"Mutation: it is the key to our evolution. It has enabled us to evolve into the dominant species on the planet. This process normally takes thousands and thousands of years. But every few hundred millennia, evolution leaps forward."

Ida examined her reflection in the smudged mirror, using the basin below to support her weight as she splashed her face with water, trying to calm her nerves. Her skin was ghostly pale and shallow, reflecting the turmoil going on inside.

' It should have never come to this.'

' I should have never had to fight Erik, and Charles, God, Charles, he should have never found out I was back. It would have been easier if I stayed away.'

Cuba shouldn't have happened, the CIA, all these things should have never happened, and most of all; Ida should have never returned to Xavier Mansion.

Splashing her face one more time, Ida grabbed the hand towel beside her, wiping her appearance of the cold liquid. She fixed her clothes, smoothing out her dress, not making a difference as it was covered in dust and soot from the battle. Tears threatened to fall, but Ida roughly wiped them away, keeping a strong frame and mind. She was ready to see Charles, possibly for the last time.

Ida opened the bathroom door and was greeted by Logan who was waiting to escort her to the Professor's study. Wearing a very fake smile, Ida followed Logan down the corridor, but stopped in front of the large oak doors; too many memories haunting her mind.

One month earlier:

Ida blended seamlessly into the crowd at the auditorium, just like the rest of the mutants around her, listening adamantly to Dr Jean Gray and Senator Kelly's debate on public welfare against mutants.

"A girl in Illinois walks through walls. What's to stop her from walking into a bank vault? Or into the White House? Or into your houses? And there are even rumours of mutants so powerful that they can enter our minds and control our thoughts, taking away our God-given free will. The American people should be deserving of the right to decide whether or not they want their children to be in school with these mutants."

The people around her rallied their support to the Senator, screaming and shouting' "Round Up The Mutants!", Dr Gray's speech well forgotten.

Fixing her hat and coat, she shimmied her way through the crowd, trying to leave as fast as possible to avoid confrontation with the raging audience. She wasn't the only one leaving the debate, no, she could recognise that cloak anywhere. But what was he doing here?

Testing her prediction, she followed the man out, hiding behind one of the support pillars. He was talking to another man, though his broad stature covered the scene, making it unclear as to whom. Ida could barely make out their speech, over the shouting next door.

"What are you doing here?"

"Why do you ask questions to which
you already know the answers?"

"Don't give up on them, Erik."

"What would you have me do, Charles?"

Charles. That name made her freeze on the spot, all the hurt and guilt resurfacing. Ida couldn't bear it any more, leaving her hiding spot and hurrying out of the facility, ignoring the rest of the discussion, and the water droplets covering her eyelashes.

"l will bring you hope, old friend. And l ask only one thing in return. Don't get in my way."

Of course, Ida had heard the reports of the new 'Brotherhood of Mutants', but never would she have thought Erik was behind it. And Charles, was he in it too? after everything, they fought for in Cuba?

' No I'm not going there, not again' Ida thought, wiping the tears of anger from her eyes.

Thus, she rejected the thought from her mind, hopping into a cab. But she made one dreadful mistake and looked back, locking eyes with none other than Erik Lehnsherr.

Train rides seemed like a daily occurrence for Ida now, always having to move, not staying in any town for longer than a week. Still, they provided Ida with a change of scenery, giving her time to dwell in her emotions.

Sitting alone, as usual, she focused on the people at the platform, the young children playing, adults rushing here, there and everywhere. So lost in the ambience around her, Ida jumped slightly when a man and a young girl sat in the two seats before her. They spoke in whispers, the older man seemed agitated but Ida could make out their conversation, eyes widening as she realised the topic.

"There's not many people that'll understand what you're going through. But l think this guy Xavier's one of them."

Xavier. Her breath hitched when they spoke it. Everywhere she goes, his name still seems to follow her around.

The train started to move, departing from the station when it stopped again. Three hooded figures entered the carriage and Ida knew exactly who they were.

" Hide. Both of you. Now" she tried to warn the man and girl but it was too late; Erik had already spotted the girl's red hood.

"You must be Wolverine. That remarkable metal doesn't run through your entire body, does it?" Erik raised his hand, the metal mutation allowing for control over Wolverine's movements.

"Stop! Stop it!" the girl shouted getting up from her seat, but Ida quickly pulled her back down.

" It's no use trying to hide Ida, your outnumbered" Erik turned away from Logan, his hand still raised but now directing his speech to Ida.

" I would have no reason to hide if you would let these poor people go Erik" Ida stood up from her seat, using her own mutation to create a barrier between her and Erik, stepping into the aisle.

" What do you want with these people Erik? What have they done to you?" Ida reasoned with him, standing protectively in front of the girl, who she now knew as Marie/Rogue.

"It would give me no pleasure to kill all these passengers right now. No, I have a different motivation. I need her, " With one arm still raised, he pointed to the girl, hidden behind Ida, " and you just happen to be in my way" he tried to use his magnetic energy to push her aside, but Ida's barrier blocked the mutation.

The Wolverine was long since knocked out because one of Erik's supporters tranquilised him with a nerve agent. Ida was up, 1 to 3, not knowing what Marie's mutation could do.

While she was distracted, another person from Erik's band of mutants, shot a tranquillizer dart at Marie, knocking her out and also gaining Ida's attention, dropping her shield to save the girl. Coming up behind her, Erik grabbed Ida by the shoulders and knocked her out as well, successfully rendering them all immobile.

"Leave the man and girl here. I've gotten what I wanted."

Ida woke up with a pounding headache. Her vision was blurred but she could at least make out where she was. It seemed like the statue of liberty? She tried to move, but her hands were bound with chains, and legs too weak to stand.

"Magnificent, isn't she?"

"I've seen it before." Ida replied monotonically, raising her head to see her captor.

"l first saw her in 1949. America was going to be the land of tolerance. The land of peace."

"If you're not going to kill me, Erik, what on earth are you here to do?"

"Get Revenge" Erik stared out the window, not phased at all on what he was about to do.

"Why?"

"Because there is no land of tolerance. There is no peace, not here or anywhere else. Whole families destroyed simply because they were born different from those in power. Well, after tonight, the world's power will be just like us. They will return home as brothers. As mutants. Our cause will be theirs." he came closer to her, brushing the hair out of her face, holding it in place when she tried to move away.

"Your sacrifice will mean our survival. I understand if that comes as a small consolation."

"Put her in the machine." Two guards unchained her and brought her up to a machine, the same machine Ida remembered seeing Sabastian Shaw use many years previously.

Up in the machine, rings of energy circled around Ida, getting brighter each time they completed a rotation.

"You don't have to do this Erik, no one will think any less of you" Ida pleaded with Erik, but to no avail he placed his hands on hers, transferring his energy to her, where she could manipulate it and amplify it all across New York.

" They leave me no choice"

The power being emitted was so strong, Ida had to fight vigorously to stay in control. Her eyes grew heavy, and the last thing she remembered was Erik falling to the ground, the Wolverine behind him before the world seemed to go dark.

Present-day:

" You ok?"

Ida snapped out of her thoughts, noticing the look of compassion Logan was giving her.

"Ready as I'll ever be" She tried to calm her nerves as Logan opened the doors for her, but the minute she saw him by the window, her calming strategies made no difference.

" Hello Ida"

" Hello Charlie"

A faint smile made its way to Charles's face when she used his old nickname. A name reserved just for her. To get a better look at her, he wheeled from under the desk, giving Ida the shock of her life, seeing Charles for the first time in a wheelchair.

She dropped to her knees, holding onto Logan's hand for support as she tried to fight back the tears.

"They never told me what happened after Cuba" Ida trembled, her head in her hands until soft hands lifted her head up gently, to see Charles, looking as handsome as ever, such sympathy and regret in his eyes.

"You left" he started off softly, " there was nothing more to say" he nodded to Logan, gesturing to him that his services were no longer required.

" I know and I'm so sorry for putting you through that, I should have never left after the battle." All previous thoughts of leaving were long gone, just by seeing Charles again and remembering all the times of joy they shared together.

She cried some more and they laughed as well, but this time it came much easier with Charles holding her tightly, not willing to lose her again.

That day, Ida promised herself no more running, because frankly, Charles gave her more than any man had ever before.

Love and a family.
