▌ THE SOUND OF HEAVY BOOTS striking the rotting wood echoed through the air, each step muffled by the weight of the silence. her breath came in ragged gasps, each one a painful rupture in her chest, while cold tears streamed down her face.
"no... no," she whispered, her voice barely audible above the eerie stillness. the fog curled over the lifeless bodies scattered across the old oak bridge. her eyes skimmed over the oak bridge, shots being fired all around her as she searched and searched in despair.
everything blurred out into what seemed like static, her eyes landing on the two silhouettes that laid lifelessly next to eachother. she stumbled back as a sob left her mouth, shock washing over her as her breaths became erratic. she then stumbled forward, tripping over her feet while boots crunched against splinters, her knees scraping painfully as she dragged herself towards the two.
"mom? mom, come on!" she cried, shaking her mother's limp form, desperation clawing at her throat. "dad! dad! please!" her voice cracked as she slammed her fists against his chest, but there was no response. "no!"
a torturous scream tore from deep within her, the sound raw and deep, like it had been waiting her whole life to break free. the tears that flooded her face felt like daggers, carving paths of pain across her skin.
her body collapsed, crumpling in on itself as she fell onto her mother's chest. she pressed her hands over her heart, as if holding onto the last shred of something real, while her cries grew louder, more frantic.
her breaths were jagged, erratic, and the overwhelming sound of her sorrow drowned out everything else— the world outside her grief, the bridge beneath her feet, even the steady pulse of her own heart.
it felt as though the ground beneath her had crumbled, leaving nothing but emptiness. when she finally lifted her head, two things immediately caught her attention.
the first was the group of enforcers, standing at a distance, their eyes cold as they turned away, guns in hand. rhe sight sparked a surge of anger inside her— every ounce of anger bubbling up to the surface.
until her gaze shifted to a tall, muscular man, stood by two girls. their soft sobs filled the air, though they were quiet, as if the very act of mourning was too painful to make a sound. she saw who they were crying for. their parents.
her gaze softened as her own tears fell without restraint, but now, it felt as though all the noise had been stolen from her. the world around her seemed to fall into a heavy silence, leaving only the sounds of her ragged breaths and the distant weeping of the two children.
then the man turned his head, his eyes landing on her. the recognition in his gaze was immediate. he froze for a moment, his eyes widening as he saw her, gripping her mother's shirt with desperate fingers, her father lying lifeless by her knees, her hand gently stroking his hair.
her heart pounded, and her expression hardened. the ground beneath them shook as he took heavy steps towards her, slowly and surely, he reached the distraught girl.
his knee bent as he crouched down, still towering over her. "i've got you, maeve." the sound of her name, soft and familiar, slipped from his lips, causing a small gasp to escape hers.
she jolted slightly instinctively, her fear of the man now intense, her fingers still tightly clutching her parents, as if holding onto them could keep them from slipping away.
he extended his hand toward her, and her gaze flicked between it and his face— eyes filled with genuine concern, the quiet comfort of someone who wanted to ease her pain.
he had to mean something to her. she may not have known this man, but he knew her name, and the sorrow in his expression spoke of a connection she couldn't yet place.
with trembling hands, she bowed her head, her tears falling once more as she kissed each of her parents on their temples. her grip tightened, knuckles pale from the strength of it, as if she could keep them with her forever.
then, without warning, she let go, her arms moving instinctively toward the man, leaping into his embrace. his hand sitting in the middle of her back as he held her head.
her knees still pressed into the sharp wood, pain filling her legs as she slid over to him. but once her head fell against his chest, everything drowned out. silent tears falling once again as he held her in his embrace.
the other two girls, watching from a distance, clung to each other for comfort as they, too, navigated their shared grief. the three children, connecting without words, thats something no one should ever go through, yet it's comforting, in a way.
with one arm, the man lifted Maeve, pulling her closer. her eyes lingered on her parents as they grew smaller in the distance, their lifeless bodies swallowed by the thickening mist once more.
maeve's grip tightened on the man's shirt as he bent down. the small blue-haired girl clung to her big sister, seeking comfort as the man carried them both away in the other arm.
the pink-haired girl glanced at maeve, their eyes meeting with a shared understanding, tears threatening to spill over. it was a silent acknowledgment of the pain they both felt— pain that words couldn't capture.
together, they turned to face the bridge, each step taking them farther from the people who had meant everything to them.
their gaze shifted toward the distant, glowing silhouette of a grand building on the other side, the clear blue sky above seemed almost otherworldly, like a distant dream they could never reach, compared to the thick, toxic air of the underworld they had to endure.
the injustice of it all bit at them, a burning anger rising within the two older children. the thought of what their people had done to their families— how they could do that with no remorse— only strengthened their sense.
their gazes hardened as they silently vowed: one day, they would get their revenge. for their parents. for their people. for themselves.
