IWAIZUMI LOOKED DOWN AT HER while she hummed a little song. He smiled lightly.
"You know what? I honestly think that vanilla is better than strawberry." He said, leaning back onto his heel as L/N started to pack her bag.
"Wha? Oh...you're one of those guys who like plain types, huh?" She sighed. Then smiled. "Strawberry is way better than every flavour. Except for caramel. Any type of caramel is amazing."
"See, I gotta disagree on that one. Caramel's kind of gross." He half-smiled, resting his arms behind his head while looking down at her. "It's way too sweet."
"Okay...what about salted caramel?"
He pondered for a moment. Then spoke. "Eh, I just don't like the flavour in general. It's just...ew." He faked gagged, looking away.
"Now you're pushing it. Strawberry and caramel are two of the um- best flavours to ever...be flavoured!" She threw her gloved hands up in the air, slinging her bag around her shoulders quickly and started to walk out. Iwaizumi followed suit, jogging up to her.
"I personally like plainer tastes. Sours just meh and bitter is always icky no matter who you are."
"I actually like bitter as long as it's paired with either spicy or something flavourful," L/N stated with a grin. She hummed. "Like...soy sauce and dumplings! It balances out the tastes."
"Hm...I guess. Man, you like culinary shit don't you?" His eyes sort of crinkled as he spoke.
Now regaining her composure, she replied. "Yep. I really want to be a cook or owner of a diner when I'm older. I love making food that people will love." She smiled at him, unknowing making him smile back.
"Yeah...Maybe I'd go there." He mumbled, glancing at her cheekily. "Just maybe, though."
"Why, do you underestimate my cooking skills?" She asked teasingly, looking over her shoulder at him. He scoffed and sort of looked away.
"I mean...the only thing you kinda had in your cupboard was like...5-minute noodles."
"It's because my Aunt likes them, okay?" Blushing, she snapped at him and lifted her scarf so it was covering her face.
"Alright, whatever you say."
L/N laughed, punching his bicep lightly and smiling. But her smile soon fell, and she started to look around.
Iwaizumi noticed her lack of smile and was confused, "are you okay?"
"Do-do you hear that?" She asked carefully, the ace looking back at her and lifting one eyebrow.
"Yeah...I think. Is it meowing?"
"That's what I'm hearing too! Is there a cat somewhere? I don't remember any stray cats being around this area." She reflected anxiously, looking around. She walked away to the side and the meowing got louder. Iwaizumi followed, them both moving around until the noise was at its loudest point.
"Where is it? It's louder here. Do you think it's okay?" She looked at Iwaizumi for reassurance. He smiled and nodded.
"I'm sure it's okay. We should get goin-"
"Oh my god! It's in the tree!" L/N yelled out, hands flying to her mouth. Her eyes softened as she pointed up to show the small, grey kitten shivering and meowing while clung onto a branch. "Poor baby.."
"Should we...help it?"
"Of course!" She said with glee, clasping her hands together. "I don't know if my Aunt will let me keep it and I don't see a bigger cat anywhere around here..."
"So if we save it, could you keep it, Iwaizumi-san?" She asked with a sweet smile.
First, there were pros. He'd have a cute cat, which she just simply loved. Then it would give him an excuse to ask her to come over. Pro number 2, they could be mother and father to that cat...technically making them-
But then there were cons. One day, he might scare it accidentally when he couldn't control his anger. And if Oikawa, Makki or Mattsun saw it and somehow found how why he had it, they would not let it go. They'd tease him for months, whether she was there or not.
He thought- or he would've if she hadn't said his name with such adoration and expectancy. Who was he to say no? Even so, the pros outweighed the cons heavily. Even if there were the same amount, the thought of her coming over made his face heat up in itself.
"Of course." He smiled, unintentionally making blood rush to her already warm cheeks.
"Alright! Now first...how do we save it." She put a finger on her chin. "We're both too short to reach it by ourselves...So how about I get on your shoulders?"
The boy's heart stopped for a long second. What?
"But are you sure you can hold me? I'm pretty heavy..." She frowned. He almost frowned too, wanting to wipe that frown off of her face and-
wait, too intimate...what're you thinking my guy
"No-no I'm sure I can. You're not that heavy. Even if you were, I'm sure I could still." He pat her shoulder with his gloved hand, smiling to convince her.
"Ah-hah, if you say so, Iwaizumi-san!" She smiled widely. "Alright, now...could you carry me onto your..."
"Yep." He said quickly, trying his hardest not to break down. He grabbed onto her torso and lifted her up and she was surprisingly lighter than how she described. She was set onto his shoulders. She sort of wobbled back, her natural instincts were to grab onto the first thing she could. Her arms were sort of wrapped around his neck along with her thighs.
"Ah! I'm sorry! Are you okay?"
"Yep, aha... don't worry about me..."
She sighed heavily, reaching up and motioning for the kitten to jump into her arms.
"C'mere baby..." She tutted, clicking her tongue and baby talking the cat. The cat sort of leaned back, obviously scared of the girl. But seeing no other way out, the cat took the chance and jumped into her arms, snuggling up to her. "There we go."
The cat clung to her jacket, refusing to let go. She got off of his shoulders, showing him the cat which they both saved. "Look at her... or him... isn't it beautiful!"
The cat took one good look at Iwaizumi and immediately got off of her and clung to him instead. She was surprised and a little jealous, but kept quiet and simply smiled.
"I guess he likes you."
He stared at her awkwardly while the cat snuggled up to his chest, mewling. "I guess so.."
'That should've been me. Stupid fucking cat.'
woah that was a whole 180 damn
"We should be going now. I'm pretty sure it's getting really dark, huh?" He said, breaking the silence with that damned smile. She smiled back.
"Yeah. We should."

The kitten was basically now attached to Iwaizumi, refusing to ever let go of him or get off of his jacket arms. L/N eventually had to go her separate way since their houses weren't close to each other at all.
"I'll see you tomorrow," She said with a grin.
"Yeah...I'll see you." He mumbled, smiling slightly as well. "Hey... I have a practice game coming up in a week. It's during school hours, but if you get a pass from the coach, you can come and watch."
His hands rub at each other, and he feels heat emitting from them as he continues to talk. "I kinda forgot who we're going against, though. Guess you'll have to be there to find out," he smiled with a light tone.
L/N smiled back, "Yes! I'd totally love to watch it. I haven't watched you play an actual game, I think. I'll... uh... be cheering for you, haha...!" Heat crawled up her neck as she squeezed her eye shut and mentally begged herself to stop talking.
She opened her eyes, to only see a soft smile upon Iwaizumi's rough features, eyes squinted and lips turned upwards in adoration, and she couldn't help but admire this soft sight that was so rare.
"I'll be counting on it." His hand makes contact with her hair, patting it lightly a few times, before walking away, the cat still sitting soundly in his arms.
