So basically May had Samantha when she was really young and she wasn't ready to be a mother. She gave the baby up for adoption. Years down the line Samantha searches for her parents and finds out that May took Peter in. She was hurt. Her own mother gave her away, just to replace her with some other kid.

"He had nobody." May argued

Tears brimmed Samantha's eyes, "Neither did I!"

They eventually worked out their differences and Samantha lived with Peter and May. Sometimes though, there are moments where May wishes she was in Sam's life at a younger age.
