nakime sadly looked at the dusty piano sitting alone in the empty house.
hesitantly, she raised her hand to touch it one last time, and a picture fell out from under the cover. (idk what that thing that covers the keys when you're not playing is called so i'm just gonna call it that and hope i'm right)
she knelt down on the ground and picked up the picture, brushing the dust off of it so she could look closely at it.
when she saw who was in the picture, she dropped it back down to the ground, and tears filled her eyes.
in the photo, she had been kneeling on the ground next to the piano playing a biwa as her boyfriend, y/n, was playing piano. as he was playing, he was looking towards her with love in his eyes, and she was smiling.
the date written on the back in his familiar messy handwriting read 2017, six years ago.
and those six years felt like an eternity.
an eternity spent since she'd seen her lover for the last time.
an eternity since she'd pressed her lips to his after the duet was finished.
an eternity after their long night spent under the covers together.
she hadn't expected it, and he probably hadn't either, but early in the morning the next day, as he was driving back home, y/n's car had been crashed into by a drunk driver.
he was dead on impact. there was no saving him. no breathing life back into those lips that once spoke passionately of love and dreams of days in the distant future spent together.
nakime had fallen into a deep depression after that. she hadn't touched her biwa since then, and she never talked to anyone about how she felt- not that she had any friends to talk to anyway.
but as she sat there, wallowing in despair, she spotted yet another memory from the past she wanted to forget, shoved hastily into the piano bench and never given a second chance.
she carefully opened up the bench and removed the folded pieces of paper from it, smoothing them out with her hand and looking over what was written there.
y/n had, by hand, written out sheet music for a song. due to his messy handwriting, it was a little hard to understand, but nakime read it until she was able to read every note and understand every dynamic present in the song.
then, she took out her biwa and, after dusting it- instruments gathered a lot of dust after they weren't used for six years- she put the sheet music up on a stand and began to play.
as her pick adeptly strummed the strings of the biwa, summoning a mournful and contemplative sound that mirrored the emotions in her heart, memories flashed in front of nakime's eyes as if she was seeing them in front of her in reality.
y/n and her playing a duet on a rainy afternoon.
she and y/n sharing passionate kisses curled up on the window seat in his apartment.
the two of them sharing many good dinners together, clinking their wine glasses together and toasting to a future spent together until death- a future that never happened.
by the time she had finished the song, her eyes were filled with tears once again, and she held tightly onto her biwa as if it was a lifeline, saving her from the sweeping waters of her grief.
she looked at the back of the last page of the sheet music and saw a note from y/n. against her better judgement, knowing it would probably make her cry, she read it.
my precious love nakime,
may this song always be a memory of our love. in stormy lows and sunny highs, you've always been there for me. if i can't be there for you in the future, know that this song will always be there.
i'm sorry for how messy it is- you know my handwriting is atrocious- but i have confidence that you will be able to understand it and play it beautifully.
everything about you is beautiful. never forget that.
your lover now until death,
l/n y/n
nakime was speechless. she stared at the note in shock, not moving or making any sounds. she was frozen like a statue, staring down at the words that hit her like an attack.
she noticed a date written on top of the piece, most likely the day y/n had finished composing it.
february 18th, 2017.
the day before his death.
did he know, somehow? did he leave this as a gift for her?
there was no way! powers like knowing your future didn't exist in the world, he couldn't have known.
but somehow, it brought nakime comfort to believe that he did know, and that he composed this song to bring her comfort when he was gone.
"everything about you was beautiful too, my love," she whispered, as her tears dropped onto the sheet music.
a/n- not really a fan of the ending of this, but it's whatever. as long as other people like it, that's all that matters!
i don't write for the demons in demon slayer well, so i apologize if nakime is ooc here :(
i hope you liked this oneshot! have a lovely day <3
