▌MAEVE LEFT VI FOR THE third time. her heart stung with the thought, a bitter ache that refused to fade.
it was different this time— she didn't even know if she could go back this time, not to vi, she's got caitlyn now.
she furrowed her brows at the thought of caitlyn and vi together. caitlyn? and vi? the image was almost laughable. maeve would treat vi right, treat her right, make her feel good, make her happy. and what would caitlyn do?
when she saw that vi wasn't the perfect little soldier she imagined her to be? would turn on her? betray her? maeve's mind swirled with dark thoughts, bitterness leaking out with each step.
she would be the one to take care of vi. she could make her happy. couldn't she?
the jealousy gnawed at her, relentless as she walked aimlessly. she was still near the memorial grounds, the familiar path stretching ahead.
her legs were heavy, and her eyelids felt weighted. the weariness pulled her down like gravity itself, and her head drooped, yet she forced herself to fight to stay awake.
"hate is such a strong word, don't you think?" the voice that cut through her thoughts was unmistakable— harsh, rusted, like metal scraping against stone. maeve's body snapped awake, spinning around with a jolt.
jinx stood before her, that smug, sarcastic smile plastered on her face as she stepped closer. her blue braids swayed with each step, a mockery of maeve's tired, disheveled state.
"maybe," maeve muttered, forcing a casual shrug, though the anger simmered beneath. "unless it's used for the right reasons." she shoved her hands into her back pockets, standing still, her jaw clenched.
jinx hummed, a soft, mocking sound as she took another step forward. "you really hate me? but you refuse to lose me?" she chuckled lightly, but there was something darker in her voice. "you're confusing me."
her words wrapped around maeve like a vine, suffocating and poisonous.
the sunlight blazed above them, casting their shadows long across the ground. jinx stopped just a few feet away, twirling her gun lazily between her fingers, that same twisted smile never leaving her lips.
maeve's pulse quickened. she knew that smile. she knew the dangerous game jinx played.
"do i really need to reason with you?" maeve's voice was low, edged with bitterness. her eyes narrowed as she met jinx's gaze. "i hate you, i hate what you do. but at the end of the day, you're still my little sister."
the words hit harder than maeve expected, landing with a thud against the cold, impassive expression on jinx's face.
"i'm completely fine with who i am, maeve." jinx's voice was honey-sweet but laced with venom as she taunted the girl with her lies.
"maybe that's why you aren't. because no one needs you anymore." the words spilled from her lips like poison, and maeve felt each syllable sting, sharper than any blade.
maeve shook her head, the denial rising up like a storm inside her. "that's not true." her voice was firm, desperate even. she tried to convince jinx, but more than that, she tried to convince herself. "It's not."
jinx laughed— just a quiet chuckle, but it felt like a thousand daggers piercing maeve's chest. "who needs you then? vi? the piltie? ekko? powder?" the question was a mocking taunt, each word sinking deeper into maeve's gut.
realization hit her like a punch to the stomach.
jinx wasn't the girl maeve had clung to in her mind— the little sister who had once looked up to her, the girl she could save. no, jinx was someone else entirely now, someone darker, someone lost to the chaos inside her.
maeve swallowed hard, her chest tightening. "you're right," she said, almost too quietly. "no one needs me, yet i'm the one saving every single one of your asses."
jinx blinked, caught off guard by maeve's sudden admission. maeve stepped forward, her voice sharp now, raw with years of unspoken frustration.
"i saved vi every damn time since she got out of stillwater," maeve continued, her words tumbling out in a torrent. "i saved you and ekko when you were kids, more times than I can count. and, despite how much i can't stand cait, i still saved her ass not even an hour ago."
a heavy silence fell between them. maeve could hear the faint sound of her own breathing as she stepped closer, her anger shifting into something else— something dark, something resigned.
"but you're right once again, jinx. the criminal mastermind is always right!" maeve's voice dripped with sarcasm, her hands flung up in frustration as she let out a small chuckle.
"congratu-fucking-lations, jinx. you've won." she let her arms fall to her sides, the weight of the situation pressing down on her.
jinx stood there, watching her, amusement flickering in her eyes. maeve couldn't help but feel a twinge of resentment at how unaffected jinx seemed. the air between them grew thick, electric, as their eyes locked in a silent battle.
jinx's eyes shimmered, glowing with that unmistakable neon light. maeve's gaze repeated hers, just for a moment, and in that brief instant, jinx caught it.
"shimmer?" jinx murmured, her voice suddenly soft, a touch of realization creeping in.
maeve didn't flinch. "yeah. shimmer," she said, her voice flat.
"for months, i was your savior's test subject. i suffered while you were just in the next room, creating another one of your stupid bombs." her tone was sad but steady, no longer hiding the truth.
"i know exactly how it feels, jinx." there was a pause. maeve stared at her, her voice hardening once again.
"i understand you more than you know. but what i don't understand is why you keep doing this. why ruin people's lives? why take lives?"
jinx's gaze softened just a fraction, but she didn't respond right away. she just stared at maeve, her expression unreadable.
"why does anyone do anything they do?" jinx finally asked, and the question caught maeve off guard. it was so simple, so empty.
maeve opened her mouth, but the words never came. she was left dumbfounded, grasping for answers that she didn't have.
the silence between them stretched on, taut and heavy, until jinx spoke again.
"do us all a favor, maeve," jinx said, her voice cold, cutting through the stillness. "go back to what you were doing. go back to the brothel, or your little hobbit life. everything was better like that."
maeve's chest tightened, and the words stung deeper than anything. it stung even worse because jinx knew it all, she knew what maeve went through, and no sorrow crossed inside of the younger girl.
it was a cruel, familiar echo of everything she had ever feared. jinx was right— no one did need her anymore. she was nothing more than a ghost in a city that had long since forgotten her.
she wanted to say something, anything, to lash out, but the words slipped away. instead, she spat the only thing that came to mind.
"run back to your daddy, jinx." Her voice was raw, filled with disgust and hatred, but there was a hint of something else too— self-loathing.
jinx faltered for just a moment, and maeve saw the briefest flash of something— vulnerability? regret? it was gone in an instant, replaced by the same old venom, but maeve knew what it meant.
without another word, jinx pulled her hoodie over her head, spinning on her heel and walking away, her silhouette fading into the thick air that spun around them.
maeve watched her go, her heart pounding with the weight of everything she had just lost.
jinx was gone, and with her, maeve's last shred of hope that the world could ever make sense again.
she hated jinx. she hated the person jinx had become. the girl she'd once tried so hard to save was long gone, and the person left behind didn't need her.
the only person Maeve had ever really wanted to save, most likely hated her guts by now. she was nothing to vi, and caitlyn had taken her place.
maeve stood there, her feet glued to the ground, the weight of everything pressing down on her chest. the city felt colder now, more distant.
with a deep, shuddering breath, maeve turned away.
there was only one place left to go now. she knew where she had to be before she could leave all of this behind.
the kiramman house.
