Chapter II | Owen Grady

~¤~

Emily walked passed the crew members and towards a large enclosure where her favorite dinosaurs are, The Velociraptors. She wasn't there for their birth, but she would visit them from time to time.
She walk up the catwalk to see her favorite person in the world, Owen Grady. The Alpha of the Velociraptor pack. Starting his training with his four Velociraptor females named Blue, Delta, Echo, and Charlie. Blue was Emily's favorite, not because of her metallic blue stripes going down to from her eye to her tails. It was because she would be hardheaded at times but very loyal to her sisters and Owen.

" Okay!" he yelled out, pressing a clicker to get their attention. Owen notice Blue wasn't looking up like her other sisters, "Blue?" he called out for her, aggressively pressing the clicker. "Blue!" he called out again, earning a screech of annoyance from her as he finally look up. "Watch it." he scold at her, as if she was a teenager.

Emily giggled, "Ignore him, Blue. His date stood him up." she said. Owen look at her, "That's not true!" he said. Emily snickered while Blue let out a screech, almost to say 'Hello!' then the other girls started to get aroused as Owen clicked his clicker, "Charlie. Hey! Don't give me that shit! Delta! Lock it up!" finally all four Velociraptors were calmed and looking up at Owen, "Good! And we're moving."

Emily followed Owen as the four Raptors followed their Alpha towards where the catwalk had a hanging bucket, Owen still clicking his clicker as he exclaimed "That's good. That is damn good." he then picked up a frozen dead rat. "Charlie, that's what you get!" he then threw the rat at Charlie who snatch it, he did the same for Echo and Delta until Blue was the last one. "Blue? This one's for you." he then threw the rat as she catch it and ate it whole.

"Hold!" he raises his hand up, "Eyes up!" he commanded as the Velociraptor lifted their heads up. "Go." the Raptors did what they're told and ran off on the other side of the paddock, Emily clapped her hands at him as Owen brought her into a hug. "Good job, better than last time." she congratulate him.
Barry then walks up to the two, he chuckled and hugged Owen "You finally did it, man."

Then a man named Vic Hoskins walked up to the three, chuckling. "Owen. I was starting to think I hired the wrong guys, but, damn, you got them eating out of your palm."

"You came on a good day. It's not usually a happy ending." Owen replied with a stiff smile, already annoyed by the man but shake his hand.

"Is that why you're not sending in your reports?" Vic questioned him.

"We've been busy." Barry replied.

"Not too busy to cash your paychecks." Vic playfully said, pretending to punch Barry in the stomach. He then notice Emily right next to Owen, "Ah, Emily Blake. I haven't seen you in a while, hopefully working on my dinosaur?"

Emily rolled her eyes, even though she's been working with The Indominus Rex ever since it was a few months old. It still belong to The Park.
"Yes, sir." she answered.

"What do you need, buddy?" Owen asked Vic.

"A field test." Vic replied, Owen scoffed and walked away. Vic followed him and then explain, "Hey. I've just seen they can respond to commands. We need to take the research and get it on its feet.

"These are wild animals, Hoskins. Trust me, you DON'T want them in the field." Owen told Vic, he continue his walk on the catwalk. Vic continue to follow him like a lost puppy, "I just saw a bond. A real bond. Between man and beast." he stopped in front of Owen, preventing him to go any further.
"You're in his way." Emily told him.

"Come on. We're the same. We're dogs of war. We know that the military needs to reduce casualties. Some people think that robots are the future. Look, nature gave us the most effective killing machines 75 million years ago. And now we know they can take orders."

Barry walks in the conversation, "We finally make progress and that's the first thing he says? Make a weapon?"

"Shit. Come on, gents. It's grown-up time. Drones can't search tunnels and caves. And they're hackable. The minute a real war breaks out, all that fancy tech is gonna go dark." Vic told him while letting the three follow them.

"Um you mean 'Lady and Gents'." Emily corrected him, Owen held back a snicker.

"But that tech's not gonna eat them if they forget to feed it." Owen pointed out.

Vic then pointed to The Raptors, "Look at these creatures. They've got millions of years of instinct in their cells, instinct that we can program. Their loyalty cannot be bought. These guys are gonna run straight into the enemy's teeth and eat them, belt buckle and all."

"Then what if they decide they wanna be in control?" Emily questioned Vic.

"Well, then we remind them who is. We terminate the rogues. Promote only loyal bloodlines." Vic replied, Owen started to chuckle. "What? What's so funny?"

Owen shook his head, "I don't know. You come here and you don't learn anything about these animals except what you want to know. You made them, and now you think you own them."

"Oh, but we do own them. Extinct animals have no rights." Vic said with a scoff.

Emily decided to chime in, "They're not extinct anymore, Hoskins."

Vic went on to explain, "Exactly. We're sitting on a goldmine and Masrani is using it to stock a petting zoo. He just wants to teach people some humility. He doesn't make weapons. You think that the eighth richest man in the world is only into oil, telecom, and family fun parks? He's so diversified, he doesn't even know what he owns. "

"How long has InGen been practicing this pitch?" Owen ask him, grabbing a bucket while walking downstairs.

Since the day we hired you out of the Navy. You knew the end game. These animals can replace thousands of boots on the ground. How many lives would that save?" Owen quickly shut the bars after Emily walked inside with him, keeping Vic out. "War is part of nature. Look around, Owen. Every living thing in this jungle is trying to murder the other. Mother Nature's way of testing her creations. Refining the pecking order. War is a struggle. Struggle breeds greatness. Without that, we end up with places like this, charge seven bucks a soda."

"Do you even hear yourself when you talk?" Owen asked him.

"This is gonna happen. With or without you boys." Vic eyed Emily, who stare down at the man. "...And girl. Progress always wins, man."

Then, somebody yelled out. "Pig loose! Pig loose!" one of the new intern went to grabbed it, but Echo manage to grabbed the pig. Sending the man falling into the paddock, catching the attention of Blue and Delta.
"Oh shit!" Emily cursed as she saw the Raptor eyeing the man, hungrily. Owen pressed the gate button, he then runs inside. "Owen no!" Barry cried, two rangers appeared ready to fire at The Raptors.

Owen puts his hand up, "Oh no, no, hold your fire!" he then approaches the Velociraptors. "Hold your fire, do not fire!" Barry then opens the gate and retrieves the new intern, "Put 12 amps in these animals, they're never gonna trust me again."

Owen then eyed Blue, "Blue, stand down. Stand down." he told her calmly. Blue snarled and snapped at Owen, "Hey, hey! What did I just say?" he told her, he then look at Delta. " Delta, I see you. Back up." Delta hissed at him. "Okay, good. Good. Charlie? Stay right there. Good."
He then tells Barry, "Close the gate."

"Are you crazy?!" Barry yelled out.

"Just trust me." Owen yelled out.

"Close the gate, Dammit!" Emily yelled at Barry, Barry reluctantly close the gate. Owen then bolted off with The Raptors close behind him, he rolls just in time for the gate to close while the girls rammed their heads at the gate bars. Emily helped him up while saying, "You almost gave me a damn heart attack."
Owen chuckled, "I'm okay. Yeah." he then turns to The Intern, "You're the new guy, right?"

The Intern nodded.

"You ever wonder why there was a job opening?" The Intern shook his head, "Hey. Don't ever turn your back to the cage." Owen then left The Intern, who turn his head to see Delta snarling at him through the bars.

Two hours later, Emily went inside Spartan's paddock. She leaned up against the door and breathed out a breath, "What a day." she breathed out. She then heard a chuff, she chuckled when she saw Spartan emerging from the foliage. "Well, at least there's one good thing happening today." she said with a chuckle, handing him a chunk of red meat. "I get to spend my break with you." she told The Indominus, scratching his scales.

Spartan let out a grumble in agreement, Emily hummed "Maybe one day, we should run away from here." she told him.

Spartan let out a snort in agreement.

One day.
