James walked into his bedroom with his shoulders slumped forward out of being extremely exhausted. He yawned widely then collapsed onto the bed, face first. He didn't bother changing into something more comfy nor did he take his shoes off.
You are paying a visit to your parents for the week because your mother has fallen ill. James, your husband, is taking care of your six year old son. You would have taken him with you but he has school to attend.
James had a rough day today. Your son had got into a fight with the grade bully, it wasn't his fault thankfully. You were horrified to hear the news that your baby boy was slightly injured, that too for some stupid reason. But he punched the bully in the nose and ran to his teacher to tell her.
James had to run about at school, talking to various people about the incident then having a quarrel with the bully's parents. He felt slighty intimidated because you weren't there to back him up.
He was glad to come back home early in the afternoon. Your son was happier because he got to miss the rest of the school day.
James pulled himself to the pillows and hugged them. He turned onto his side and pulled the covers over his body after kicking his shoes off his feet-
THUMP!
His eyes darted open and he looked to the door that was ajar, with a beam of light shining into the room. Once he heard no sound again, he shut his eyes and went back to slowly falling asleep.
KNOCK! KNOCK!
"Daddy?" A light voice squeaked, followed by feet scurrying towards the bed. James let out a long breath then opened his eyes.
"What's wrong love?" He furrowed his eyebrows and lifted his head up. Your son approached the edge of the bed and started playing with his father's hands.
"I had a badmare," He mumbled and James rubbed his face before sitting up and leaning his back against the back frame. Your son has been calling nightmares 'badmares' since he was little after hearing the two words separately being mentioned by you in sentence.
[y/s/n] jumped onto the bed and looked to the ground. "What was your badmare about sweetheart?" James asked while pulling him onto his lap and rubbing his back.
As he told the events of the dream, where a big monster threatened to take his mom and dad away from him and murder all his friends, James struggled to keep his eyes open. He felt a major migraine starting and he placed [y/s/n] on the floor.
"Alright son, let's go to your room," He said and hoped that walking a little would wake him up. Your son held onto his hand tightly as they made their way to his bedroom.
Jams switched on the lights and took in a deep breath. He sat at the end of the bed and tucked the son in after he lay down. James rubbed his face and-
"Daddy are you okay?" [y/s/n] asked and he smiled softly.
"Daddy's just tired love."
"Do you miss mummy?"
"Of course I miss mummy. I love her so much," James smiled softly then ran a hand through his son's hair, "Now I'm going to tell you a secret story about how one man saved the day from all the monsters."
"Can this man help me fight my monster?"
"Definitely, this man always helps small boys who are in trouble," He responded, "Are you ready for my special secret?"
"Yes daddy, please!"
*****
James took off his shirt from over his head and placed it on a chair. He stretched his arms then switched off the lights in his bedroom. He walked closer to the chair then started to unbuckle his belt and slip out off his pants. He placed those on top of the shirt.
Standing in his boxers, James walked to his bed and burried himself under the covers quickly to fight off the cold wind blowing through the open window. He hugged himself tight and shut his eyes to-
BUZZZ!
He squinted his eyes at the searing light illuminating the room from the vibrating phone screen on the bed side table. James picked it up and widened his eyes with a hint of gladness eye he saw your name on the screen.
"Hello?" James asked groggily.
"Hi baby! Did I... You sound sleepy," You responded and you heard him breathe heavily.
"Yeah I was sleeping."
"I'm so sorry sweetie, I just saw your message and-"
"No worries, I love hearing your voice," He smiled softly and ran a hand through his hair, "Today was hectic. [y/s/n] made me really run around school."
"I wish I was there to help out, I fee so bad about it."
James frowned and there was an awkward pause in the conversation. "So how's mum?" he asked and you took in a deep breath.
"She's better and I'm less... Frightened now."
"Take it easy love, it'll be all fine."
"So what are you doing now?"
"Laying down, unclothed-"
"Unclothed?!"
James laughed wholeheartedly, "Okay I exaggerated a bit there. I'm wearing my usual go-to sleepwear choice."
"Oh and now I really wish I was there right now!" You giggled and he shut his eyes with a smile on his lips. Your voice soothed him.
"By the way, [y/s/n] had a badmare about a monster who wanted to take him away from his family," James explained, "And then I told him a story about a man with special mind powers who fights off enemies."
You smiled widely and he chuckled. "Basically, our five year old knows the plot of the next X-Men film," He said and you laughed.
"He better not leak anything!"
Silence fell upon the two of you once again and you sighed. "Alright baby, you should sleep," You said and teased, "Sweet dreams and don't stop thinking about me."
"I can never stop thinking about you," James smirked then bid you farewell.
He ended the fall then placed his phone on the side table.
