you absentmindedly played with the barrettes in your h/c hair as you waited patiently by the river for muichiro to come.
ants marched across the red and white checkered blanket you had set up, and you flicked them with your finger, making them run off of the blanket and away from the lovingly prepared food you had made.
it had been hard to sneak away from your parents for this date, but it was worth it. the joy you felt sitting by the river and inhaling the sweet scent of the coming autumn was indescribable. it made your heart flutter and your lips curl into a smile.
finally, after many minutes of waiting, muichiro arrived and shyly approached you, carrying a large pink cloth bag with cherry blossoms embroidered on it. he laid the bag down on the blanket and opened it, placing a box of strawberry mochi on the blanket and handing you a carefully wrapped object folded neatly into a rectangle.
"i hope you like it," he said, a blush lighting up his beautiful face.
"i didn't know your size, so it might not fit perfectly."
you excitedly opened the present, ripping the paper used to wrap it into shreds in the process. muichiro watched you eagerly, excited and a little scared to see your reaction.
i hope she likes it... he anxiously thought, looking up at the clouds to calm his mind.
when he heard you squeal, he looked back down, afraid to meet your gaze.
what did a squeal mean? was it a good reaction or a bad one? he didn't know...
but when you threw your arms around him and gave him a kiss on the cheek, his fear melted away, and he knew that you loved the gift.
"mui, this is so beautiful!" you exclaimed, shocked that something so lovely could be yours.
he had given you a white kimono, with a cherry blossom tree embroidered on it. the tree was dropping petals, and there were little petals all over the dress. there was also an obi in the package to go with the kimono, and it was a lovely pink color with white clouds on it.
"i asked them to put clouds on the obi to represent me," muichiro said, smiling a sweet smile at you.
"that way, even when i'm gone on a mission, you can still have me with you in some form."
you aww-ed at the preciousness of this gift, and gave muichiro, who was as red as a tomato, another gentle kiss on the cheek.
"you're too kind to me!" you told him, wagging your finger at him playfully, like a teacher that was upset with a student.
he laughed softly, and his laugh made you laugh.
the two of you spent a moment just looking at each other, in love with everything about one another.
to muichiro, even your flaws were beautiful.
after a moment of silence, muichiro opened up the box of strawberry mochi he had bought.
"aren't you the one who likes strawberry mochi?"
he asked, hoping he hadn't forgotten your mochi preference. he forgot many things, and it irked him.
mitsuri is the one that likes strawberry mochi,
you thought, unsure of whether you should tell him that or not.
you weren't at all upset at him for forgetting- you knew that he couldn't help his forgetfulness- but he might think you were mad at him if you told him he had made a mistake.
so you just smiled, nodded, and gulped the mochi down, pretending to love it.
you had made sweet dango and tanghulu as well, which you unpacked and presented to muichiro. you also had brought milk, which you had packed with ice, but the ice had melted already, and the milk was warm.
despite that, muichiro drank the milk gladly and commented on how amazing your dango and tanghulu was. you thanked him, and assured him that he could take all of it home if he wanted.
as you were finishing your food, you heard footsteps coming towards you, and froze.
you recognized those heavy, aggressive footsteps as your fathers' footsteps, and you curled up in a ball on the blanket, panicking. if he saw that you had snuck out to eat with a boy, you'd most likely get beaten badly.
he said you weren't allowed to date until you were eighteen, but you met muichiro and loved him so much that you were willing to disobey the man you usually obeyed in order to be with him.
muichiro's hands tensed on the hilt of his sword, ready to draw it and fight if he had to.
however, you didn't want any bad blood between him and your father, so you instructed him to hide behind a nearby rock and stay there until your father left.
muichiro hesitated, and you begged him with tears in your eyes to go. when he saw you crying, he obeyed you, but you could hear him muttering about how he thought this was a bad idea the whole time he was running to get behind the rock.
"y/n. why are you here?"
your father came up behind you and laid a hand on your shoulder. he wasn't squeezing your shoulder though, and he sounded relatively happy, which was a good thing.
"father! it's a beautiful day out today, i came here to enjoy some snacks!"
his eyes wandered over to the cherry blossom cloth bag that was resting on the blanket. you had put the kimono and mochi in it, and had covered them up with the tanghulu you had made, which you had put in a large box. if your father looked in the bag, all he would see was tanghulu... that was, if he didn't look too closely.
"that's a pretty bag," he said.
"where did you get it?"
your breath hitched, and you cursed mentally. you had forgotten that your father would have known that the bag wasn't yours; after all, he made it his business to make sure he knew all of what you owned so that you had nothing that he disapproved of.
"a friend gave it to me," you responded, hoping he wouldn't ask for further details.
but, knowing your father, a simple answer was never enough.
"a friend, huh? it wouldn't happen to be a male friend, would it?"
despite your sweaty hands and your heart hammering against your chest, you smiled brightly at your father and acted as if you had done nothing wrong.
"her name is mitsuri," you lied.
your father smiled, and you knew that you were out of danger for the moment.
"that's good," he said, pleased with your obedience.
he patted you on the head affectionately- which you had always hated, but were too scared to tell him- and sauntered away casually, as if he hadn't just given you the fright of your life.
you were lucky he didn't know how to tell your emotions from looking at you like other fathers could, or you would've been in serious trouble.
when you were sure that the coast was clear, you called to muichiro, who came out of hiding.ย his brow was furrowed, and he appeared to be quite tense.
"what's wrong, mui?" you asked, concerned.
"i can't stand your father," he bluntly replied.
you laughed and then immediately stopped when you saw the seriousness of his expression.
"aww, mui... it's okay! i promise you, he won't know we're dating," you said, trying to comfort him.
"i want him to know," muichiro snapped.
you were taken aback by this, and looked at him in confusion.
"i want him to know how beautiful his daughter is, how much joy she makes me feel everyday. i want him to know that, despite what he thinks, you are worthy of nothing but love and gentleness."
tears filled your eyes, and you covered your face with your hand to hide them.
how could muichiro be so kind to you?
did you truly deserve that kind of treatment?
you doubted that highly. after all, you were just a sensitive, ugly mess of a girl that could do nothing right.
muichiro saw you crying and immediately wrapped his arms around you, holding you and stroking your hair, whispering loving words and kind affirmations to calm you down.
when you had finished crying, you disentangled yourself from his arms and looked up at him with love in your eyes.
"you're the best thing that ever happened to me," you told him.
"and you are the same to me," he replied.
