7 - Friends and Enemies
When the two of them had overcome the rude receptionist, which was pretty difficult considering Hange was about to punch her in the face, they were escorted to their classroom. Thankfully, they had most of their classes together. They walked down a pristine hallway, eventually finding themselves standing in front of a typical class of twenty and introducing themselves.
"Hi, I'm Hange. I hope we can be friends!" she said with a bow.
"The name's Levi."
The whole room paused, even the teacher, waiting for Levi to say something else, but he didn't.
"You can both sit in those spaces near the window," the man at the front of the class said, with a nervous smile. This teacher had a lousy moustache, and light brown hair. He looked skittish, as though scared to be taking on a few more students. It eventually clicked that he was a cover teacher when he wrote his name on the board and dropped the chalk.
Hange sat in front of Levi, as the two of them readied themselves for the lesson ahead. Levi gazed out of the window, while Hange had made a new friend already.
"Hey, Hange. I'm Nanaba, it's nice to meet ya," she said with a wink. Her hair was styled in a pixi cut, and her eyes were a similar blue to Levi's.
"Hey Nanaba."
The lesson proceeded, with the two girls getting in trouble twice for conversing too much.
When lunchtime came, Levi kicked Hange's chair which averted her attention.
"Don't worry, Levi, I haven't forgotten about you," she reassured, cleaning her glasses.
"Tsk, you coming with me to buy lunch or what?"
Before Hange could answer, two other kids walked towards the three. One was tall and had pretty strong eyebrow game. Scratch that - he fully looked like there were two caterpillars on his forehead. The other guy kept sniffing, so Hange wondered if he was an addict or something - he was not, he just had a habit of 'figuring out people's scent'. He had dirty-blonde hair and somewhat of a stubble.
"Hange, Levi these are my friends, Erwin and Mike."
Much to Levi's surprise, they all got on like a house on fire. Halfway through lunch, Levi and Hange had figured out that Mike and Nanaba had some unspoken thing between them, while Erwin was crushing on some girl in the other class. They hadn't quite figured out her name yet."So where're you guys from?"
"I'm French...actually we both are, but we're born here," Hange explained, as she munched on a dumpling.
"OH you guys should hear my French impression!" Nanaba gasped. Erwin chuckled, choking a bit on his banana milk, while Mike mentally facepalmed. Nanaba pulled the most eccentric face, while saying "Bonjour, je m'appelle, Nanabarrr~". She rolled her 'r', which made Levi raise an eyebrow, and Hange was left, suffocating with laughter.
"Hey Nanaba!" some girl squealed, from the hallway. Nanaba rolled her eyes, then fake smiled.
"Hey Rico. Petra. " she said, her voice flat with the tone of bitterness.
"Hey Erwin" the girl said, twirling a strand of hair around her finger. Her hair was a silvery blonde and her eyes were framed by thin glasses. Erwin strained a smile, as he put down his chopsticks and ran a hand through his hair, somewhat stressfully.
"Hi, Rico."
From the energy their three new friends were radiating, this girl was extremely annoying and had a very obvious crush on Erwin.
"Introduce us to your new friends, won't you?" Rico said, her glasses glinting.
"This is Hange and Levi."
Hange awkwardly nodded her head, flashing a closed-eye smile. Levi raised a hand, in an attempt to wave, but was too lazy to complete the full action.
As the two were about to turn away from the whole scene, a boy walked up from behind the two girls. He had a dark, unkempt mop of hair and two ear piercings. His eyes were a charcoal grey, which complemented his fair skin.
"Hello ladies. Nanaba," he said, flashing each of them a wink. His voice had a sing-song quality to it, making any words that came out of his mouth come across as flirtatious.
"Brat," Nanaba scoffed, rolling her eyes and turning to look at Mike.
"And who's this lovely lady with such beautiful doe eyes?" he said, looking directly at Hange. He took her hand in his, and stroked it with his thumb.
"None of your f*cking business, you ass," Levi said, edging towards the guy.
"Hey, chill. Is that your boyfriend?" he asked, looking between Hange and Levi.
"No, he's my best friend. I'm Hange. Who are you?" she said, concealing her irritation behind a constipated smile.
"I'm Kyo. Maybe I'll see you around, Hange-san," he said, biting his lip. Hange gave a curt nod in response, not taking notice of Levi's scowl.
When Kyo left, it seemed as though Rico and Petra had followed, easing up the atmosphere for all of them.
"As you can probably tell, they're a**holes. I guess...Petra never really does anything, she just hangs out with Rico, but Rico and Kyo are the most...exasperating people to be around. Kyo does whatever he can to date every girl in the year, only to dump them afterwards and Rico's just annoying. She has the hugest crush on Erwin and makes his life a living hell everyday," Nanaba rambled, as she angrily sipped her canned black coffee. Erwin sighed, passively agreeing with everything Nanaba said.
"They even smell weird," Mike commented. The group turned to look at him and paused, then began to burst into hurls of laughter.
The next period was quiet. The teacher was boring and shouted every time a student got the question wrong, making everyone refrain from answering. His name was Mr Shadis, and he taught mathematics. One of Hange's 'confident' subjects, ruined by a shitty teacher. Pencil's scratched against the desks and zippers were heard opening and closing. Hange could only hear her own breathing, along with the whistling of the wind outside.
She glanced at Levi, behind her, who was busy writing away. He ran his hand through his hair about three times, before he caught-on that Hange was watching him.
"What do you want?" he mouthed.
"I'm bored," she mouthed back, scrunching her nose.
He rolled his eyes, then passed her a note, which read:
'The snow's settled outside.'
Hange glanced out of the window, her eyes lighting up immediately. The lenses of her glasses glistened, as she passed the note to Nanaba, who passed it to Mike, who passed it to Erwin. They'd all had the same idea, and were itching to get out of class.
