i. encounters in the train
SEPTEMBER 1st HAD ARRIVED SOONER THAN Aurora had thought it would. The last few days of summer had been relatively the same as James and his friends had chosen to sleep over at his house until they had to go to Hogwarts.
She had complained a bunch of times when they were being too loud or had attempted to pull a prank on her. They had tried to, but her room had specific charms that had prevented anyone from ruining the state of her bedroom.
The group of boys had originally wanted to at least make her room smell like dog's poop, but it had backfired and had made the whole house aside from her bedroom smell like dog's poop. Sometimes, James forgets that Aurora's at the top of their year.
Now the Potter Twins and their mother, as well as all of James's friends, had already flooed to Platform 9 3/4 and were now saying their farewells to each other.
"James, honey, please try not to pull those little gimmicks in school. I can't take another owl from Professor McGonagall." The boy had grinned cheekily at his mother, kissing her cheek swiftly before dragging his friends on the train.
"Sorry mum, no promises!"
Euphemia sighed in disdain, fully knowing he would still pull the pranks he makes regardless of what she says. The woman then looked at her daughter, a smile making an appearance on her face. Euphemia moved towards Aurora and pulled the girl into a hug. "Aurora dear, have fun this year. And please don't focus too much on your studies."
The brunette girl chuckled at her mother, wrapping her arms around the woman's shoulder. "Sorry mum, no promises on that one."
Euphemia giggled a bit at that, pushing her daughter away by the shoulders. The woman smiled softly at her, caressing her cheek with a brush of her thumb.
"Write to us ok? At least once a week."
Aurora smiled at her mother in response, taking hold of her mother's hands and bringing them down. "I will mum. Stay safe alright?"
The woman nodded as a response and slightly shoved the brunette girl towards the train with a small smile. Aurora had gotten the hint, giving her mother a tiny smile back before walking towards the train with a small wave.
Once inside, Aurora had immediately made her way to the Prefect's Compartment, not bothering to meet up with her two friends as she knew that both men would most likely bicker and not acknowledge her.
Before she could open the door to the compartment, however, a familiar blonde girl had opened the door to the compartment right beside it and had bumped into her on accident. Aurora would have ignored it, if she hadn't noticed who had bumped into her.
It seemed the blonde had also realized who she had accidentally hit as a smirk grew on her rosy lips. "Well well well, if it isn't my favorite Ravenclaw. Don't you look dashing today."
The Potter girl held in a scoff, adjusting her handbag on her shoulder with a straight face. "Malfoy, always a pleasure to see you."
Leora Malfoy snickered at her reply, looking the girl up and down.
You could say that Aurora felt, uncomfortable whenever she was with the pureblood. With that analyzing gaze and that devilish smirk that played on her lips, who wouldn't?
"Leo that's enough, stop pestering the girl." A brunette had come out of the compartment, one with a gentle look in her eyes and a pout on her soft lips. Aurora had recognized the girl, seeing her everywhere the Malfoy was.
The brunette girl turned towards her with an apologetic smile as she tucked a strand of her hair back in its place. "I'm sorry for her, Aurora, she's just really really interested in you for some reason."
And that had seemed to be the case. Ever since both girls had bumped into each other at the library somewhere during their 3rd year, Leora had been getting on her nerves with just her presence and her snarky comments towards the Potter girl.
The Malfoy rolled her eyes at her friend, crossing her arms over her chest and leaning on her left foot, the smirk still plastered on her face. "Oh please Sadie, our Queenie over here doesn't mind. Do you, Potter?"
If looks could kill, Leora would have already dropped dead the instant their eyes met. But instead, she had stood her ground, meeting Aurora's chocolate brown eyes with a storm brewing in her electric blue eyes. You could already feel the tension between the two girls, like a thunderstorm against a blizzard.
The two, however, were interrupted by someone clearing their throat, effectively stopping them from their staring contest. Aurora had been the one to break the contact, opting to back down instead of causing a fight in the middle of the hallway.
Ray had been the one to interrupt their encounter, already in his robes and his Prefect badge glinting right at them. Aurora had been confused when she had seen the badge, not knowing that he had been given the honor of being a Prefect.
"Ladies, if you would excuse me, I need to take Rory away from this... staring contest. Goodbye now."
With that, the Ravenclaw boy had grabbed his friend's shoulder, leading her away from the Slytherin-Hufflepuff duo.
Rory had her signature straight face on as Ray pulled her into the Prefect's Compartment. Thankfully, no one had arrived yet except for the Head Boy and Head Girl, who had not commented on their arrival.
Ray tugged his brunette friend down to their assigned seats, motioning for her to sit down. She had obliged, of course, still looking as stoic as ever. The Ravenclaw boy rolled his eyes, not buying the fact that she did not react to the encounter earlier.
"Come on Rora, tell me what happened." With the gentle yet stern tone he used, Aurora couldn't keep her facade. So with that, she had shared with the boy what had happened in the encounter.
After she had recounted her story, Ray had sighed heavily, adjusting the way he sat before looking at his hands that had rested on the table. "Honestly Rory, I don't understand why you think she's bad or something. Everyone has those sides in them you know."
The brunette rolled her eyes at her friend, adjusting the badge that sat on her the left side of her chest.
"You wouldn't be saying that if you had to experience her ridiculous nicknames and the annoying things she tells me."
"She may be snarky and has a knack for annoying you, but there should be a reason she's friends with Adrianna of all people. That girl is known for her judgment."
And that was true. Adrianna Greengrass was known for being the sweetest and most optimistic human being in Hogwarts. Despite her personality, she had always been friends with one person, Leora.
Leora Malfoy was known to be Lucius Malfoy's younger sister, and the Slytherin Princess. She had eyes that had haunted people's thoughts and her words that poisoned people's minds. She was the perfect Slytherin if Aurora was being honest.
Shaking her head, Aurora rid herself of those thoughts as Ray asked her about her Quidditch position. "Speaking of, Rory are you going to quit Quidditch now? Since your a Prefect now."
Aurora hadn't thought about that. The thought of being a Prefect was enough for her. The brunette glanced at her friend, whose eyes were already on her as he waited for her answer.
After thinking for a minute or two, Aurora was about to reply to his question but had been interrupted by the sound of the compartment door opening. The two of them had looked towards the door, eyes meeting with different people with the same Prefect badge as them, however they were different colors.
But Aurora's eyes weren't on the badges, they were on the familiar soft emerald eyes that had also stared back at hers. Both girls had a mixture of surprise in their eyes but the girl, who seemed to be the new Gryffindor Prefect, had a mixture of shock and something the Potter girl couldn't quite place her finger on.
The red-haired girl mumbled something softly to herself, not going unnoticed by her fellow Gryffindor Prefect. As the words left her lips, Remus Lupin had looked at her in confusion, trying to follow where she was looking at.
"It's her..."
