Wednesday. A relaxed school day with subjects that I like and that I don't like.
Ethics. Actually, I don't like this subject because it's boring, but I'm in on the subject of sexuality and love. To be honest, I was looking forward to the last lesson, i.e. ethics, all day long because it was a topic that should be addressed.
βWhat is wrong with you?β, John asked me as I was clicking the pen the whole time.
Normally I never looked forward to a subject, whether it was my favorite subject or not. But now? The topic was interesting and I was even able to have a say in the conversation.
βNothing I'm just looking forward to ethics. It's weird, I know but it's an interesting topic.β, I said to him and straightened my tie.
I made them too tight. And not even retying them now makes no sense since it was the last lesson. John just smiled.
βI think it's good that you're interested in something.β, he said.
I agreed with his statement with a nod. There weren't really many topics that I found interesting. But talking about sexuality was important in my opinion.
After a few minutes then Mr. Reid came in the classroom on time for the start of class. So the lesson began.
βCan someone explain to me what bisexual means?β, he asked, examining the class.
There were always those who didn't listen, who didn't care and those who were interested like me. I stretched out my arm. I signed up for ethics. What happened to me?
βYes Maddison?β
βBisexual means being attracted to both genders. One loves men and women.β, I replied and Mr. Reid gave me an appreciative nod.
βThat's right.β, he said and wrote what I had said on the blackboard.
I wrote it down because I was sure that we would write a test on it in two weeks. Also, I wanted to write. No idea where that came from, but who cares. After that was done, I looked up from my pad and straight into Tiffany's face as she sat in front of me. A big grin was on her face.
She leaned a little towards me and whispered: βSo a lesbian? You are not only a whore but also a disgrace.β
My heart clenched at the word disgrace. I didn't care that she called me a whore because it wasn't true in any way. It was more like her. Tiffany had often slept with guys just to make Roger jealous. Or she made out with random guys in front of him but he never cared. Or at least that's what it looked like.
βThen that's the way it is. But I'm not a slut who can be fucked by any guy. That's where we differ.β, I whispered back, concentrating on the lesson again.
I heard her gasp and I was proud of myself. Without paying any more attention to her, I followed the lesson. It's not often that I'm interested in a topic in ethics.
βDoes anyone have any idea why homophobia is still a big issue today?β, Mr. Reid asked the class and immediately the arms went up in the air.
Among other things, Tiffany's. I'm really curious what she has to say but because of her attempted insult I assume it can't be good. Tiffany wasn't stupid, but she had her own world view. And everything that didn't fit into this worldview, she simply ignored it.Β
βBecause it's disgusting when two men or two women kiss. You would have to slaughter them all.β, she said proud of herself and her answer.
I wanted to hit her. But I didn't so it because I didn't want to do detention on Friday. John and I just gave each other the same disparaging look. How can you say that? Just because two men love each other doesn't make them any different. They are still human. I answered again and Mr. Reid looked pleased that I was participating in the class.
βMost people don't like it when two men or two women kiss in public. They think they're different because they love their own gender but that's bullshit. Love is Love no matter who you're attracted to. Homophobia is a difficult topic.β, I said and looked at Tiffany.
I know that she didn't give a damn about other people. She is too selfish for that. But she should know that I meant her with "Most people". John also raised his hand.
βWe should respect everyone. It doesn't matter what skin color or sexuality someone has.β, he said and I nodded in agreement.
Everyone should be respected no matter where they came from or who they loved. Mr. Reid was about to say something but the school bell cut him off. Our teacher just smiled.
βWe'll talk more about that next week. Have a nice day.β, he said and that was the end of the lesson for today.
