▌DEATH FOLLOWED ONE AFTER ANOTHER. steadily rising to a breaking point. with each moment that passed, with each blink of an eye, another life was lost.
when the shot rang out at the piltover council, it was as if the world itself held its breath— an eerie silence fell over everything.
in that instant, normalcy shattered. no one was ever quite as they appeared, and no one would ever be the same again. maeve wasn't, and maeve knew she wouldn't ever.
the weight of the moment lingered on their shoulders, shocking them to their core as they all really take in what had just happened. altering the course of lives in ways no one would ever imagine.
everyones objective was to kill jinx, murder her like she murdered the innocent people of piltover. caitlyns heart pounded with hatred, the need of revenge pulsing inside of her.
maeve was starting to spiral into a rage. slowly emerging herself into the deep end, the only thing holding was vi who wasn't as far gone as her. but caitlyn, however, was fully immersed in the deep end, beyond saving after losing her mother.
maeve's heart ached for her, because she knew that pain— knew what it was like to lose a parent, to lose the one person who had meant everything. that was partly the reason as to why maeve was still in the kirmmans house.
also because vi refuses to let the girl out of her sight. they haven't spoken about what happened the night of jinx's party, nor did mae think they were ever going too.
still, the feeling gnawed at her: she didn't belong here. vi deserved this house, this safety, this warmth, she had to be here.
maeve didn't. but she had nowhere else to go. she wasn't about to argue with vi about it, either. she'd caused her enough stress and pain already— getting herself into danger, going on reckless missions, almost dying.
maeve was a mess, and all she could do was blame herself for vi's suffering. she wanted nothing more than to hold her, to make her pain go away, but she knew that wasn't her place anymore. and deep down, she knew it was her own fault.
right now, maeve was shadowing vi's footsteps. leaning herself behind and against the wall that lead out to where caitlyn and her father were speaking. vi peaked through the walkway, listening in.
but something about it felt off to maeve. they were having their moment, and yet here they were, eavesdropping in the doorway. "what is she still doing here?" caitlyn's father suddenly broke the silence, his voice thick with frustration.
maeve could imagine the look on his face. a mixture of anger and resentment, but no one blamed him for it. he lost his wife to violets sister, and nothing could help that pain fade away.
when vi turned and walked away, her face a mask of sadness and guilt, maeve followed her without a word, sending a small look to the kirammans. her boots barely made a sound against the linen floor as she followed up behind vi.
"vi, we should go," maeve said softly. "they don't want us here."
vi paused, shaking her head, her expression resolute. "i'm not leaving. we're not leaving. not without talking to cait first."
their bodies stopped by the large window that revealed the rain drooling from the clouds.
maeve leaned against the window frame, watching as caitlyn's footsteps echoed down the hallway. she could see the way vi's gaze softened as shd spun to face the girl.
frustration and grief battling inside her and maeve knew caitlyn was holding it all in, trying to keep it together.
"hey," vi whispered, her voice barely audible.
and just like that, caitlyn broke. her composure shattered, and she collapsed into vi's arms, sobbing. maeve stepped back, feeling like an intruder as the two of them held each other in the stillness of the room.
violet placed a gentle, comforting hand on the back of her head. maeve couldn't help but feel like an intruder during this raw and emotional moment. wanting nothing more then to walk away into that rain and go back to where she belongs.
when they finally pulled apart, maeve turned away, knowing that violet would offer some form of comfort— and knowing she wouldn't be able to stomach it.
after everything that had happened between her and vi, something had shifted. things were clearer now, but they were also clouded by confusion.
then the conversation shifted, and the mention of a certain blue haired girl immediately caused her to spin around.
"you were right, cait. powder's gone." vi's voice was soft as she spoke. "i can make this right. if you get jayce to fix the gauntlets, i can do it myself, no one else needs to get hurt." vi stepped forward slightly, maeve rushed over to her side with a panicked breath.
"step down from the hero act for a second," maeve said, placing a hand on vi's shoulder. "we can say no one else gets hurt, but what happens to you— what happens to you if this goes wrong?"
vi's gaze softened, but her resolve didn't waver. "i just got back," maeve continued, her voice shaking with emotion. "you just got me back. now you want to leave?"
vi didn't answer, but she could feel the way maeves fingertips lightly brushed against vi's arm, tracing the inked lines, the muscles beneath, sending goosebumps all throughout the other girls body.
maeve landed her hand in vi's, the both of them holding eachother for the comfort that they needed in the moment.
caitlyn's shaky voice spoke up. "she's right," she said, her voice heavy with regret.
"no more rogue missions. no more reckless plans. my mother was right. my arrogance led me to take on more than i could handle, and she paid the price."
a tense silence followed, but it was broken by the sound of caitlyn's voice again. "they're sending all the enforcers after jinx."
maeve stiffened, her eyes flashing with a mix of alarm and disbelief. maeves hand tensed around vi's, almost breaking her already beat up hand.
"i'm going with them," caitlyn added, her eyes searching both girls for a reaction.
vi's eyes locked on maeve, but maeves eyes were locked on caitlyn who stood infront of them. her eyebrows furrowed, the area silent but intense.
vi was determined to help. this was the one thing she could do, the one thing that would make a difference. and caitlyn could see that. "please, i have to help. we have to help."
"you can," caitlyn said, pulling something from her pocket. she handed vi a brooch case, then extended another toward maeve.
when they flipped the case open, maeve's stomach twisted. inside were enforcer badges. symbols of authority. symbols of everything she despised.
a symbol that maeve could and would never bring herself to wear.
the weight of its meaning was clear, hope depended on them, but over her dead body was she ever going to be caught wearing what her biggest enemy wore that night, seven years ago.
"as one of us," caitlyn said softly.
maeve's heart dropped. she took a step back, her voice a low growl. "over my dead fucking body."
the badge clattered to the floor, her trembling hand throwing it at the floor weakly, towards caitlyns feet. tears blurred her vision, but she refused to let them fall.
violet stared at the badge on the ground, her chest tight as she followed maeves actions, letting the badge fall from her fingers.
"i can't wear this," she murmured, stepping away from it as the weight of its meaning settled between them.
caitlyn's voice was desperate. "people are calling for blood. the council won't stop them. we can show them that not all of zaun supports jinx."
vi's shoulders slumped, but her voice remained cold as she continued to step backwards. "i watched them kill my parents, cait. do you have any idea how that feels?"
maeve was mad, the memories from that night immediately starting to flood her mind as she stared down at the badge. the engravings in it, the way the metal shines so brightly despite the dimmed atmosphere.
caitlyn's face twisted, torn between disbelief and understanding. "yes. i do." her voice cracked. her arms being thrown down beside her.
"i'm sorry about your mother, cait, i really am. but no way." she shook her head slightly, her footsteps now fading down the hallway as she walked away from them.
anger and hurt mixed in her chest. the words they had shared felt like daggers, and the badge— the symbol— was a reminder of everything she could never accept.
maeve felt the weight of something dark and uncomfortable settle over her. something was wrong. she could feel it, the storm that had been brewing in the pit of her stomach.
her fingers gripped the door handle, the cold metal biting into her skin. "fuck," she whispered, squeezing her eyes shut.
a familiar feeling of unease ran over her as she reached for the door handle. the feeling she usually got when something was about to go horribly wrong, but now that had happened, she was convinced it was nothing.
but something kept running through her head.
you need to get revenge. its wrong, its wrong, its wrong. you need to get revenge. your wrong, your wrong, your wrong.
it repeated continuously as she gripped the handle tighter and tighter.
the discomfort lingered in the air. the familiar feeling of everything immediately spiralling out of control, the feeling of knowing everything just seems to go wrong in your path, becoming clear that no matter what, nothing ever seemed to go right.
it was as if failure followed closely behind her footsteps, each and every step reinforcing the feeling that everything was meant to go wrong. and sometimes you've got to accept it.
with one final breath, maeve pulled the door open and stepped into the rain. the cold droplets hit her skin, but they didn't offer the comfort she craved. they only made her feel colder.
and still, she walked.
