze together." Aris explained. It was nice to see him so happy. The girl, whose name was Harriett, waved her hand, probably signaling to someone in the mountains.

"Come with me." she said and they walked to some cars.

"Do you know where we can find the right arm?" asked Thomas.

"Get in!" Hariett said and opened the car door.

They drove a few miles further into the mountains. Evie sat next to Minho. Black dots kept appearing in her vision and she tried not to lose consciousness.
She no longer knew whether it was just this stuff she had been drinking or the lack of sleep and food over the last few days. She could feel that the stitching on her shoulder had probably been torn open and the shirt under her jacket was stained with red blood.
In any case, she had the feeling that her circulation seemed to have completely collapsed.
Minho wasn't stupid, he noticed it of course and carefully put his arm around the girl to give her some support.

"We'll find some help for you there." he whispered and she nodded. She then had to think about Jeff, when he promised her to take a look at her shoulder, right before they ran into the maze.

He never did. That wasn't bad for her sake of course but for his. He deserved to be in the right arm.
Evie rested her head on Minho's shoulder, imagining it was Jeff and managed to sleep for a few minutes. She felt the car stop and opened her eyes.

"Come on." Minho said and the girl noticed that he had no stupid comments to make, which was unusual for Minho.
They got out of the car when she felt dizzy again.

"You good?" Minho asked beside her and she held her stomach, feeling it turn.
Her body the  felt awfully heavy and she could only feel herself falling forward, before her mind was filled with blackness.

"Come on we should go back!" Evie heard herself say. She saw a boy, maybe 12 or 13 years old standing before a wired fence. His back was turned to her. She couldn't see that much because the sun had gone down and the sky was already darkening.

"I swear I saw her!" He said, staring at the broken buildings in front of him.

"Saw what?" Evie asked looking behind her constantly.

"The old woman."  Thomas said and Evie felt herself, shaking her head.

"We're not allowed to be here!" She said, even though she knew that her brother would care less about what he was allowed to do.
The boy turned around to Evie and the girl saw his young face with the familiar brown eyes.

"I saw her." He said again.

Evie then froze. Behind the fence were shadows moving.

"Stephen." She then said and Evie wondered why Thomas had another name.

"Get away from the fence." She said, clearly stressed out and as the boy turned back to the fence, he jumped back as he saw a person standing behind it.
It was indeed an old lady. Just with black veins all over her body and even darker, lifeless eyes.

"RUN!" Thomas yelled as he grabbed her hand and pulled her with him.

The next thing she noticed was a hand holding her own. Evie opened her eyes and saw a plastic roof above her. She then noticed, she was lying on a cot in a tent.
Next to her, Newt had laid his head on the cot and was asleep. His hand clasped hers and his hair hung disheveled in his face as he slumbered peacefully.

"How do you know all this?" Evie winced slightly and looked to her left. She saw a brunette woman and Thomas standing in front of another cot. Lying on it she saw Brenda and next to the couch Jorge holding her hand. The woman sighed slightly.

"There was a time when I worked for WCKD." She responded to Thomas question.
Evie's muscles tensed.

Who were these people?!

"I was there. I did everything.. just for THIS. A gift of biology and evolution." She held a syringe in her hand and walked towards Brenda. The girl began to breathe more frantically and Evie saw the needle prick her skin, before the girl's muscles relaxed and she exhaled calmly.

"You've found a cure!" Thomas exclaimed, shocked, but she shook her head.

"That's the problem with this. She'll always need more." She stood up.

"But that didn't stop WCKD. They'd sacrifice whole generations until there was no one left." Thomas fell silent.

"I have to say I was surprised when they put you and Evelyn into the maze. I thought they were going to kill you after what you did."

"What I did?" Thomas asked. Evie's body tensed even more.

"The first time I spoke to you. Evelyn told me how hard it was for her to see her friends die. How they were put into the maze." Evie closed her eyes as the woman looked over at her.

"The last time I spoke to you, you gave me the coordinates of all the WICKED centers and facilities. Without you, none of this would have been possible." Evie's heart was racing.

"It wasn't me," said Thomas.

"Evie did it. She gave me the coordinates." He said and silence fell between them.

"She paid a high price.. but a worthy one." Evie could feel the woman's burning gaze on her body.

"Without these coordinates, we would have never come to the point where we are now."
Thomas, Mary and Jorge then left the tent and continued to talk outside.

Evie propped herself up and looked at the boy beside her. She squeezed Newt's hand and he opened his fawn eyes. When he saw Evie being awake, he straightened up hastily.

"You're awake." He murmured.

"What happened?" She asked.

"You fell over, why didn't you say you weren't feeling good?" He looked at her sternly.

"Oh Newt wait a minute I think I'm going to collapse, can you catch me when I fall?" Evie mimicked with a dramatic expression. Newt looked at her in disbelief and then looked down.

"You're unbelievable." he said.
Evie ran the hand that wasn't being held tightly by Newt over her face. Her skin was dry and she must have terrible dark circles under her eyes.

"They thought you had the flare, but you got away." the boy said. Evie didn't know what to answer, so she nodded.

"Is this the right arm?" she then asked. Newt nodded.

"We're safe here for now. This Vince told us." he breathed. They looked at each other for a while.
Newt's fingers made small circular movements on Evie's skin and his eyes seemed to hypnotize her. Then he suddenly cleared his throat.

"You should rest." he said and tried to get up.

"Stay." She mumbled. Newt turned around.

"Please." Evie added. A smirk crept onto the boys lips, when he approached her.

Evie would have expected him to sit back down, but instead he decided to lay with her. He wrapped his arms around her body and pulled her close.
He gave her a kiss on the top of her hair.
Evie savored his warmth as her eyes slid shut.

"Newt?" Evie saw the young boy before her.
"Do you trust all this?" She heard herself ask. Newt's gaze turned to Evie. His face was young. He must have been 13.
"We trust you and Thomas." He replied.
"You?" he then asked.
"Of course I do." She answered.
"You sure?" Newt asked, his brown eyes boring into hers.
"They're up to something, right?" he then asked.
"YOU are up to something. We know that, we're not stupid." He looked at her. Evie remained silent.
"Newt-..."
"You know why people are disappearing. Every month, you know it! I can see it in your eyes!" He said, standing up. Evie felt herself backing away from him.
"You're hiding something! You should be on our side. What's holding you back?"
"I'm not hiding-"
"Don't lie!" The boy yelled angrily.

Evies vision swam when she saw a screen of a computer in front of her.

She saw the glade and the gates of the maze. She saw two figures, one of them with the blond hair and slim body of Newt. The other one none other than Minho.
Newt walked into the maze with Minho and they split up as always. Evie remembered thinking that Newt took the wrong way as he usually did. He looked up, keeping an eye out for the walls. Evie leaned forward and furrowed her brow. Newt stopped in front of a specific wall, then grabbed one of the ivy vines to climb on it.

Evie heard herself scream.

"Evie?" Thomas approached her.

"AVA PAIGE!" The girl screamed hysterically.

"What's the-" Thomas looked at the monitor, a pool of blood could be seen and a boy in the middle of it.
Blond, his leg strangely disfigured.
