꒰ ❛ be okay with being alone ❜ ꒱
▌SHE SAT ON THE CRACKED CONCRETE stairs, her elbows on her thighs as she held her head in her hands. the whole situation crashing down on her at once as anger and resentment grew inside of her.
how could anyone do this during a memorial? who would do this in general? maeve was confused and in shock. she had no idea who was behind this and it was eating her up.
as she looked up from her lap, she noticed the bodies littered around the place. mothers, son, daughters, fathers— all of them leaving the comfort of their homes unaware they wouldn't return.
her heart broke into a million pieces, sorrow filling up her body. while the feeling of hate made her mad, maeve was honestly shocked when it came to the people who were willing to do any of this.
vi was currently talking to caitlyn, their voices unheard amongst the ringing inside of maeves head. her eyes watched at the distance that was between them.
watching as an overwhelming feeling of jealousy swarmed inside of her as vi leant a comforting hand to caitlyns cheek. she closed her eyes tightly and looked away.
she missed what they had when they were younger. their little flirts, their hugs, when theyd catch eachother staring at eachother. maeve had the biggest crush on vi, but nothing could've convinced her that the pink haired girl liked her back.
she wanted nothing more then to make everything official with her when she was younger. be able to do the things she imagined doing with vi. touching her hand, hugging her, kissing her softly.
but even though she didn't, the moments they shared, were ones that never truly left maeves mind. even, throughout the mixed emotions of hatred and love that ran through her body.
"hey.." vi's soft voice cut maeve from her thoughts, her head spinning to face the red haired girl who leaned against the metal railing.
"hey, how is she?" maeve asked, crossing her legs over eachother as she played with her finger tips. she knew how caitlyn was most likely feeling, because she would be feeling the same way.
"she's really pissed." vi nodded, looking down at her shoes. "i could've guessed that, vi." sarcasm laced in maeves tone as she looked up at vi. "a god damn memorial." she shook her head, looking away.
"we can't keep letting things like this happen." vi said, hesitation was noticed in her voice as maeve furrowed her eyebrows. "we need to do something."
maeve stood up from her spot on the crumbling stairs, "and how do you suggest we do that?" she asked, not sure if she wanted to hear her reasoning.
vi was frozen in her place as she was truly starting to second guess bringing it up. her eyes ripped away from maeve once again. "vi, look at me. what is it?"
maeve stepped forward, her hand landing on the girls arm. vi's gaze turned to her hand, tracing up to her arm and facing the girl infront of her who had sudden worry fronting her.
"we join caitlyn. help her and the others in stopping whatever this madness is."
maeves heart pounded heavily in her chest, her whole body tensing up as the look she once had washed away in seconds, her eyebrows furrowing and her lip turning in disgust.
disbelief written all over her face as she stepped back away from the girl, "your kidding, right?" her hand slipped off of the girls arm.
the anger swelled inside of her like a rip tide, vi looked at her with a cold stoned face. implying to maeve that she was serious.
"oh, wow," she chuckled with a shallow breath, "your saying, we put on that damn uniform, fight on their side?" maeve shook her head with genuine shock.
vi was still silent, "fuck me," she breathed out, looking into the sky as she placed her hands on her hips, "you know exactly what they did to us. everything we've been through, everything we've stood against."
"ofcourse i do. you don't think i remember anything of that night? i lost my parents that night too, maeve. we both watched eachother lose our family," vi paused, maeve watched as vi grew more and more frustrated with the words she spoke.
"i remember the screams, the cries, every single sound. every single moment of it."
the words hit home to maeve, knowing she felt the exact same way. and thats why she felt so much hatred towards them.
"and thats why i fight. i fight because i cannot lose anymore people. i cannot lose you." vi continued, stepping closer towards maeve, their eyes locked as maeve started to break her confident front.
"we tried, mae. but powders gone, all we have is jinx." her voice cracked into a whisper, the grief in her tone pierced through maeves body as she watched vi look down.
maeve had no genuine words to say to the girl, but vi wouldn't stop her speech. word flowing out of her mouth one after another, doing everything to try and convince the girl.
"and all of this, isn't going to get any better. it can't keep happening, whether you want to admit it or not— it's true. the cycle will just continue rolling until it keeps tearing us apart, one by one."
maeve shook her head, "no, no. this wasn't jinx. it couldn't of been," she stepped away from her.
"this may not have been her, but its the reality she's apart of now. and if we don't do anything and stop her. her hatred for us is only going to get stronger, she'll destroy not only us but everyone and everything else."
maeve looked at her with anger. vi knew exactly how she felt about that uniform, she knew exactly how she felt about saving everyone. and the fact she could ever suggest something like this to her honestly made her want to sob.
"i hate her, i hate her for hurting you, i hate her for doing what she's doing. but, you don't get to spring something like this on me, because nothing with take over the hate i have for that uniform, violet."
vi stared at her, her tired eyes filling with anger and frustration. "but," maeve started once again.
"no one can blame her for being how she is. especially because you caused her to be like this. you left her, and she believed she had no one, so she turned to the next best thing."
vi stumbled backwards, "we may have lost powder, but i refuse to lose my little sister permanently, when all she needs is help."
maeves harsh words stung through her own heart. anger took over her body as she argued with violet. "that's not fair, and you know its not."
her words hung through the air as they locked eyes. "you've made your decision. i've made mine, so go be with caitlyn. i'm positive you'll be a whole lot happier without me."
maeve turned her back towards vi, who had tears prickling at her eyes. maeve was leaving vi, again. thats all she could do, all she could do was leave.
it was she remembers everyone doing to her, and shes only copying their actions. over the years, maeves realised one thing, and one thing only.
no one stays.
and sometimes, thats what you have to accept. its what you have to admit to yourself sometimes, its what you have to prepare for and be okay with.
be okay with being alone. it's the only way you'll get around in this world. thats reality, and it stings.
