My ears began to ring with the way the girls chatter carelessly like wild parrots. Each one of them threw one stupid question after another. They made side remarks at Davinia in her absence. Their mother made no move to caution them neither did their dad. I know now that Davinia can hold her ground against them but their chattering burned deep in my drums. With the front they put up when I first got in, one would think they're well cultured and mannered but it was all a facade. They are nothing but ungrateful brats that don't know just when to shut it.
"Mr. Dimitri," The eldest called, her voice irks me. Like scrapping a fork on a wall. Nevertheless, I respond with a little raise of my head in her direction. My eyebrows bunch up, wondering what it is she wants to say to me.
She blushes profusely. My eyebrows furrow at the sight. What's wrong with her?
"You've hardly said a thing since Davinia left, did she spoil your mood?" She questioned innocently but we all know that there is nothing sweet about that question. I returned to my food, shaking my head at her foolishness.
"Certainly not, if anything, You girls just chased away my source of entertainment for tonight" I mused but my voice held a bit of threat. I look up to meet the baby blue eyes of the youngest whose name I now recall as Gloria. My lips pull to the right side at the look on her face. Fazed, annoyed and angry were the emotions battling for a place on her face.
A chuckle more like a cackle broke the stare-down between me and Gloria.
Isabella brought up her wine glass as she wipes the nonexistent tears away from her lids.
"We're terribly sorry for chasing her away" She spoke in an undertone before sipping her wine. She shot me a look from her glass, her pale blue held a mischievous glint. I simply ignored it.
She placed the glass down and picked up her cutleries with divine classiness. "If she had stayed any longer, she'd absolutely cause a scene" she muttered as she sliced through her steak.
"Just a heads up" Gloria whispered hastily, her head turning left and right. She leans closer, her head stretched forward above her meal. "She's crazy, like mentally deranged" She continues, still in a hushed whisper. "A disease she got from her mum" she finished, looking left and right again before settling back in her seat.
Isabella tuts, shaking her head slowly in disapproval. "Poor child" She grieved but her tone lacked the sympathy she tried to show. I swallowed my last bit of steak and washed it down with some red wine. I shot Gloria a cruel smile, watching her eyebrows scrunch in confusion before her body leans back into her chair as if to disappear from the hall. My smile spreads wider. I picked up the napkin and cleaned my lips with it, dropped it, and got up from my seat with my eyes still strained on her.
"Thanks for dinner, it was exquisite but next time you want to say something bad about my fiancée, I'd advise you whisper it amongst yourself, "I began, slowly dragging my words, allowing it to sink into their empty skulls." There won't be a repeat" I stated, locking eyes with each one of them, making sure the underlying warning in my voice wasn't ignored and it definitely wasn't cause they all look as pale as a whiteboard.
I buttoned up my suit and turned to leave with Max trailing behind me. The doors spread wide open the moment we got closer to it but before leaving I looked back at the ladies.
"Oh and, I like my women crazy" I added with a dramatic wink before leaving the hall completely.
I walked briskly with Andrei, my butler, chauffeur, and personal bodyguard. Max catches up with our pace, heaving loudly. I chuckle.
"Take no offense to the girls, they've been spoiled silly" He apologies. The wrinkles beneath his eyes, folds as he squints his eyes.
"Any sign of disrespect towards Davinia means disrespecting me and you know how I feel against disrespect. They left off with a warning, you should be thankful" I scoff, fixing my cufflinks. "Some don't get a second chance" I added chillingly. He nods slowly as he leads me to the elevator.
"Does she know about the agreement? I questioned. He pressed in the floor number and the elevator moved." if she didn't know before, she knows now" He sends me a weird grin.
The elevator stopped and we got into a dark-themed room. It was mostly vacant and spacious. Smells like wood and berries.
"Your room is on the same floor as Davinia. You ring the bell if you need anything, a maid will attend to you immediately" He explains as he walks further into the room inspecting it, so do I. It has a full glass door which opens to a verandah. Andrei opens it and I step out to the verandah, the wind hits me with full force, and sends my hair flying, ruffling my clothes.
Max joins me, tucks his hands in his pockets, and stares at the stream of lights ahead. It is a beautiful sight.
"This agreement was made by Davi's father and yours but if it's something you're not comfortable with. It can always be dissolved"
I cocked an eyebrow at him. "What makes you think I'm not comfortable with it, Max?"
He shrugs. "I'm trying to protect Davi here"
My eyebrows furrowed. "from who?"
"You" He turns to face me, pointing a finger at me "You won't be able to give her what she needs" He argues.
"Elaborate. What is it that I won't be able to provide?" I pressed.
He shifts his weight from one foot to another before stopping to glare at me.
"Love," He spat.
"you're not capable of giving her the love she needs," He hissed.
I look away from him to face the glimmering lights. There's no denying what he said, he's completely right. I have no love to give.
"I'm afraid, I've run out of love to give" I whispered to myself.
