Chapter 2: Worth

It was the first hour of Patrol and Y/N was tagging alongside Aizawa who seemed less than interested in speaking to you. He hadn't noticed that Y/N's outfit had padding on certain parts of the body, the knees, elbows, shoulders, and so on. He hadn't even noticed the smaller weapons they carried with them, which was already something that they had a small issue with. The night itself was boring, the air grew cold quickly.

Taking a small break to sit down, Aizawa turned his head at the sudden sound of an explosion nearby. He groaned before standing up, gesturing for Y/N to follow. The two ran around a corner and saw brightness in the distance. Fire and smoke, but the building seemed to be some random one that didn't have any major significance. Y/N couldn't help but feel suspicious about it but wasn't given time to think as they chased after Aizawa to confront the villains. There were two: a man with different coloured skin seemingly held with staples, and another villain whom neither Y/N nor Aizawa recognized. Aizawa gestured for him to stand aside, still doubting the capacity of Y/N's healing quirk in battle. Frustrated as Aizawa ran into battle, Y/N turned your attention to the burning building. He ran headfirst into the building, listening for any screaming. He could only hear one person on the upper floor and decided to test his fate. He turned and darted towards the stairs, dodging a falling beam. The stairs creaked unsteadily as the fire began to eat away at the foundations. He burst into the passageway, his head becoming heavy and his chest tight with smoke and heat. He listened for the same sound, and heard it from a distant room, running forward and kicking the door down. He turned around the room, seeing no one but setting his eyes on a small radio that played crying sounds.

"Shit," he said, noticing the small fuses that ran through the room and realizing that he was correct in his suspicions.

----

Aizawa wasn't faring too well on his end. His eyes had become drier by the minute, the heat from the fire posing issues. His best bet was his scarf and trying to immobilize the villains. Suddenly, an explosion sounded in the building. He realized that Y/N wasn't nearby and began to panic, realizing what could've happened. Dabi, as the villain was known, took advantage of the distraction and launched a fist at Aizawa, connecting with the Hero's jaw and sending him stumbling back, his scarf losing its tension.

---

It was plain luck that let Y/N find the fire escape in the back of the building and use that as a means to get out. It was plain misfortune that he got hit with a bit of the debris, knocking him off balance. He ran down the alleyway, still stumbling occasionally, before he saw the Hero stumble backwards, holding his jaw. The scarf he wore was slackening. Y/N stood close to the wall, but noticed a small piece of debris. It wasn't much-a small bit of concrete on a metal bar that must've fallen in the explosion.

"Didn't help much if half the damn house was made of wood," Y/N sneered. Suddenly, Dabi came into view, chuckling to himself as he began to light a blue flame. Y/N picked up the concrete by the metal bar and began to run forward.

Dabi didn't have much time to react as he swung it, using the momentum of it to himself out of way if he tried to shoot the flame. The concrete made contact, knocking Dabi back, and Y/N let go, letting himself fall. This is where the padding came in and the fighting style, which gave him the means to rebalance himself when he made contact with the ground. Dabi was still stumbling, holding his face, and groaning. Aizawa turned around and looked at Y/N, relief flooding his eyes. The unnamed villain came forward, launching a punch at Y/N, making contact, but Y/N used the momentum to shift her off her feet and throw her to the floor. Dabi stared at Y/N, curiosity and amusement flooding his face and a smile cracking across his lips. He drew flame into his hand and began to run towards Y/N, forgetting all about Aizawa.

He tried to grab a part of Y/N's body to ignite, but Y/N blocked his hand and tilted it to the side with his forearm before punching Dabi in the stomach, earning a grunt from the latter. Y/N lifted his free arm, angling his elbow to connect to the side of Dabi's chest. Dabi grabbed his arm before it made contact and Y/N could feel a searing heat begin to form. Change of plans, Y/N took his forearm that diverted Dabi's flame and threw a fist into his throat. Dabi choked, his grip loosening and giving Y/N the space to launch a kick at his stomach, pushing him back. The other villain got up from the floor and ran to Y/N looking to catch them unaware. She launched a punch and it connected, hurting a bit more this time as well as throwing Y/N down the road. There wasn't enough time to work to balance this fall, but Y/N covered his head and let the padding take most of the damage. The point where the villain connected stung and seemed almost stiff. Y/N tried to stand up, but struggled.

Aizawa took note of his cue and used his scarf to wrap around the still-extended fist of the villain. Dabi let her deal with her own battle, before turning around to see Y/N struggling. Eventually, Y/N rushed to touch his back, letting some of the quirk work and bringing something other than a stinging numbness to his back. He sat up with a hiss, and saw the fiery villain walk to him. Gathering the last of his strength, Y/N stood up and let his hand fall onto something in his belt. He ran forward, causing Dabi to frown at their audacity. He didn't know what to do but began to lift his hand, extending it outwards to shoot the flame, not expecting Y/N to use the padding on his knees. He ducked the flames, skidding across the asphalt before raising what he had hidden. It was a small knife, easily hidden, but deadly sharp. He found it while wandering through the Support Department.

Lifting up the blade, tilting it into a reverse knife grip, and stabbing it into the Dabi's thigh. The villain hissed as Y/N extracted the knife, turning it into a forward grip and jabbing upwards, hoping to get a connecting point near Dabi's neck. Aizawa decided to use a note from Y/N's book, and as the unknown villain ran towards him, he dodged out the way, tripping her. He used the momentum and the scarf to swing her and send her against Dabi. Y/N had a window of reaction time before bending his body over and letting Dabi trip over him as the other villain collided with him. Dabi groaned, and a small portal formed behind them. He grabbed the girl by the hand and nearly threw her into the portal before running into it himself.

The fatigue from their quirk, the pain in their back, and the adrenaline all became a bit too much, and they fell over onto their back, staring into the night sky. The point where the debris hit began to buzz as well. Aizawa nearly limped to Y/N, standing over them as he watched them stare out into the stars with half-shut eyes. He noticed the bruise forming on Y/N's head and realized what it could've been. He held out his hand, but Y/N was out of it, watching the stars.

Aizawa thought it might've been the quirk taking his energy and moving it to heal his body, so he dragged Y/N's body out of the way. Using a finger, he moved a lock of H/C hair from Y/N's face and found himself staring at their expressionless face. Maybe he was wrong about healers not being useful in a battle directly. He noticed a shining object in the middle of the road and went to pick it up. It was a small knife, covered in blood. He chuckled to himself before looking back at the still-resting form of Y/N.

"Not bad at all," he confessed silently.
