"I'M NOT GONNA MAKE IT." WINSTON
said, breathing heavily. Then he pointed to the gun that frypan was holding.
"Please- don't let me become one of those things." he said, begging. Frypan looked at the weapon in his hand and then back at Winston.
Evie could understand him not wanting to have his friend's blood on his hands.
But the girl didn't want Winston to become one of those cranks either. She didn't want him to continue to suffer like this.
Newt seemed like he wanted to make this decision for them and took the gun from frypans hand.
"Wait- Newt." Thomas said quietly, but Newt ignored him. Evie walked up to the blond and held his hand with the gun. He looked first at their hands and then at the girl. She looked him sternly in the eye.
"I know what I'm doing.. trust me!" Newt whispered and she let go of him rather reluctantly.
Would he really do that? Would he shoot his friend?
Newt walked up to Winston and, to Evie's surprise, knelt down. He took Winston's hand and placed it with the gun on Winston's chest.
"Thank you." Winston said weakly and tears gathered in Evie's eyes. Slowly, the first one rolled down her cheek.
They would just leave him here? He would just kill himself?
"Now.. get out of here." said Winston.
"Goodbye Winston." Newt whispered, getting up and leaving. Evie also walked forward to Winston.
She took the empty hand and held it in hers.
"I'm sorry." it was just a hint of her voice, but Winston understood.
The boy nodded, then she got up and followed Newt.
When Evie caught up with him, she took his hand. He looked at her as Evie's heart shattered.
For the first time, she saw tears in Newt's eyes. He looked away, his features hard.
Evie squeezed his hand.
"It's going to be okay." she said. Newt kept his expression and the girl put her arms around him, to pull him into a side hug.
She stroked his back gently, when they heard the gunshot and stopped in their tracks.
Evie flinched in Newt's arms and laid her head in the crook of his neck. She then felt him hug her back. They all mourned Winston for the last time.
Evie regretted not knowing anything about the boy.
She only remembered the day of her trial week when she had to help him slice up a pig. He laughed at her when she looked so disgusted by all the things she had to see on these tables in the hut. She had went pale at the sight of organs and the mass of blood and swore to herself that she would never eat meat again.
"Who are we-.. what world are we living in, that our friend.." she didn't dare to finish the sentence as she sobbed into Newt's shoulder. Newt said nothing, but he understood.
Maybe that's why he gave Winston the gun.
Because he was at that point himself, and knew what it felt like.

Thomas looked at his sister, letting the images flow through his mind again and again. Her childlike face in the little pink dress. He remembered being happy and holding her hand.
Now he looked at Evie and saw the smile of his memories being washed off her face. She was staring into the fire, looking completely devastated. It broke his heart to see her like that.
He thought of the scene where she had put something in his hand. He remembered that she had disappeared afterwards, presumably into the maze.
He looked at the blonde girl, wanting so badly to tell her everything. He wanted to know what she thought about him now, what she felt about the fact that they were siblings, what she remembered about their childhood and time before the maze, but he kept quiet. The words wouldn't leave his mouth when all he did was staring into the fire.
"I thought we were supposed to be immune?" Minho said. It was the first time anyone had spoken since Winston's death. The attention was immediately on him.
"Not all of us.. it seems like." Teresa replied from beside Newt.
"If Winston got infected, we should assume that applies to all of us." he said, looking back into the fire.
"I never thought I'd say this.." Frypan spoke up, a little tear running down his face.
"But I miss the glade." He said and looked down to his ends. Evie believed that Frypan was the person who felt things the strongest. Winston was one of his very close friends. Both were keepers in the glade so they probably had worked together a lot.
Thomas stood up suddenly, feeling Evie's confused look on him as he walked a little further away and sat down behind a rock.
Evie looked at Newt again. He also stood up and followed Thomas.
She thought about frypan's words.
If she was in the glade now, she would lie in her hammock or in Newt's room.
She grinned slightly at the thought.
In the glade, Chuck would try to wake her up because, once again, she had slept in.
She would eat Fry's horrible stew, which wasn't even that bad. They all just said that to tease him.
She'd work in the medic hut with Clint and Jeff being silly, complain to Newt that she wasn't allowed to be a runner, and then get mad at Jeff again because Newt was not allowing her to be a runner.
But Jeff was dead. Clint was dead and Chuck was dead. They were all dead and now Winston had joined their team.
—
The next night they found no shelter, so they slept under the open sky. Evie couldn't really sleep and instead was watching Newt's back in front of her. The way his shoulders rose and fell with his breathing.
She was thinking about the events in the maze when tiredness caught up with her.
—
She saw white walls in front of her and a white door flew open.
"Your little attempt to betray us has failed." A male voice said, as people entered the room. Evie felt the urge to stand up and run away but her body wouldn't move.
"Evelyn." What she heard was Ava Paige's voice. It sounded, motherly, caring and soft.
Evie looked up into the woman's icy blue eyes.
"Why did you do that Evelyn?" The girl looked at her hands in front of her. She seemed to be avoiding Paige's gaze.
"After all this time. All the trust, all the imposition I have put in you." Paige's eyes were now so cold, so full of disappointment.
—
"Hey. Wake up. Newt get up." Thomas said to them, which ripped Evie out of her sleep. She looked at the brunette with irritation and then her heart was racing when she remembered the dream.
That was the lost piece of the puzzle. The part she didn't remember, the little detail that had been on the tip of her tongue the whole time.
She had betrayed WCKD.
They must have changed her memory or something when she had been passed out.
She k ew that information in the maze and then it got removed by WCKD.
Did they want her to think that WCKD was still good?
"Fry, Minho, Aris, Evie. Get up I see something there." Evie sat up and had to realize where they were.
A few hundred meters ahead of them, were some lights burning in a building. Evie flinched as there then was a huge rumble of thunder behind them. She turned around and saw lightning strike the ground not that far away.
"Okay, let's go. We have to go." Thomas said and urged the group to start running. The clouds glowed with lightning.
"Come on, let's go!" Thomas called again and grabbed Evie's hand. They ran off quickly, the lightning coming closer and closer behind them.
Loud thunder echoed in Evie's ears and adrenaline coursed through her body. They were getting closer and closer to the huge building.
Suddenly, a bolt of lightning struck close behind them. The bright light stung Evie's eyes and the girl was knocked forward, just like Thomas. She felt the enormous heat on her back and then her body hitting the hard ground. Everything around her was spinning and all she heard was a beeping in her ear when she lifted her head to see Minho lying on the ground. Smoke came from his body.
"MINHO!"
