MAYLA SET HER PEN down and rubbed her temples, trying to fight off a migraine.
Someone knocked on the door.
"Come in."
She looked up when the door creaked open.
"Carlisle," she breathed. She stood up, revealing a white hoop-skirt dress. The corset was tight, and the sleeves - a string of red, pink, and white flowers - were off the shoulder. Along the top and bottom of the skirt were the same colored flowers - just with a few purple. The waistline was surrounded by glitter that faded into the skirt and bodice.
"It is lovely to see you again, Carlisle," she walked forward and hugged the male tightly.
"How have you been?" Carlisle asked. "How's your head? And gift?" Carlisle pulled back.
Mayla laughed. "I'm fine." She sat back down at her desk and picked up the pen before filling out a few sheets quickly. She then signed the paper before stamping it with the Volturi's crest and adding it to a vanilla folder.
"Carlisle," Mayla said, signing another paper. "Why'd you come? I know it wasn't just to check on my head."
Carlisle smiled softly. "I've missed you, Mayla."
Mayla smiled as she stamped a paper before pulling out another vanilla folder and placing the paper inside gently.
"If you miss me so much, why don't you visit more often?" Mayla asked softly. She stood up and walked to her bed.
"I... don't know," Carlisle admitted softly.
Mayla sat on her bed and smiled at the blonde in front of her. "Well, it's a pity."
Mayla patted the spot next to her on the bed. Carlisle sat next to her.
The two sat for hours just talking and enjoying each other's company.
Mayla eventually dozed off which confused the doctor. Why was she able to sleep if she's a vampire?
Maylamoved herself closer to Carlisle in her sleep. Her head now rested on his chest.
Carlisle watched as she breathed deeply in and out. In and out. In and out.
They stayed like that for a long while before Mayla jerked up, gasping loudly. Her chest heaved under the control of anxiety for a few minutes before her breath showed.
She looked back at Carlisle and smiled sheepishly. "I'm sorry."
"You have nothing to apologize for," Carlisle said.
Mayla stood up and walked over to her desk. She pulled out a wine bottle filled with animal blood.
She poured a glass - which was also in her desk - and handed it to Carlisle.
She sat in her chair and pulled out a different wine bottle and glass before she filled the glass with human blood.
Carlisle eyed her glass skeptically.
"Relax. It's from donations to a hospital," Mayla reassured him.
Carlisle nodded and took a sip from his glass - knowing it was animal.
"Where's you get animal blood from?" Carlisle asked.
Mayla smiled as she continued to work on the large pile of papers on her desk.
"Renesmee wanted to stay on the animal blood diet. So, one of the guard goes out once a month and I drain the blood into the wine bottles."
Carlisle nodded and sat in the chair in front of her desk.
"When do you plan on returning?" Mayla asked.
"I have a scheduled flight for tonight," Carlisle said softly. Mayla nodded. "How's Esme?"
Carlisle nodded and set his glass down. "She's good. She wants you back."
Mayla smiled and took another sip from her glass.
They sat in silence for a while - the only sound being the sound of the papers as Mayla finished up her paperwork.
When she had finished, Mayla stood and walked over to her walk-in closet.
"Hey, Carlisle?" Mayla turned forward to him.
"Hmm?" Carlisle hummed.
"Can you help me untie this?"
Carlisle nodded and walked over to her before he slowly started to untie her corset.
"I usually get Renesmee or Jane to help me with this," Mayla said softly. Carlisle smiled gently and continued to untie the corset.
He finally finished and Mayla caught the corset. She held it up and turned around. Mayla kissed Carlisle gently before he lost the shred of self-control he had and pulled her closer.

THE TWO LAY on Mayla's bed, side by side, the only thing covering them being the sheets on Mayla's bed.
Carlisle began slowly kissing her neck.
"We can't," Mayla murdered as she tried to push him away.
"But, Mayla," he wined. Mayla laughed. "You're married. No buts."
She laughed as he nuzzled his head in her neck. "Just five more minutes."
She sighed as she ran her hand through his hair. "Okay."
He sighed happily.
They lay in silence for a handful of minutes before Mayla spoke up, "You need to go. You'll miss your flight."
Carlisle shook his head.
Mayla sighed and stood up. She grabbed a blanket and wrapped it around herself before walking to her closet to put on the same white dress as before.
"Hey, Carlisle?" Mayla hollered, holding the corset to her body.
Carlisle walked in a moment later, fully dressed in the clothes he wore earlier.
"Can you help me tie this?" Mayla questioned.
Carlisle nodded and began tying the back of the corset.
They stood in silence until the doctor was done.
Mayla frowned as she put on layer after layer of the skirt.
"What'll Esme do?"
Carlisle shrugged.
"May I come with you?" Mayla asked. Carlisle nodded.

ESME RAN FORWARD and hugged Mayla. "It's so good to see you."
Mayla nodded. "You as well."
Alice walked into the room and looked at Mayla. Alice frowned and shook her head.
Mayla swallowed hard.
"Esme," Rosalie called from the bottom step. Her face was serious. She knew.
Esme turned to look at the blonde.
"Carlisle cheated on you with Mayla," Rosalie said softly. "I'm sorry."
Esme turned to look at Carlisle, her eyes watering. "Is it true?"
Carlisle nodded. "Esme-"
Esme turned around and sped out of the house.
Carlisle started to his wife, but Mayla stopped him. "I'll talk to her."
Mayla followed Esme's scent. It lead her to a clearing with Esme sitting on a large rock within the clearing.
Mayla slowly walked up to Esme.
"Hey," Mayla said softly. Esme didn't say anything. Mayla sat next to the brunette.
"I'm sorry," Mayla whispered. Esme looked up at Esme, hurt clearly shown within her eyes.
"Why?" Esme asked after a moment of silence.
Mayla gave Esme an empathetic smile. "Believe it or not, I was in the same situation as you were once.
"My first husband cheated on me multiple women in our first year of marriage. But I had a daughter of whom he had adopted, so I could not leave.
"But the difference between my situation and yours was it's not Carlisle's fault. My husband had a choice, Carlisle didn't. He loves you, Esme. He really, really loves you."
"Then why'd he cheat?" Esme asked. Mayla smiled softly and whispered something in Esme's ear.

MAYLA WALKED into the house with Esme following.
Carlisle and Esme went to their room to talk and Mayla sat down on the couch.
Her mind wandered to the letter Esme had sent to her a few months back.
Lailah.
The spirits began screaming in her mind. She became dizzy and her head was pounding, causing her to rest her head in her hands.
The spirits began whispering and her nose started to bleed.
Meanwhile, upstairs Edward clutched his head in pain as he heard the spirits in Mayla's head.
"Edward, what's wrong?" Bella asked.
Edward shook his head.
The two jumped as they heard Mayla scream from downstairs.
Carlisle and Esme ran downstairs when they heard her scream.
"Mayla, honey, what's wrong?" Esme asked, crouching in front of the dirty-blonde.
Mayla looked up at Esme, her eyes in pain, tears streaming down her face like raindrops falling from Heaven.
Esme sat down next to the girl, and Mayla leaned against Esme, holding the woman as if she was the only thing keeping her there.
Esme held the girl as she cried. She looked at Carlisle and gestured for him to come closer.
When he complied, Esme said, "Maybe we should take her back to Volterra."
Carlisle nodded in agreement.
