Personality

Maynard is quiet and serious, keeping to himself at most times. A quick thinker who values rationality and logic above emotional impulse, most people find Maynard slightly difficult and intimidating, especially with his reputation as a ruthless warlord. Insanely calm in the midst of chaos, Maynard never seems fazed by even the most gruesome of sights and news. He comes off as stand-offish to most, and the very first thing he does when meeting new people is size them up and locate any possible weapons and weak spots. 

Maynard is cynical and extremely distrustful of everyone, his suspicious nature only spiking upward after the assassination of his mother, Queen Minerva Moonstone. Even though the whole event was hushed and covered up, passed off as a suicide caused by post-partum depression from her lastborn, Maynard doesn't buy it, becoming tight-lipped and irate whenever he hears the story being passed around. The only person the prince is truly comfortable around is his youngest sister, Marya, whom he is ferociously protective of. He is the first to come to the little girl's defence whenever she is blamed for the Queen's death, and will often lash out violently while doing so.

Maynard finds it difficult to sympathise and understand people and is often uncomfortable and awkward when involved in emotionally charged moments, especially with his own family. Preferring to brood and reflect upon his emotions while all alone over a steaming cup of coffee, Maynard rarely shares his personal views or opinions with anyone, finding the idea absurd and almost silly. He's very uncomfortable around emotional people, and god forbid he has to comfort anyone (which he is inevitably forced to do almost every day, courtesy of Marya). 

Maynard finds physical affection nerve-wracking, his discomfort owing to his ingrained suspicion of people. However, Maynard has his good side too. He's courteous and polite to everyone in his good graces and is always spoiling his youngest sister with souvenirs from all the places he's travelled to and other gifts. He maintains a cordial relationship with his brothers and is idolised by his younger brother, Micah. 

Maynard loves to travel and discover new lands and is always expanding his father's kingdom, and has no problem involving himself in battles for new territory, being only one of four princes available to take the throne. He also likes to spend his free time learning new languages, reading poetry, and taking nighttime strolls in the palace gardens. He can mostly be found in the palace library, brooding over maps and battle plans, books and old scriptures, or patiently teaching a frustrated Marya to play chess.

Background

Born and raised in the kingdom of Corvus, named for its usage of crows as messenger birds and their significance in its history, Maynard was taught from a young age to be vigilant. The kingdom, known for its constant assassination attempts on the royal family by a secret society that calls itself the Umbra League, exists in constant fear and turbulence, and rulers are forced to procure as many heirs as possible. 

Maynard, being the thirdborn son, is such a heir, and is expected to live in a constant state of caution. His travels and conquests of war are looked down upon by his father, but Alastair Moonstone does nothing more to stop his thirdborn than feed him disgruntled comments and remarks, which Maynard happily ignores. The King doesn't bother too much about his third son's wander and war lust, mostly because he has three other sons and a baby on the way from his second wife, Camilla.

Maynard's childhood was quite uneventful, apart from the pressure of being compared to his older brothers, Madison and Alexander, and living up to his father's expectations. The first big shock of his life came with his mother's sudden and unexpected death, when he was sixteen years old. Minerva had given birth to her last child only a few weeks prior, and all had been well with the mother and baby, so no one had expected the tragic loss. 

Shaken thouroughly by his mother's death, Maynard became distant and unstable, taking out his grief and rage in leading Corvus's armies in battle against the neighbouring kingdom, Nightborne. This was his first big victory in expanding his kingdom's territory and bringing down possible enemies, and there was no stopping him thereafter. 

Till present day, Maynard continues to conquer several lands, and because of his ruthless seizures of power, many kingdoms have offered peace and amity to Corvus, becoming its allies and trading partners. And despite all of this, the Moonstone family lives in a constant state of dread, as the Umbra League, despite laying low for quite some time after Queen Minerva's death, is rumoured to be expanding its forces and conspiring with multiple territories to overthrow Corvus and kill all the members of the Moonstone bloodline. And it is very likely that Maynard may be their next target.

Maynard is tall and muscular, with dark, silky hair swept over hawk-like yellow eyes, the only one among his siblings without the iconic blue-green gaze of the Moonstone family, the strange colour only emphasized by his dark kohl. Preferring armour to a crown, Maynard always wears protective gear underneath his clothing, his look always completed by his long, double-edged sword, Bane, hanging from his belt. Many find him quite intimidating.
