THOMAS LOOKED AT HIS TREMBLING hands and felt sweat running down his temple. He hurried through the corridors, trying to calm his racing heart down, so that his brain could finally start thinking clearly. The neurons in his head didn't give him a second to calm down as all sorts of thoughts were sent through his brain cells like little electric shocks.

"Thomas." He heard the soft voice of Ava Paige. The boy saw the blonde woman standing in front of a glass window, which offered a sight inside the labs. He slowly walked towards her, his steps calculated and came to a halt next to the woman.

"Are you all right, Thomas?" Ava asked, putting a hand around his shoulder.
The boy took his time before answering her.

"I don't know." he replied, the trembling in his voice clearly audible although he tried hard to suppress it. Ava nodded in understanding.

"It's painful to do the right thing, isn't it? The burden of righteousness lies on the shoulders of the people that try to change to world for a better." Thomas didn't answer her.

"Thomas." She said again, her voice tender, her eyes locked into his.

"WCKD is good." She said the infamous words she used in all of her speeches and debates.
Ava Paige moved the hand on his shoulder to his upper arm.

"This is the best that can be done for her." Ava said, when she nodded to the window they were standing at and Thomas now ventured a look inside the lab.
His breath caught when he saw a specific girl's blonde hair.
Evie.
Her eyes were gently closed and her body was covered up to her neck. Her arm laid on a table next to her and was connected to all the equipment the doctors needed.

"What's happening to her?" Thomas asked, although he already knew the answer.

"We're sending her in."
