24.) Where Should Eri Go?

Hibiki has made her decision and calls up her parents to tell them she's coming over and wants to talk with them. She's on her way there now.

She's silent as she enters her old home and heads to the dining room where her parents are. She manages to scare them as usual but not intentionally. She sits down as they watch her with a bit of worry upon seeing her serious face.

"What did you want to talk with us about, Hibiki?" mom, Michiko, asks.

"Yeah, is everything alright?" dad, Masahiko, asks.

"Yeah, everything's fine. I... just wanted to ask you something."

"Go on, hun," mom encourages.

"Do you think I'd do a good job at raising a kid?"

They both blink at her.

Mom gasps, looking to her daughter's stomach. "Are you pregnant?!"

"Fatgum?" dad growls.

"No! No! I'm not pregnant!" she chuckles. "Not pregnant."

"Then why are you asking this question?" mom asks, placing a hand on her husband's arm to calm him.

Hibiki begins to nervously fiddle with her fingers. "You... didn't answer my question."

"Ah, that's right," mom says and smiles. "I think you'd be an amazing mother, Hibiki. You're one of the top five heroes, a wonderful aunt, an awesome older sister, and a teacher. I think you're more than qualified to be a successful mother." She cups her daughter's cheek with her left hand and gently lifting it up. "Now, can you answer my question?"

"I'm sure you've seen from the news about what happened with the Shie Hassaikai."

"Yes, but I don't understand what that has to do with you being a mother?" dad questions, crossing his arms.

"The center of the whole deal was about a little girl. Her name is Eri, and she's six years old. The leader, Chisaki Kai, his quirk is basically able to completely destroy something then return it back. He used his quirk on Eri to kill her then bring her back to life over and over and over."

Mom gasps as dad's crossed arms visibly tense up in anger.

"Oh, the poor girl..." mom murmurs.

"He needed her blood to create the quirk erasing drug. She accidentally killed her father when her quirk manifested. That made her mother view her as a monster and abandoned her to her father, Eri's grandfather, who is the true leader of the Shie Hassaikai, but he is in a coma that he likely won't ever wake from." She tightens her hands into fists. "I want to help this little girl see that life isn't awful. I-I want to adopt her. Do you think that's a good idea?" She looks at them with a determined expression.

The two remain speechless, glancing at each other and already knowing their answer.

"I've always wanted another girl in the family," mom says.

"Does that–"

"It sounds like a great idea, Hibiki," dad says, nodding. "When can we meet her?"

"I'll see if you can next time I can see her." She stands up and hugs them. "Thank you."

Some of the UA staff is in a meeting room, discussing what should be of Eri. They've already decided that she would be in their care, under the watch of Aizawa if something were to happen.

"I want to adopt her," Hibiki speaks up confidently and in middle of Nezu speaking.

"What?" Aizawa replies, turning to her, not sure if he was hearing her correctly.

"You said that she doesn't have any relatives, and if she's going to stay at UA anyway, why don't I adopt her?"

"Are you sure you're up for that, Hibiki?" Nezu asks.

"I've been thinking about this a lot actually. I even talked with my parents about it. They would love that. I'm 29 years old. She could actually be my daughter. I could've had plenty of my own kids by now, but I'm not at that point." She turns to Cementoss. "You're able to remake a floor in the faculty dorms, correct?"

"Yes, as long as it doesn't interfere with any main supports," he answers.

"Aizawa is the main reason for why she's at this school in the first place, and we are on the same floor." She looks to Aizawa. "If it's okay with you, I was thinking of making our two rooms into one. A small apartment of sorts. I even drew up blueprints for how to rearrange the space. I've factored in myself and Eri to my room, your cats, and yourself."

He blinks. "That... would be okay with me. Let me see your blueprints."

She grins, pulling her phone from her pocket and pulling up her pictures. Cementoss and Aizawa move to her, and she turns the phone to the two.

Cementoss hums, looking at the details. "I would be able to do this. Easy."

"And I figure once Eri is older and can control her quirk, she can have her own room later. Anyway, this way Aizawa and I can get to each other quickly in case Eri loses control at any given time."

Taishiro and Hibiki are out on a date because she wanted to tell him of her important decision. They decide on a cute owl café because both of them have wanted to go. The owl café is a large warehouse sized jungle, big enough for all the owls to fly around and interact with people if they want to. Tables are strewn everywhere for people to sit. The whole place is typically always crowded.

The couple manage to get a table, telling the waitress their order as soon as they're ready.

"So, what is it you wanted to talk about?" Taishiro asks.

"There's been a big discussion on where Eri is going to stay," Hibiki says, looking to her hands nervously. "I've already discussed it with my parents and the faculty of UA." She looks up at him. "I just thought that you should know, since we're dating and everything, that I've decided to adopt her."

He blinks then gives a big toothy smile. "That's great!" He moves around the table and engulfs her in a hug. "This is great news! This means I'll get to see her more, right?"

Hibiki laughs. "I would assume so."

"It's nice to see you again," Aizawa says, lightly bowing to the Noizu heads.

"You as well, Shota," mom says.

Today's the day that Hibiki is letting Eri have a big decision. Going to ask the big question. After all, this isn't just Hibiki's decision that's going to change her life. She wants to make sure Eri is okay with this. Hibiki has also decided to bring her parents along to meet their hopefully future granddaughter.

"Is she awake?" Echo asks, her hero suit covering her from head to toe. She's been Echo since she left the house. Can't let anyone see her here without suit.

"Just had lunch a little while ago," Aizawa answers. "This way."

He leads the family to Eri's hospital room. He stops right outside the door, gesturing for her to enter first.

"I'll call you two in when I'm ready, okay?" Echo says.

"You do what you need to, dear," mom says.

She enters the room as Aizawa leans on the door.

"Hi, Erichan," Echo greets the girl.

Eri perks up, seeing Echo. "Echo-san."

"Hey, Erichan." Echo pulls up a chair to sit beside Eri's bed, releasing her hero suit into her bracelets.

Eri watches in awe before looking at Hibiki's face. The pro heroine giggles a bit at her surprised reaction. Eri has only seen her in her hero suit when she visits, so she wasn't expecting to see her face.

"Ah, you're so... pretty... Ah! You have hair like mine!"

Hibiki smiles, already loving this little girl. "Thank you, Erichan. I... I've come to have a serious talk with you. I wanted to ask you something very important. It's a big decision, and I'll give you a little time to answer it. You can say yes or no. I just wanted to ask you if it was okay first."

Eri nods her little head. "Okay..."

"Do you know what an orphanage is?"

"No."

"An orphanage is a place where kids go who don't have a family. A child may go there because their parent didn't want them or they have no family members to take care of them or maybe their family was killed."

"Am... Am I going to go to an orphanage?"

"No, you aren't," Hibiki says. "Usually someone like you would, but we promised that we would protect you, and we are. Let me ask you another question. Do you know what adopt means?"

Eri shakes her head no. "I don't."

"Adopt basically means someone takes in a child to raise as their own. A child who doesn't have a family. Usually, someone would adopt a child from an orphanage and become their parent."

She tilts her head. "What are... parents?"

"Parents are your okaasan and otousan." The little girl tilts her head again. "They're the ones who take care of you. Okaasan is the woman and otousan is the male."

"Ah, that's right..."

"So, Eri, the important question I wanted to ask you is if you would be okay if I adopted you and become your okaasan?"

Eri's eyes water up, and she tackles Hibiki into a grateful hug. "Yes."

Hibiki smiles, wrapping her own arms around the small girl and running a hand through the girl's locks. "I'm glad. I promise I will take care of you and love you with all I have. Aizawa and I will make sure you're happy."

"Aizawa?"

Hibiki pulls back from the hug, wiping her eyes along with Eri's. The pro points back to the man in the doorway. "Eraserhead. We'll be taking care of you. He's able to erase your quirk, so he'll be watching over you too."

Eri looks to the door at the man then tilts her head. "Would Eraser-san be my otousan?"

The comment makes the two blush. Aizawa scrunching his face down into his scarf to hide it.

"N-No, Erichan. You wouldn't have a otousan until I marry someone." She then explains what marry means as she sees her new daughter tilt her head again. "I would also like you to meet someone. They're my parents and that would make them your grandparents. Ojiisan and obaasan. Would you like to meet them?"

She thinks, taking in her words before nodding. "I would like that."

"Mama, papa, you can come in," she calls out.

Aizawa moves out of the doorway to let the two in the room.

Eri flinches back in surprise at how big and intimidating looking Masahiko is. She looks to the small woman beside him with a calming face. She becomes curious, looking at how different the two are from each other. They introduce themselves and chat with Eri for a few hours. Eri took an immediate liking to the family, already feeling at home.

"We'll see you again soon, Erichan," Masahiko says, standing up and brushing off his pants. "We have somewhere to be now."

Michiko gives the girl a quick hug. "I'm glad that you've decided to be part of the family. My daughter will take great care of you. You're gonna be so spoiled in this family. Bye, Erichan."

"Will you come back?"

"Once you're able to go home with Hibiki, we will visit you whenever you would like us to, dear," Michiko answer with a big smile.

"Okay... Bye, ojiisan, obaasan."

The two smile and leave the room with a wave.

Hibiki turns to the girl. "You're going to stay here a little longer while I get the proper things together, so you can stay with me for good. Okay?"

She nods. "I'm sorry you have to put up with me."

"Erichan," Hibiki says with a light scolding tone. "I will not have you apologize for me wanting you to be a part of my life."

The girl looks at her with tears blurring her vision.

Aizawa moves to stand beside Hibiki, placing a hand on her shoulder. "Echo has been thinking about you ever since she helped rescue you. She's been thinking long and hard about how to make you a part of her life. We already rearranged our living space to an apartment just for you."

"There's nowhere I'd rather you go than with me."

She sniffles as the tears fall. "Th-Thank you."

Hibiki looks to Aizawa. "Well, I was planning on taking her out and getting her some clothes, but I have to go to my agency and do some paperwork and train some sidekicks. Do... you mind going to get her some clothes?"

"Sure."

"I'll pay you back, just give me the receipt later." She turns back to Eri and smiles. "I'll see you later Eri. The process to adopt you is going to take a little while, so you'll be here for a bit longer. I'm going to try and take you home as quickly as I can, okay? I'll be back later to see what clothes Aizawa got for you, okay?"

"Okay."

Hibiki kisses the top of the girl's head before standing up and willing her suit to cover her. "See you two later."

〰️〰️〰️

She returns to see Eri before she goes to sleep and to see all the clothes Aizawa got for her.

"Aizawa, I'm back."

Eri rushes up with her new outfit. "Echo-san!"

Hibiki blinks, looking at the atrocious outfit on her. "Aizawa..."

"Yeah?"

She takes a deep breath. "....

"They look fine," he huffs.

She sighs. "Maybe for pajamas. She still looks cute though." She rubs her temples. "I'll go get some clothes for her when I have some free time. Here, Eri, let's get you to bed. I assume you've already had dinner and brushed your teeth and all that?"

Eri nods. "Yes."

"Good. Tired?"

She yawns. "Yeah..."

Hibiki scoops up the girl and gets her into the cushioned hospital bed, tucking her in under the covers. She kisses her forehead before Eri rolls onto her stomach and snuggles into the pillow. "Goodnight, Erichan." She rubs the young girl's back until she falls fast asleep. She gets up and looks to Aizawa who's holding one of the shirts he got.

He's mumbling to himself, but she can still hear him. "What's wrong with it?"

"Everything, Aizawa," Hibiki chuckles at his flinch.

"I hate when you do that..."

"Come on, we should let her rest." Hibiki turns off the light and shuts the door behind them.

The two pros leave to go on patrol, but not together.
