I walk through a familiar hallway, the patter of shoes and chatter up ahead being the only sounds that are audible.
I grab my art journal from my locker, slip my hoodie over my shirt and turn on my heel for home.
Then stop.
A melodic tune from the music room echoes down the hallway.
The piano notes flow like silk through fingertips, like the fluid motion of glass.
Delicate and smooth.
I look out of the window. It doesn't look so dark out yet, so I venture towards the enticing sound, that casts a spell over the steadily emptier school.
When I reach the music room, I stop at the door, which is fully ajar. Resting my form against the wall, I listen.
Out of growing curiosity, I steal a glance of the mysterious pianist from around the doorframe.
And recognise him from the year group above ours.
The boy with fluffy chestnut hair is sitting in front of the piano, his fingers running along the ivory keys in effortless motions. A light wind courses through the room, brushing the brown locks out of his face to reveal a pair of chocolatey, almond-shaped eyes that glitter like jewels.
As the wordless song reaches it's climax, his eyebrows furrow, nose scrunching in concentration.
I find a smile playing on my lips, suppressing a giggle.
When the song reaches it's end, his posture eases and he leans back slightly.
As I lean forward to get a better look, my art journal slips out of my hands, making a loud thwack on the floor. I internally facepalm.
Is this how it's gonna be, fate? Can't go a day without embarrassing me?
I frantically reach for my journal and it appears the boy has left his seat to come and help me.
Ughh, why am I like this?
He picks up some of the paper sheets in front of me.
"I'm so sorry, hah," I awkwardly manage to say.
"It's okay. I thought I was the only one here."
I glance down the vacant hallway to find the two of us are the only ones in this corridor.
Even worse. Not even Seonmi or Yeojin are here to save him from my awkwardness.
"You're really talented," I suddenly blurt out.
The boy chuckles, gummy smile forming up to his chubby cheeks as he brings a curled hand to it.
"Thank you," he simply states. He glances at the A3 journal in my hands and I can almost predict what he's going to say next.
"Can I see?"
"Um...sure. It's not that good, though."
We hold it between ourselves and as he turns to the first page, my insides curl.
He grins as he lays his eyes on the content of it.
"Sorry...i-it's a bit messy," I say, in an attempt to explain why everything is so...basic??
"You're a great artist."
Oh...oh wow. Omg, I think I love him. Haha just kidding.
Maybe a little bit.
"Thanks..."
"I'm Min Yoongi by the way."
"Park Yeona."
"I'll see you around, Yeona," he says with a wink, closing the art journal and handing it back to me.
He turns on his heel, slinging his backpack over one arm while he walks down the hall.
-----
When I reach home, I flick through my planner and check my homework for the week - Art, History and Science. Hopping onto my bed, I start with the easiest subject - Art.
I turn to the first page of my journal.
'Hope you enjoyed the mini performance ;)
-M.YG'
A sticky note reads.
How cute.
Min Yoongi is kind of cute.
----
I groggily wake up from my sleep, eyelids heavy. Pressing my hand to the side of my head, that vivid dream is still etched into my mind.
Such a beloved memory wakes me up.
And yet it hurts.
Yoongi is balled up against me, one arm slung across my waist and the other curled under his cheek.
I sit up from my position and Yoongi stirs, turning to the other side of the bed.
A beating throb at the back of my throat pounds. I get up, leaving the warmth of our bed, and stagger towards the kitchen for a glass of water.
I know I probably won't fall asleep after this, so getting an early start seems like the best option.
Sighing, I think about how I was torn from my dream and into a bittersweet reality - where he and I can barely spend three minutes together.
I sip from my glass and look out of the window. The golden sun rays play on the jade blades of grass that are speckled with droplets of rain. Vermilion hues on the tufts of coral clouds begin to disappear, giving in to a pale morning blue.
I whistle that familiar tune and notice the little pooch twirling beneath my feet.
"Hello, Holly," I say, lifting her up and nuzzling her. She softly barks while I scratch behind her ear.
I sigh, hearing Yoongi's alarm in the other room going off.
The roses from last night have still been left on the dining table, blood red petals beginning to wilt.
I slowly pull the sticky note he left off the bouquet.
'Hey babe,
Sorry I couldn't join you tonight.
I promise I'll make it up to you xx'
