Chapter 1

Vienna Woods wasn't anything special. She was just a normal girl with normal curly brown hair and a skinny frame, barely two inches over the five feet mark. And yet she was a very feisty young lady. It was no wonder she and Steve became immediate friends.

She'd seen him standing up to a bunch of bullies before getting punched in the face. She'd immediately jumped in action, kicking their shins as any ten year old would do, accidentally punching one of them in the jaw. Thankfully, Bucky had swooped in and the bullies had immediately scampered off, leaving the three kids laughing at them.

Since then, they'd become inseparable. They did everything together. They even wanted to join the army together.

Unfortunately, Vienna and Steve didn't meet the right criteria. They even gave Vienna some strange or haughty looks. Which she blatantly chose to ignore, lest she punch them in the face.

This time, she hoped it would be different. She was sitting on a bench, pressed against Steve and another guy, both reading the paper. Vienna, however, was too nervous for that, her leg bouncing up and down rapidly. Her amber chestnut hair pulled up in a tight ponytail and wearing a white tank top.

She exhaled slowly when the man called Steve's name, knowing she was next.

"Rogers, Steven," a man called, and Steve folded his newspaper before going to stand in line.

"Woods, Vienna," another man called.

Vienna stood up and hurried in line. She caught Steve's eye, who gave her a confident smile. She hesitantly returned it, wishing she could have his confidence. She wasn't really a nervous person, but she knew that they might not take her. Which is why she had lied on her form. And she really hoped they wouldn't call her out.

The doctor opened her file. "So, Woods," he drawled out, glancing up at her. "How'd your mother die?"

It rolled off her tongue without any second thought. "She was a nurse. Got shot in '18 and died three years later of lead poisoning."

"Your father?"

"Still alive, sir," she replied. "He's schizophrenic."

"ADHD?" he asked, muttering under his breath.

Vienna held her breath, hope sparking in her chest, even though she knew what was on her file. ADHD. High blood pressure. Hemophilia.

"I'm sorry," the doctor said, closing her file before taking off his glasses and wiping them with his coat. "But we can't take you."

"Please, sir," she pleaded.

"No can do. Hemophilia is a serious problem. Even without it, the other medical issues would make it hard to get in. I'm very sorry, but we can't take you." The doctor pulled out the dreaded stamp and slammed it on her file.

4F. She hated that.

She sighed and walked over to Steve, defeated.

"4F?" he asked.

She nodded. "I hate hemophilia. There's no way I'll ever join the army!"

He wrapped a reassuring arm around her shoulders. "We'll just have to try again," he comforted her. "How 'bout we go see a movie?"

She mustered a small smile. "Sure."

After they got dressed, the duo made their way down the streets towards the nearest cinema. they had no idea what we were watching, but that didn't matter just then. They just paid for their tickets and took their seats as the movie started playing.

The Nazi flag with the large swastika in the middle appeared on the screen. Vienna frowned. She hated that flag. Music started playing in the background as the narrator began talking.

"war continues to ravage Europe," he said as scenes defiled before their eyes. "But help is on the way. Every able-bodied young man is lining up to serve his country."

Vienna stuck her tongue out, making Steve laugh quietly.

An image of a young boy appeared. "Even Timmy is doing his part collecting scrap metal." The camera zoomed out to show a group of children collecting metal from a mountain of discarded items. "Nice work, Timmy!"

"Who cares?!" some loud jerk screamed out.

Vienna exhaled slowly, trying to keep herself calm, but he went on.

"Play the movie already!"

"Hey, you want to show some respect?" Steve whispered to the jerk.

He glanced over at Vienna, shaking his head.

"Meanwhile, overseas, our brave boys are showing the Axis powers that the price of freedom is never too high," the narrator went on.

"Let's go!" the jerk kept hollering. "Get on with it!"

Vienna clenched her fists. "Hey, fat-head," she called quietly. "I don't know if it's ever dawned on you, but you're not the center of the universe."

He scowled at her, but kept on yelling. "Hey, just start the cartoon!"

Steve and Vienna exchanged exasperated looks before Steve sat forward.

"Hey, you wanna shut up?" he called, a bit louder than Vienna.

The jerk stood up while the movie kept reeling behind him.

"You're blocking the view," Vienna said, feeling smart. "Sit down."

The look he gave the duo was enough to slightly intimidate them, though Vienna was not one to back down.

Vienna suddenly stood up. "Whatever," she said, grabbing Steve's arm. "This isn't worth it," she whispered to him. "We're leaving."

Steve nodded numbly and Vienna guided her friend down the seats and up the carpeted aisle. In truth, she knew the jerk would try to corner them once the movie was over. She'd rather avoid another fight, especially since she knew she couldn't hurt herself. Steve and Bucky would reprimand her for being careless again.

They left the theater, but the jerk suddenly threw the doors open, grabbed Steve by the collar and pulled him down an alley.

"That's it," Vienna muttered, rolling the sleeves of her button-down shirt and marching over.

"Hey!" she called as the guy threw the first punch.

He ignored her, which made her feel that much more mad.he shoved Steve down against a stack of trash cans. Vienna pounced on his back and wrapped her legs around his waist. She liked to use her short demeanor in ways that benefit her. She started throwing punches at the guy, who managed to shove her off his back.

The jerk landed another punch on Steve, who quickly picked himself up and tried to protect himself with the lid of a trash can. It didn't even faze the jerk who just punched him again.

"You just don't know when to give up, do ya?" he asked.

"That's a problem with us," Vienna said, kicking his legs, making the guy wince before throwing her back down.

"I can do this all day," Steve panted.

Vienna stood up, about to jump back on the guy when a hand landed on her shoulder. She looked up and her face lit up when she saw Bucky smiling at her. He held up his index finger before walking over to the guy and grabbing his shoulder roughly.

"Hey," he said, making his voice deeper. "Pick on someone your own size."

The guy tried to land a punch, but Bucky avoided it easily and punched him square in the jaw, making him pivot and stumble back, before literally kicking his butt out of the alley.

He turned back to the two.

"Sometimes, I think you like getting punched," he told Steve, helping Vienna up. "Are you okay?" he asked quietly, looking for scratches.

Vienna shook him off. "Fine."

"I had him on the ropes," Steve defended himself.

"Sure you did," Vienna said, smirking slightly.

Bucky sighed and picked up Steve's paper. "How many times is this?" He unfolded it and read it. "Oh, you're from Paramus, now?"

Vienna walked over, handing Bucky hers, knowing he would want to look it over, too.

"You know it's illegal to lie on the enlistment form," he told the both of them.

Vienna sighed. "Yes, we know. It's not like you told us five hundred times."

He smirked, ruffling her hair. "And seriously?" he asked again. "Jersey?"

Steve finally finished dusting himself and looked up at Bucky, pausing. "You get your orders?" he asked.

"The 107th," he told them. "Sergeant James Barnes. Shipping out for England the first thing tomorrow."

"Great," Vienna muttered, kicking the dirt, shoving her hands in her coat pockets. "And we can't go with you."

Steve scoffed. "I should be going."

Bucky glanced at the two of them before breaking in a wide grin. "Come on, guys." He pulled them close to him, swinging his arms over their shoulders. "My last night!"

He quickly let go of Steve, wiping his hand. "Got to get you two cleaned up."

Vienna laughed, though her heart felt heavy.

"Why?" Steve asked. "Where are we going?"

Bucky handed them the newspaper he was holding and the two unfolded it.

"The future," Bucky said.

Vienna rolled her eyes when she saw the picture. "Well that's a load of crap."

Bucky ruffled her hair, much to her dismay. "Come on," he said. "It'll be fun!"

Vienna laughed. "Oh, sure, Mister Ladies' Man."

"Ah!" Bucky exclaimed, throwing his arms open wide. "It'll be great. And you don't even have to wear a dress."

"Thank God," Vienna sighed in relief.

Bucky laughed again, soon joined by Vienna and Steve.
