After Bianca took off, Xavier came by and told October that she was planning something, so October snuck into Ophelia Hall via dorm room window to tell Wednesday.
Wednesday asked, "Did you get anything?"
"I found this mask under Rowan's bed. It was beneath the floorboard," October told her, handing her the mask.
Wednesday asked, "And?"
"Either Rowan was a part of a cult or secret society, because what I saw was no masquerade ball," October told her. "He also tried to kill you by telekinetically throwing that gargoyle at you. He and Xavier got into an argument over it. Also there's something about a book because he ripped a page out of it."
Wednesday nodded at him.
"Also, Bianca is planning something at the Poe Cup," October told her.
Enid stormed in, looking like she was going to cry. She looked between them, "What's going on?"
"Nothing," Wednesday told her.
October asked, "What happened to you?"
"Yoko's in the infirmary," Enid said. She seemed on the verge of tears.
Wednesday asked, "What happened?"
"Garlic bread incident at dinner," Enid stated. "She had a major allergic reaction which means she's out of the Poe Cup and I'm out of a co-pilot," Enid stated, pacing.
"It wasn't an accident," Wednesday told her. "Bianca's behind it."
Enid asked, "How do you know that?"
"Xavier told me because Bianca didn't say it, but she implied it to him," October told her.
Enid asked, "Why would he tell you that?"
"I don't know," October replied. He wondered that too when he went to Ophelia Hall.
Wednesday said, "It doesn't matter. You and I are going to take her down tomorrow."
Enid stopped her pacing to look at her, "Wait. You're joining the Black Cats?" She looked touched, "You're willing to do that?" She stepped forward and Wednesday stepped back, "For me?"
"I want to humiliate Bianca so badly that the bitter taste of defeat burns in her throat," Wednesday stated.
Enid asked, "Yeah, but mostly you're doing this because we're friends right?"
Wednesday turned away from her.
"You discuss this and I'm going to leave," October told them.
"Bye," Enid told him.
"Bye," October replied, heading to the window and he was sure that he saw Wednesday roll her eyes.
"How do I look?" Ajax asked October as they stood by the tent with the jesters. October was rolling the ring around on his finger.
October looked at him, eyeing him up and down, "Stupid."
"Thanks, man," Ajax told him happily. He had gotten used to October's weird mannerisms and took it as a compliment.
Xavier looked at October, "Do we really?"
October looked at him. Xavier made it work, but he wasn't going to tell Xavier that, "Yeah." Besides, why did Xavier all of a sudden care about what October thought of their costumes?
"Well, maybe next year, you can pick out the short story," Xavier told him.
"I'd rather drown myself or burn myself alive which is a lot better use of my time," October told him, before walking away.
"That means he'll think about it," Ajax told Xavier.
October found Enid and Wednesday. Wednesday wore the cat costume, but no whiskers. He looked at his sister, "You look stupid."
"So do you," Wednesday replied.
October looked at Enid, "You look great, Enid."
"Thank you," Enid replied.
"Kill me," Wednesday deadpanned.
They went to the canoes while October went to stand with his Sรฉance Club friends.
Principal Weems went to the microphone. "I want to welcome you all to the Edgar Allan Poe Cup. This is one of Nevermore's proudest annual traditions, dating back 125 years."
Casper rolled her eyes.
Principal Weems continued, "Each team must row across to Raven Island, pull a flag from Crackstone's Cryptโ"
"I thought she was going to say Crackpot," October muttered.
Rebecca snickered at that.
"First team to cross the finish line with their flag wins the cup and bragging rights for a year, as well as some special privileges," Principal Weems continued. "Let the Poe Cup begin!"
The four canoes were off at a steady pace.
It took a few minutes for The Pit and the Pendulum to crash into a buoy.
"What crappy luck," Rebecca said dryly.
It looked like they got to Raven's Island.
"And here's the boring part," Josh stated as they docked at the island and took off at a runb.
It was another few minutes while Principal Weems watched through some binoculars.
"The final two teams are the Gold Bugs and..." She paused, "The Black Cats."
October watched as the Black Cats tried to paddle closer to the Gold Bugs so they can puncture the canoe, but the canoe started getting pushed away.
However, it seemed like someone able to get the canoe back in control and the Black Cats paddled closer to the Gold Bugs's canoe and punctured the side, before paddling away.
The Gold Bugs were left in the dust.
October smirked at what happened.
"The first Poe Cup took place in 1897 as a way to not only honor Nevermore's most famous alumni, but to celebrate those values that all outcasts share: community, perseverance, and determination. And we certainly saw those values on display today." There was a pause and a cheer, "Congratulations to Ophelia Hall!"
Wednesday went inside a building and October followed after her. She sat down underneath the statue of Edgar Allan Poe.
"Jesus Christ, these people worship him," October muttered.
"That symbol..." Wednesday muttered looking up.
October went to see what she was staring at.
Enid demanded, "What are you two doing down here?"
"Hiding," Wednesday replied. "People keep randomly smiling at me. It's upsetting."
Enid grabbed each of their arms, "It's called having your moment, Wednesday. You took down Bianca Barclay. Try to enjoy it. So, the girls wanna know if you wanna hang out later." She sighed, "Oh, come on, it won't kill you."
"I have to go feed Natasha," October said, before taking off to the dorm.
October was rudely awoken by not being able to breathe, which let him know that Wednesday smothered him awake.
"Get up," Wednesday hissed at him.
October grumbled, "What for?"
"I've figured out the next step to this case and I want you to keep a look out," Wednesday told him.
"Okay," October replied. "I'll change."
"Hurry because I will leave without you," Wednesday told him.
October put on some pants over some basketball shorts and grabbed his red and black striped jacket.
Wednesday looked at the other side, "Where's Ajax?"
October shrugged, "Don't know."
Wednesday led him to the Edgar Allan statue and stood on the plinth to look at the book.
"Hold on. I've seen this in Rowan's memories," October told her. He snapped twice.
The raven on the statue moved down and over, before the statue moved back, showing a staircase.
They went down the staircase, looking at old dusty portraits. He even saw a relative of Cousin Itt's.
"It needs a janitor," October stated.
"Shut up," Wednesday hissed at him.
They went down, ending up in the place that October had seen. It was a secret society. He wasn't sure what disappointed him more: that Rowan was a part of the secret society or that Rowan wasn't a part of a cult.
Wednesday shined the flashlight on a picture of their parents when they attended Nevermore.
October went to a bookcase with Wednesday and she grabbed a book that had been recently moved. She flipped it open right at a place where a page had been ripped out; the page that Rowan had ripped out.
"Let's go," Wednesday said. They turned around and a sack had been shoved over his head.
He couldn't ask for a happier ending than this.
