THE WIND was stronger than ever in daejeon. the air was filled with thick winds, children laughing as they played, and the smell of smoke outside of nahyun's apartment.

today was already a dreadful day for nahyun as she just came back from being fired from her job that hardly ever paid, and now she has to come home to cry and cry another four hours later.

nahyun dragged herself up the apartment's steps as today was exhausting. when nahyun made it to her door she could see her cat milo waiting outside of it.

"milo what are you doing here-" nahyun began to speak soon noticing the eviction notice on her door. oh my nahyun whined as she kneeled down to the floor.

she sat on the hard ground as she put her knees to her chest sobbing silently as milo nudged her with his head. nahyun sat up as she brought milo into her arms as she wiped away her tears.

collecting herself, nahyun stormed off to her landlords office to beg him to have mercy on her until he gives in.

nahyun stopped at the door to figure out what to say to. before she could the door flung open, revealing her landlord, mr. cho who seemed to be leaving.

"mr. cho may i please take up some of your time?" nahyun politely asked as she slowly broke down inside. mr. cho groaned lazily taking off his coat that he just put on as he gestured for nahyun to come into his office.

he went behind his desk to sit at his chair as he hurriedly signaled nahyun to sit down. nahyun placed milo in the corner of the office then taking a seat in front of mr. cho.

the man fixed himself a coffee before telling nahyun to speak. "mr. cho, i see that i've been evicted but if you could please let me slide-" before nahyun could finish her sentence mr. cho cut her off.

"no nahyun, you don't pay rent you get kicked out!" the older man said emphasizing the you. nahyun ran her fingers through her short black hair as she began to think.

"please mr. cho, i got fired from my job today and i would make like a dollar every three hours!" nahyun pleaded.

mr. cho quietly laughed almost as if he was some sort of villain. "nahyun, nahyun, nahyun....you wonder why you're ms. crippling in debt." mr. cho mumbled, nahyun taking offense to the last part.

"you could've paid half but no, you decided to be dumb and harass me to come complain about something you could've avoided!" mr. cho spat getting closer to nahyun.

he leaned backwards manically laughing once again. "now bye bye, have fun doing magic tricks in the streets for five dollars!" mr. cho barked.

the door was slammed in front of nahyun and her cat milo's faces. nahyun huffed, stepping down the steps of the office she was recently in.

the day couldn't get any worse for her, she was in major trouble and she knew it. with nahyun now being unemployed it would be a struggle to get the money she needs to pay.

two years ago nahyun lost her home due to financial problems, last year nahyun lost her car which caused her to be late for work due to the sucky buses, and now nahyun is losing her apartment and job.

she isn't a kid no more, word to frank. so, she can't depend on her mommy's money to get what she needs. especially with nahyun knowing that her mother doesn't have much in her pockets neither.

nahyun settled on a bench in the subway as she scrolled through her phone looking up cheap and nearby motels. though, there weren't many cheap options.

nahyun sighed as she ran her fingers through the soft fur of her tabby cat. beginning to sit up from where she was, nahyun was stopped by a slim male in a tuxedo.

the short girl furrowed her brow. the man put his hand out to nahyun to shake hers, nahyun shook her head as she tried to walk away.

but, the older man grabbed nahyun by her shoulder as he began to speak. "if i could take up some of your time real quick, how would you like to play a game for one hundred-thousand won?" the man in the suit asked, almost as if he was some sort of host for a game show.

nahyun's face lit up at the man's question. nodding, the man opened the briefcase that was once behind his back revealing a red and blue folded card and stacks of cash.

nahyun examined the inside of the case as a smile crept up on her face. "wait, before i play, what even are we playing and who are you?" nahyun questioned the suspicious situation.

the man chuckled standing up from his previous position as he held up the cards with a toothy smile plastered on his face. "yes, how rude of me, my name is yang seojun." he put his out once again, this time nahyun shook it.

"you and i will be playing a game of ddakji, okay?" he tilted his head with a blank expression. nahyun slowly nodded her head.

seojun explained nahyun the rules as she listened closely, "pick a card." seojun flashed two cards to nahyun, picking the blue card, the male handed the card to her.

"you go first." seojun grinned, making the game of ddakji begin.

nahyun picked herself up from the dirty floors of the subway, her face had been bruised from the slaps of yang seojun in the unfair game of ddakji.

the young girl took a deep breath scanning the red card that lied on the ground, then eying her own blue card.

seojun watched as it was nahyun's turn with his hands in his pocket, a sinister smile on his face.

nahyun raised her hand up getting in the position to throw the card down.

using all her force, nahyun released the card from her hand.

finally, her card flipped over yang seojun's card.

nahyun's face lit up with happiness, still trying to get over the pain. "okay, now give me the one hundred-thousand and even an extra thousand due to those unnecessary slaps!" nahyun cheered, holding the left side of her face.

seojun kneeled down to his silver briefcase taking out the one hundred-thousand won before reaching into his back pants pocket.

in his back pocket he pulled out an brown cardboard type card, holding up both of things. "take the one hundred-thousand won and, if you want to play for more, call this number and play a game for even more. it's your choice." seojun smiled widely.

nahyun scratched the back of her neck, taking the brown card from seojun's fingers. he smirked, collecting his things putting it back into the briefcase as he locked it.

with a light wave, seojun walked off almost disappearing in the darkness of the subway.

though nahyun had a bruised face she grinned, not sure of what these said games are she was willing to play.

that day when nahyun had called the card she began to feel unsure even though before she seemed so excited.

now, the feeling was different. the girl waited on the side of the street where she was instructed, waiting, and waiting.

a van pulled up in front of her, nahyun checked her surroundings, uneasy. she was pulled into the van, it's doors closing and driving off.

somewhere.

𝗻𝗼𝘃𝗶𝗮 𝗻𝗼𝘁𝗲𝘀 𖦹

chapter one is out ! i hope you guys enjoyed this chapter and this little introduction to nahyun.

this chapter kind of sucks, ngl. i hate writing first chapter so much ! remember the book is basically based off of the show and doesn't have the real cast and some of the plot.

next chapter will most likely be the introduction to squid game and the other players or maybe an introduction to yoona ❪ maybe chapter three ❫

make sure to vote, comment, and enjoy ! this chapter is proofread but may not be perfect
