kibutsuji mikoto was the undisputed ruler of femme fatales in the city, and everyone knew it.

with the blood of her father, kibutsuji muzan, flowing through her veins, and the natural fighting spirit instilled in her since birth, she killed her targets with grace, showing no mercy.

looking at her, it was impossible to see the sweet, kind child she had been twelve years ago. and she liked it that way.

kindness is weakness, she would tell herself everyday as she did menial tasks around the gang's hideout. never show your emotions.

muzan was proud of her, but he was also saddened by the fact that her precious, kind heart had withered and died. he never thought he'd be lauding kindness, but when it came to mikoto, that was all he did.

when mikoto caught muzan looking at her with sadness in his eyes, she could feel pain in her heart, and would no longer look at him.

she knew that he missed the old her- the bubbly, kind, cheerful her. but that personality was useless to you in gang work. members of a gang couldn't be bright and happy, it didn't fit the job description.

unless you were douma. in which case, you could, but it was just a faรงade.

mikoto hated douma.

she knew that he was her biological father, and it would be filial of her to love him, but she couldn't stand him. the fake aura of joy and amity he displayed was all an illusion, a lie made up to seduce the humans into loving him. that was what he had done to her mother, megumi.

kikuchi megumi was a kind young woman, and she had fallen on hard times when she met douma. his charm and helpfulness won her over, and when he helped her climb out of the rut she was in, she fell completely in love with him.

douma pretended to love her, all while concealing his true nature from her. they had a child out of love, but they were not married, which was highly frowned upon by many.

when mikoto was born, douma appeared to congratulate megumi, but rarely came to visit mikoto. as she grew up, she only saw him occasionally, and even then, the time she saw him was so short. he always seemed anxious when he visited, looking around as if someone would jump out and attack him. mikoto never understood why until now.

when she turned five, she remembered someone coming to her door in the middle of the night. megumi was asleep, but the loud knocking woke her up. she raced down the stairs in her nightgown, wrapping herself in a blanket as she ran. mikoto watched from the top of the stairs as her father, douma, entered from the shadows and stabbed her mother to death.

thankfully, he didn't notice mikoto, so she was saved. but the death of her mother affected her greatly. she had no house to live in, so she lived in the streets for a year, until muzan found her and rescued her, keeping a locket with a photo of her mother in it as the only memory of what had happened.

when she had met douma again when she was six, he took one look at her and looked away with contempt in his face.

"what is this child doing here, master muzan?"

he had asked angrily.

muzan had told him that mikoto was his daughter, and he showed him her necklace with the photo of megumi in it.

douma threw the necklace to the ground and ran out of the room, and mikoto burst into tears.

ever since then, mikoto hadn't interacted with douma unless she had to. she didn't even call him daddy. that term was reserved for muzan and muzan only.

she heard a knock on the door to her room and went to go answer it.

"ah, daddy! come in!"

muzan stepped into her room and sat down on mikoto's bed. after closing the door, she joined him, and laid her hand over his as a reflex.

"i have a mission for you," he told her.

perking up like a wilted flower that is given water, mikoto looked her father dead in the eyes and smiled a smile of excitement.

"what is it?"

she asked, hoping it was something dangerous and risky.

she loved missions like those. they made her heart beat so fast that she could feel it banging against her chest like it was trying to break free of its confines.

"it's a dangerous one."

muzan said, concerned for his daughter's safety.

he knew she enjoyed taking risks and loved the feeling of adrenaline rushing through her veins. he respected the fact that she was that way; however, it made him anxious sometimes.

he wouldn't be able to live if his daughter died.

she was the light of his life.

he couldn't be in sunlight due to the demon blood in him, but it didn't matter. she was his sunlight and moonlight, his guiding star. without her, he would be trapped in darkness forever.

mikoto noticed how scared her father looked, and she leaned her head against his shoulder and stroked his hands, trying to make him feel better.

"father," she said, choosing to be more formal due to the situation, "i promise you, i will return safely. there's no need to worry about me."

muzan smiled a weak smile at her, obviously not convinced that she was truly going to be alright.

"there is a new gang that has recently been formed that is causing the twelve kizuki some concern. they're called the demon slayers, and their sole objective appears to be exterminating all demons."

"racists!"

mikoto hissed angrily, her gray eyes hardening with rage.

"indeed," muzan replied.

"the goal of your mission is to infiltrate this gang and kill the leader, kaguya ubayashiki. despite being blind, he is a very strong fighter, so do not underestimate him. understood?"

mikoto nodded and replied, "i understand completely, father."

"good girl."

muzan said, absentmindedly caressing mikoto's hair.

he seemed to have forgotten that she hated that, but he loved doing it, so mikoto pretended she loved it.

"you'll leave tomorrow morning. get ready."

as soon as muzan left, mikoto rushed to get ready. she was excited for this mission, more excited than she'd ever been before.

she had no clue what was going to happen to her.
