5 - Home Sweet Home

"This is your apartment. There are two rooms, as Ms Zoe specified, one kitchen and a bathroom to your far left," a woman who was showing them around instructed.

Levi looked around at the place - clearly the previous tenants hadn't cared about their home very much. He winced at the foul stench that came from the bathroom, when he opened the door.

"So your rent will be due at the end of the month. You kids on the run or something?" the woman said, as she puffed on her cigarette.
"Uh-
"With all due respect ma'am, I don't think that's any of your business," Levi cut in, with his arms folded. The woman raised her eyebrow, tripping slightly in her slingback heels.

"Alrighty then, I'll leave you kids to it," the woman said. She was older - about in her late thirties or early forties. She was dressed in sports leggings and leg warmers, with a turtleneck and an oversized denim jacket. She looked something like a personified midlife crisis, what with her extravagant hairstyle and too-heavy makeup.

"Oh, if you guys need anything, ask for Mrs Sato. That's me by the way. See ya," she said, inhaling her cigarette, then slamming the door behind her.

Hange glanced at Levi.
"Do you have to be so mean? You know she's the one giving us a roof over our heads, right?"
"Yeah, a very mouldy and disgusting roof. We're lucky tomorrow is Saturday."
"Please don't tell me we're gonna go on a cleaning rampage."
"You know it."

Hange groaned, as she threw her head back dramatically. They moved into their own rooms, setting out their belongings. Levi looked around him. The walls were bare, painted an off white, which he didn't mind. There were cupboards and cabinets for him to organise his things in and there was a TV. Someone had probably left it there because of how old it looked, but whatever. Levi changed into his pyjamas and headed to the bathroom.

Hange had already made herself at home, and she was pinning old photographs to a board on the wall. She beamed at how her room looked - it wasn't great but she could see herself living  there comfortably. She crashed onto her mattress and smiled - the giddy feeling of being free from the orphanage was still instilled in her mind. She couldn't believe she'd done it - she was starting her own life in the city, without the pressure of the headmistress, or the trapped feeling of always being in one place.

When they'd both finished their night-time routines, they slunk into their beds. It was all so unfamiliar to them. The sounds of the city outside. The hum of other families and couples living in the apartment complex. It was even a little bit scary.
Hange tossed from side-to-side in her bed, her hair now sprawled all over her pillow, as she bit down on her thumb in thought.

Levi tried to fall asleep, but he just...couldn't. He lay wide awake on the soft mattress. 'I shouldn't have had that nap on the train,' he thought, for right now he was full of beans and feeling restless.

He climbed out of his bed, with his pillow under his arm and took a deep breath in. He opened the door, with an exhale and was surprised to see Hange doing the same thing. Her open hair was messy and her glasses slipped off the bridge of her nose.

"Hey four-eyes."
"Hey shorty."

Levi slowly walked into her bedroom, his hesitation present in the slight blush on his face.
"Can't sleep either, huh?" she said, ruffling his black hair.
"Tsk, not my hair, four-eyes." Hange laughed, closing the door behind them.

"You got a TV, too?" Levi asked, eyes wide as he dropped his pillow to the floor, when he tried to switch it on.
"Wha- yours actually works!" he said, the slightest trace of surprise present in his voice. Hange grabbed a remote from the drawer beside her bed. The two of them climbed into the single bed, scooting close to each other as they watched a movie called 'The Breakfast Club'.
"Hey Levi -
"Shut up, four-eyes. I'm trying to watch the movie."
"You're so moody," she said, pulling a face.
"And you're a pain in the ass. Can you move your leg, I'm getting squashed."
"It's not my fault you're so tiny."
"Fuck off."
Hange snickered, pulling the duvet up to her neck. She glanced over at Levi, who was clearly enjoying the movie.

If this was how Hange would spend her life in the city, with him by her side, she didn't mind it one bit.
