your head was hanging low as you shakily inhaled the night air. the scent of blood was overpowering you, and you curled up on your porch, whimpering in pain.

during a mission earlier in the day, a demon had managed to cut your side. the cut wasn't bad, and you had stopped the blood easily, but the shame you felt was overpowering.

you were the child of kaguya ubayashiki, a legendary demon slayer. your genes gave you incredible power, but you were failing at using it.

you were a disappointment to your father and to the entire demon slayer corps. you should just give up on being a demon slayer and live a nice life in the country.

the sound of doors sliding open prompted you to quickly shift your position so that you were sitting up straight and looking up at the sky. you forced yourself to smile.

even though kaguya couldn't tell whether you were smiling or not, he somehow always knew when you were upset, and you hoped that you could trick him somehow.

"y/n? where are you?"

you heard your father calling for you and you called out to him back.

"i'm on the porch, father!"

kaguya came and sat down next to you, reaching out to place your hands on his lap. his omnipresent smile was shining brighter than the stars, mending your broken heart.

"it's late, my child. why aren't you sleeping?"

you looked away from him, staring up at the stars and gulping down your tears.

kaguya's grip on your hands tensed, and you cursed mentally.

somehow, he could still tell that you were stressed, even though you were smiling brightly and forcing a happy tone to permeate your voice.

"my child...?" he whispered, concern in every inch of his face.

his hands crept over to the wound on your side, and you tried to shift away from them so that he didn't touch it.

"w-what happened?" he gasped, his fingers gently touching the sides of the wound.

you gasped in pain and tore his hands away from your body.

"don't touch me!" you cried out, reflexively backing away.

kaguya hung his head and looked away from you, tears in his eyes.

"my child, why didn't you tell me you were hurt?"

he asked, broken-hearted.

he looked so weak and small in the pale light of the moon, when you hazarded a glance at him you felt tears coming to your eyes.

"father, i-"

you began, unsure of how to proceed.

kaguya threw his arms around you and held you tightly, breathing hard. his tears wet your nightgown, but you didn't mind. you just sat there feeling numb as he cried into your shoulder.

"father, i'm not dead," you said in a weak attempt to comfort him.

"how did you get hurt?"

he asked, refusing to let go of you, as if you'd disappear if he let go for one second.

"it was..."

you hesitated, and he squeezed you tighter.

"did someone hurt you?"

there was a dangerous tone in his voice, a tone that made you realize why people were intimidated by him in his prime.

"no! it wasn't that!"

you quickly refuted his assumption, not wanting him to hurt anyone.

"it was... a demon," you finally managed to say.

kaguya let go of you and looked towards the sky, probably imagining the stars he could not see. he refused to meet your eyes, refused to even look towards you.

"father, are you upset?"

guilt was weighing your heart down, choking you. you wouldn't be able to live with yourself if you had made your father upset.

"you could have died."

there was no gentleness in kaguya's voice, only a cold decisiveness. he was stating a fact, and doing so with no emotion.

"i might die any time i go on a mission, father. this one was no different."

"i could've lost you... my sunlight, the joy of my life..."

"i'm hardly all that, father. you exaggerate."

kaguya gasped and looked at you with a shocked expression on his face. your heart dropped to your feet, and you cursed.

he wasn't supposed to know about my self esteem issues...

"do you think you don't mean anything to me?"

his voice was choked, broken. you couldn't bear to hear it.

"father, it's nothing, really! i'm just tired."

you tried to dodge the question, but kaguya wouldn't let you.

"my love. listen to me."

you turned away from him, but he moved your face back towards him with two fingers.

"no matter what your mind may be whispering to you, you are good enough. you are the light of my life, and you brighten up my day and the days of everyone else around you. you are so strong, physically and mentally, and i know that you can get through this. you are my precious child, and i love you. not because you're a talented demon slayer- although you are-"

"what a lie," you whispered.

"-but because you are my child. i've loved you since you were a baby, why would i stop loving you now? think about it, y/n. really think about it."

you looked up at your father, and felt an unbearable weight being lifted off of your chest.

no matter what the demons in your mind told you, you were loved and appreciated by everyone, especially your father. he would never- could never- hate you. parental love was too strong for that to ever happen.

"i love you, father!"

you sobbed, burying your head in his chest as you finally let all your tears flow freely.

"my beautiful child..."

kaguya hummed, stroking your back.

"i love you too. and i'll never stop loving you."

a/n: did i project what i wish people would tell me into kaguya? oh yes, definitely.

this entire oneshot was kinda me projecting my life onto a character, and for that, i apologize :D

i hope you liked it though! stay safe and well, i love you all so much <3
