He broke into Thornhill's classroom after school on Tuesday to look for clues. He had Thing make sure that Thornhill wasn't in there before picking the lock and walking in. He wasn't exactly sure what he was looking, but a 'How to Take Over the World' plan being left behind in her desk would've been helpful.
Wednesday asked, "What are you doing?"
"Looking for Thornhill's Take Over the World plan," October said. He had told Wednesday about Thornhill blowing up the cave. It was a bummer too, since it seemed like Wednesday kind of liked Thornhill.ย
Although to be fair, to October, Thornhill had became a lot more interesting.ย
He knew that Thornhill was banking on the fact that if she blinded him with the light of the flashlight, he wouldn't have seen her. He saw her boots.ย
He had asked Enid to compile a list of people in the school who wore red boots. She had said, "Anything for my bro," and came back with three names, one of whom was Thornhill, but October was sure that it was Thornhill, since she consistently wore red boots and Enid had seen the two others at the dance.
So, he decided to play dumb, to make Thornhill lower her guard, so she wouldn't be as suspicious of him as he was of her. It wouldn't help if October let it be known that he was suspicious of Thornhill, which would make her suspicious of him, and they'll end up having a battle of will-power to see who didn't snap first by murdering the other.
Of course, he didn't tell anyone else besides Wednesday about Thornhill being at the cave. She was supposed to help chaperon the dance, so it'll be his word against many witnesses who would've seen her at the Rave'N. He was already thought of as crazy, believing in a monster who killed Rowan and people saw him leave the school. He didn't want to add to it. On top of that, he knew that eyewitnesses were notoriously unreliable, which would just add to the whole crazy thing. So he said, "I didn't see who did it, because they shined a flashlight in my eyes," when the sheriff asked him about who blew up the cave.
Wednesday went to look through the other side of the desk. She asked, "Anything useful?"ย
"No, but I found out that she's going to give us a test on Thursday and she's going to assign us some essay on Friday," October said. "So, no on her take over the world plan but yes on her lesson plan."
Wednesday found October in the beekeeping place, staring at the investigation board, which wasn't all that unusual anymore. October had added a picture of the cave and Thornhill to the investigation board, because he was trying to make sense of the two things connecting. How did Thornhill know about the monster's cave? Why did she blow it up? Is Thornhill working with the monster? Why?
He remembered seeing red boots, before the person tried to blind him with the light from the flashlight.ย
Wednesday took his arm, "Come on, our parents are here."
She led him to the pentagon where people were gathering. She looked at October's hand, "Why are your nails colorful?" She looked at her brother's nails, which was painted pink, purple, and blue.
October looked at his fingernails, "Enid asked if she could paint in the bi pride flag colors. So, I said okay." He shrugged.
Wednesday looked at the white and black studded wristband on his left wrist.
Enid walked up to where they standing at. She had her usual smile on. Wednesday noticed the pink and black studded wristband on Enid's left wrist.
Wednesday asked, "Now you having matching friendship wristbands?" She had noticed how oddly close Enid and October had gotten. October even abandoned his seat next to Xavier in favor of sitting next to Enid in Thornhill's class. Even Xavier seemed a bit bothered by the change in seats.
Enid nodded, still smiling, "Yeah. We're bros now."
"Nevermore was created as a safe haven for our children to learn and to grow no matter who or what they are," Principal Weems was now saying.
There was applause.
"I realize most you have heard about the unfortunate incident involving two of our students," Principal Weems continued. "But I'm happy to report that Eugene is on the mend and is expected to make a full recovery. Although October's facial scars are most likely going to be permanent."
October touched the scars on his face and on his neck. Three long scratches, like the ones that Xavier had on his neck, but Xavier's were fading, October's were most likely going to end up permanent.
"So, let's focus on the positive and make this Parents' Weekend our very best yet," Principal Weems continued.
There was more applause.
Wednesday had her arms crossed and muttered, "On the mend? Try in a coma."
Enid asked, "Have either of you been to see him?" Wednesday and October looked at her. "You're his friends."
"I'm the reason he's in the hospital," Wednesday said.
"Mine too," October replied.
Enid said, "That is not your fault, okay?"
October stated, "Try standing around while he got mauled, is that still not my fault?"
Enid grabbed his shoulder, "It still isn't. You know the monster hasn't attacked anyone in the past week." She added, "Maybe you two finally scared it off."
"Or maybe it went into hiding to avoid this weekend," Wednesday added, looking at Enid's hand on October's shoulder.
Enid removed it.
Wednesday looked past them, "I knew I should have worn my plague mask."
October looked past Enid to look at his parents and Pugsley. His heart sank. He hadn't seen them since he talked to them about the whole permanent facial scars.
Enid stated, "Would you look at my family?"
October looked at the picnic table with Enid's family. One of her brothers did a pitiful howl and it looked like two of her other brothers were playing. "I give my mom thirty seconds before her judge-y claws come out." Enid took a deep breath, "Let's get this over with."
October went to his parents with Wednesday following him.
"There they are," Gomez said, smiling. He hugged Wednesday first while October went to his mother.
She looked at the scratches, "Oh, my dear." She hugged him.
"I wish it took out my eye instead. That way I can wear an eye patch and look like a pirate," October joked, hugging her back. At this point, he would've preferred to lose an eye instead of having three facial and neck scars. He still wasn't sure how the monster swiped at him. Morticia let him go and he went to see Pugsley.
Mortica asked Wednesday, "And how are you, my little rain cloud?"
October looked at Pugsley. "I still think I should've lost an eye. I would've liked looking like a pirate."
Pugsley smiled, "Did it hurt?"
"Once the adrenaline went away, it did," October told him. "Did anyone bully you at school?" He considered the idea of not returning to Nevermore next year and go to regular public school with Pugsley.
"Well, I haven't been tied up and locked in lockers, so I guess I'm fine," Pugsley replied.
October asked, "Yeah, but has anyone insulted you?"
"Only a few times," Pugsley told him.
Then Principal Weems came over to them, offering to speak in the office.
"I'll show Pugsley the grounds," October said quickly. He didn't want to hear himself get criticized.
He watched his parents, sister, and the principal walk away to the office.
October looked at Pugsley, "Do you want to see where I got attacked or do you want to see how Natasha is doing?"
Pugsley seemed to think it over, "I want to see the woods where you got attacked."
October started to lead him to the woods.
"Where are you going?"
That was Xavier.
Why does it seem like Xavier had to bother him at the most inconvenient of times? Maybe it was revenge for the many times that October annoyed him โ per under Wednesday's orders, sometimes.
"I was going to show my brother around," October told Xavier. Pugsley and Xavier looked at each other awkwardly. "Xavier, this is my brother, Pugsley. Pugsley this isโ" Can he consider Xavier a friend despite what happened between Wednesday and Xavier? He added, "My and Wednesday's friend, Xavier."
Pugsley sounded incredulous, "Wednesday made a friend?"
Xavier looked between Pugsley and October.
"I know," October replied. "I'm so white, I might as be florescent." He nudged Pugsley, "Let's go, Pugs."
"I'll go with you," Xavier said.
October asked, "What about your dad?"
"He's not bothering to show up again," Xavier told him
October nodded in sympathy, "Sorry about that." He considered telling Xavier that he didn't want him to go with him to show Pugsley the grounds, remembering the whole 'screw romance!' thing with Enid. He was pretty sure that Enid would be a disappointed in him. He shrugged, "If you want." He looked at Pugsley, "I'll show you a cave."
"Cool," Pugsley replied, though he seemed confused as October started leading the way to the cave.
Xavier asked, "A cave?"
"The cave that Eugene and I were hanging out at last week," October replied with a shrug. "We caught a rare club-horned grasshopper together." He still had the grasshopper, who he named Taggert, after the comic book character, Doug Taggert, whose alias was The Grasshopper. Natasha kept staring at it, thinking it was dinner.
"Oh," Xavier replied.
It was silent as they walked to the cave.
Xavier asked, "How's your face and neck?"
"Both hurt," October replied with a smile.
Xavier seemed confused but they finally got to the cave.
Pugsley asked, "Can I go inside?"
"Yeah, go ahead," October replied and Pugsley went to the cave entrance.
Pugsley asked, "Why is everything burnt? Did you catch stuff on fire in here?"
"No," October replied.
Pugsley went inside the cave.
Xavier asked, "What if he gets hurt?"
"It's not that deep," October said. "Besides, if he starts screaming, it just means that he's having fun." He shrugged and hoped that Thornhill was going to show up.
Xavier asked, "Are you waiting for Thornhill?"
That confused October, because he said nothing about Thornhill to him. In fact, only he, Eugene, and Wednesday knew about Thornhill and Eugene was comatose. "How do you know about her?"
"I overheard you and Wednesday talking about the cave and Thornhill blowing it up," Xavier said. "How do you know it was her?"
"Her red boots I noticed after she tried blinding me with a flashlight," October said. "I talked to Enid and she said only three people wear boots, two were at the dance and Thornhill wears red boots all the time."
"What makes you think that she'll return? That's really stupid," Xavier said.
"Ted Bundy returned the next day after killing Georgann Hawkins to take her earrings and one of her shoes," October told him. "Gary Ridgway returned to his victims to commit necrophilia on them. David Berkowitzโ"
"Okay, I get it," Xavier said.
"You need read up on some true crime," October replied. "It's not that uncommon for serial killers to return to the scene of the crime. I'm kind of hoping she does show up." He looked at Pugsley, "Pugsley! Let's go. We should head back to the school."
"Fine," Pugsley said.
They started walking back to the school.
Xavier asked, "So, burning stuff in caves is something you do?"
"No," October replied.
"He burnt down at least six buildings," Pugsley said. "And that was last year."
"One of the owners wanted to remodel, so I did him a favor," October told Xavier with a wicked grin.
"They still don't know who did it," Pugsley chimed in with a smile.
Xavier nodded, "Good to know."
They finally got to the pentagon, and October spotted his family coming out of the building that has the office in it.
Xavier broke off to go somewhere else, so October and Pugsley went up to the other.
"We're going to see Dr. Kinbott," Wednesday told them. "Weems wants us to have a family session."
October was confused, "Okay?"
They walked to the car in silence.
So, I'm not entirely sure where Pugsley was at during the scene when Wednesday, Morticia, and Gomez were talking to Weems. I got a little concerned with the idea that Pugsley was roaming around the school by himself or something. I'm sure he could've been with Lurch, but I figured I will let October hang out with Pugsley, so Pugsley wasn't by himself.
