Chapter 4

Camilo frowned and followed Abuela, he could feel some deep dark secret hidden behind her head, something she'd never even been able to say. He focused on the back of Abuela's head, wondering what was bothering her. Maybe she had expected something to happen today, but how was he to know? Rolling his eyes, Camilo followed her to the dining room, his mind lost as he thought of the butterfly, the way it glowed, the feeling of revenge and the blood. How had that happened to his hand? What was that butterfly anyway?

As he was out of the world, thinking to himself Camilo didn't notice as Dolores snuck up behind him and walked by his side. She waved her hands in front of him, trying to get his attention but Camilo didn't even respond. Pursing her lips, Dolores elbowed him in the ribs.

"Oweee!" Camilo jumped, turning into Abuela, Felix and Bruno before coming to his senses and realising it had just been Dolores. Again. "Hey, what was that for!?"

Dolores crossed her arms. "I couldn't get your attention," she said in her usual quiet voice.

"You could have at least said something. Like," turning into Dolores, Camilo impersonated her quiet voice, "Camiiiiilo! It's your annoying sister again."

Dolores ignored his tease and looked him dead in the eye. "I heard everything. I could hear your voice, the butterfly and the blood echoing, you have to tell me what happened, what was that butterfly?"

Camilo smiled. "You know, I would tell you except I don't actually know. Why don't you know? Aren't you like, supposed to know everything with your hearing or something?"

"But-" Dolores started to protest but Camilo cut her short.

"Bye! Abuela needs me, maybe later!"

Dolores glared after her brother as he ran to catch up to Abuela who was already walking down the stairs after the dining room.

It was hard to catch up to her, you would think by her age she would be slow but she walked at a quick pace, steadily leading him through a maze of corridors and rooms. Parts of the house Camilo had never seen before didn't even make Abuela hesitate. He didn't even know how she knew how to navigate around here, it seemed impossible! First they went left, then right, then right and left and left and left and right... it became impossible for Camilo to even remember his left and rights as he tried to figure out the way back, since when was Casita so big?!

"Hey Abuela!" Camilo called and he ran around another corner. "Where are we going?"

Abuela didn't even turn back to look at him. "Somewhere where almost everyone can't hear us."

Expect for Dolores. Camilo sighed, he knew that was the best answer he was going to get. Who knows how long Abuela would be leading him through these mazes! He glanced down and saw a rat scuttle across the ground in front of his feet. There was no getting away from anyone here. Dolores and Antonio would be listening, that was for sure.

By the time Abuela had stopped walking and opened up a door to a dusky room with two living chairs, Camilo's feet were dragging behind him. He looked around the room in confusion. Tall wooden bookshelves reached towards the roof, there leather bound books worn and old. The two living chairs stood in the middle of the room, made of soft red velvet but even they were dusty and had holes here and there that showed the cushioning underneath the expensive material. The wooden floorboards had a thick layer of gray dust covering them, making the light brown wooden colour unnoticeable. They had dents and chips all over them and when Camilo placed his feet down, they creaked as if they were going to give way underneath him. Their was a curtain at the end of the room but a curtain was pulled tightly across, not allowing any light to flow through its thick covering. Turning in a slow circle, Camilo inspected the walls and wondered where Antonios rat might be hiding in one of those cracks. There was lots of places with the the wallpaper pealing off and large wholes smaller animals could squeeze through - if they even knew the way back to the kitchen!

"Where are we?" Camilo asked, he voice blowing dusk particles through the stuffy air of the room.

Abuela sat down in one of the chairs and tapped her hand lightly on the one next to it. Camilo sat down, waiting for her to explain. "We are in the part of Casita that was here before I was given the miracle." Abuela told him. "When I was given the miracle, there was already a house that Casita joined up with. The miracle used that house as a foundation to create Casita upon."

Camilo found his mouth hanging open. "So... what do you mean by a foundation?"

Abuela shrugged. "Well, you see, this house was underground. So, Casita built right on top of it."

Camilo smiled. "Okay, I'm not even going to try to understand this."

Abuela nodded. "Now, Camilo, what happened today? Is the house in danger? Whatever happened, I need to know."

"Yeah, well, that's what I wanted to talk to you about Abuela. If anyone knows the answers to this, I think it will be you."

"Go on," Abuela urged.

"Well..." Camilo's voiced trailed off as he thought of were to start. "Basically... I went and helped with a drain, found this dark gray butterfly, it landed on my hand and had some really bad feelings, then it fluttered of and caused my whole entire hand to bleed and then I got annoyed because people were holding me up as I tried get to Julieta."

Abuela looked at him, as if expecting more information. "Anything else..."

Camilo shrugged, "No, not really. The tunnel was dark so the butterfly glowed a bit but I just thought I'd let you know. I don't think it's really normal for butterfly's to make your whole hand bleed."

Abuela's face creased as she went into deep thought. "Camilo," she said. "I don't want you to tell a word of this to anyone. I will talk about it tomorrow at dinner and tell you what's happening but until then pretend everything's fine, I don't want anyone else to know."

"So you know something?"

Abuela shook her head. "I won't tell you or anyone anything till tomorrow night."

Camilo sighed, when Abuela makes up her mind, she never changes her decisions. "Okay, I'm going to help set the table then, otherwise the others will get mad."

Abuela nodded swiftly and stayed where she was, leaving Camilo to walk out of the room by himself. As he opened the door, he realised the rat scurrying between his feet, trying to get back to Antonio. He picked the rodent up swiftly and grinned, "Casita, can you show me the way back?"

Trusting the house to get him back into the dining room Camilo ran forward as the floorboards pushed him from side to side, leading him back through the maze of twists and turns. The rat squealed, surprised the the sudden speed it was travelling at. It took half as much time to get back as it did to get there. In only five minutes Camilo found himself back in the dining room, Antonio waiting there for him.

Camilo grinned at his brother and handed him the rat. "Don't worry, I got him here faster. And also," Camilo winked. "He heard everything." Turning into Abuela as the rat started talking to Antonio Camilo impersonated her soft voice. "Don't tell a word to anyone!"

Antonio smiled and nodded. "I promise."
