AUTHOR's POV

SILENCE. That was what she expected to encounter once her ears got fully covered by the black beanie she was wearing on top of her head;
but no - even though she was the only one adjusting the body of hers on one of the two front row car seats and the music coming from the radio was off, the loud cracks of people talking and goosing outside the university parking lot, was putting Evren up for not such of a happy humor.
"Fucking seriously", she bit her lip nervously, attempting to control her demeanor side from showing off this earlier.
It's 8 in the morning, she thought, gushingly playing with her fingers while her tired eyes glanced at the excitement coming from the other side of the road, where a few groupies stand. How can this people have so much energy?
Looking back at her features once she unlocked her IPhone's screen camera, she noticed the dark circles above her eyes and the paleness of her once rosy cheeks transforming her face. She really needed to sleep more.
Exhaling deeper, Evren cuddles the side of her backpack while getting out of the car and walking into the building's main hall, preparing herself to be the center of the attention once again.
She had been in college for three days and a bunch of crazy shit all already happened, and she disliked it - firstly, having to get used to being mocked, insulted and picked on because she had chosen to come back to a place where she never felt truly welcomed.
Aside from Colber and Valerie, Evren didn't trust a single person in high school, and now the memories had all been awakened...
Although her strong personality had always pushed her to adopt a rebellious posture when it came to protect the less adventurous kids from the jokes, injustices and pranks the elite members used to do, at the end of the day, they would win by labeling Evren Maddox as being a poor girl with zero talents and no friends.
She hated to know they were speaking the truth - even today, by walking through the glassy doors, college was just a resemblance of her sad, idiotic, hopeless past. Nothing had changed, despite the fact she had now lost him too.
And suddenly, being tossed into a labyrinth of lies, secrets and deep loosened ends, stressed her out to the point she could not even sleep at night, knowing she had to do something if she wanted to find the one correct way out of the labyrinth, if it depends on risking her shot for a guy she doesn't even know of.
Her green-brown eyes trailed to where her locker was, only to find a familiar figure standing right next to it with his arms crossed, waiting for her arrival.
Yes. Him.
She thought, taking the headphones off her ears, and rolling her eyes as if she had perfectly nailed it when she had anticipated Rhys would be waiting for her this morning, after the anonymous text message he had sent her.
"We need to talk." He mouthed from afar, pointing to her locker, before he glanced at her one last time.
Right, they probably shouldn't be seen together... Making her way to the locker, she opened it quickly and saw a paper inside it.
We shouldn't meet in school but in my house is too risky. Everyone's watching.
Meet me up at the gym after classes are over, I got a spare key for the locker rooms.
Don't be late.
This Brendan guy, thinking he can boss me around... Evren thought, letting out a tiny smirk before taking the books off the locker.
He's very much wrong. But fine, if that's what he wants, why not showing him she has the power to make decisions too? Maybe when she convinces him she hasn't joined him because she needed to, rather because wanted to, he'll finally see what she's made off.
Perhaps, next time. She's definitely looking forward for the chance to.

"Fuck! What the hell!?" Brendan hissed at the sound of a door closing beside him at the very second he put his t shirt on.
"What? You afraid of sounds now?" He heard her, turning his face to see a girl wearing ripped blue jeans, a red shirt and a black beanie covering the long chocolate hair of hers.
He got bored once he noticed the joking smirk she flashed, ready to use his irony as a response.
"You're funny." He said, "You sure no one followed you?"
"I'm not the dumb one here." Evren said, pointing out it didn't make sense to meet up in a locker room at 7pm, one hour after classes ended.
"Advanced football classes are the last ones of the day, I couldn't take the risk to talk to you when everyone else, especially the boys, were here." He pointed the obvious, adding he is the last one to leave too.
"Here", tossing a key he eyed her, "Save it. It might be of use later."
Catching the key, she casually put it inside her backpack, returning her attention to the space around her, where the football team showers and prepare themselves. God, the smell of men's sweat is truly disgusting, not to mention they see each other's naked in here. Fucking gross.
Rhys uses his hands to twirl his wild wet hair while he attentively watches Evren thinking about something that's making her expression look stiff. What the fuck goes on that brain of hers? He asks himself, before saying,
"So-"
"You said you got a lead, Travis right?" She interrupts him, immediately returning to her straightforward attitude, eyeing him closely.
"Yeah. Something's not right."
"What happened?" Evren questioned right away, curious about what he had find out.
"Hey- woah woah woah, hold on, Maddox. I'm not going to tell you shit unless you say how much do you know about Travis." Brendan reacts.
Of course he isn't, it's obvious isn't it? It would be dumb of him to give her informations if she doesn't open herself first. Both of them have to share their cards.
Besides, Brendan isn't quite satisfied with her story on being linked to Colber. How much had he told her about the Circle and the members? Does she know as much as Brendan does about Travis?
"He's a dick. Let's start right there."
"What else?" Brendan questioned, wanting to test Evren and her knowledge.
Patiently exhaling, Evren closed her arms to her chest and got silence for a bit. Is she really going to have to do this? How much she hated being in this position. But one thing she's right about, she's going to have to find a way to fire back.
"You belong to the Circle right? You should know about why Colber formed the Circle years ago, otherwise he wouldn't let you in." She asked Brendan, weighting her choice of words.
He smiled, not even worried. "Yeah, so? I asked you about Travis-"
"Travis. He was the reason behind Colber's choice." She said it, with so much conviction, self awareness and determination, Brendan couldn't even find the tiniest bit of insecurity behind her voice.
He was overwhelmed. Colber told her that much? "How-?"
"I told you. He was my best friend, I know everything about it. I might've met him on the summer after it happened but I was there, long before you, when things got weird and everyone started to talk about Colber and Travis."
"Yeah? Okay then what Travis did?"
"I know about his false driving license and the time when Colber when to his house and found the packages - you sure you want me to keep going?"
Brendan gulped, astonish, tense and at the same time, mad. How foolish of Colber to trust a girl with all of this information about every single one of us that could end our fucking lives in a second, what was he thinking for fuck's sake? He could have blow us all up!
"I've heard enough." Turning his back on her, he used his rage to punch his sports bag beside him.
"Colber had his reasons, even though I don't agree with him. But that's not the point. He trusted me to kept his secrets so I did. I never betrayed him or-"
"His secrets?!" Brendan yelled, all worked up. "He told you everyone's secrets but his'! To a girl he had met in the fucking summer? He had no fucking right to!"
His chest kept rising up while his pulse went wild, Evren was now close to a bomb about to explode.
"You know that's not true! He wanted to hel-"
"To help... yeah." He said, controlling himself, breaking eye contact, entering on his own world of thoughts.
Evren noticed his body had gotten closer to hers while he had lost himself in his angry act, yet she was more focused on trying to understand his sudden outburst.
"And how was he helping the others by telling you all of this, uh? What did you do back then? Laughed?"
"I supported him and whatever choice he had done. That's what friends are fucking for." She screamed too, finding his words to be hurtful and completely out of sense and reality.
Yes, Rhys can't possibly know about how much Evren suffered too by the hands of the almighty elite, can he? He wasn't there! They were horrible with her, even after knowing she was Colber's girlfriend, and yet not even once did she think about revealing the secrets she knew about them all. Didn't she want to? Her brain would scream at her to get revenge but her heart remained true to Colber - she couldn't do that to him.
Brendan just watched her, compelled by the fire her eyes held, surprised by her answer, until she finished,
"Maybe Colber wouldn't be dead by now if I had opened my mouth about the Circle, but I didn't okay? I'm dealing with my ghosts, you deal with yours! For whatever stupid reason, here I am today, facing a dickhead I know nothing about except the idea of we both having a common goal. Do you really think it's just a coincidence?"
Indeed, Colber had erased the presence of a girl who is extremely valuable in terms of what threat she represents to all of the Circle members without them even knowing it. Brendan would be a fool not to see her as an advantage.
However he couldn't ignore the main question. Had Colber really thought about it a long time ago - what would happen if someone turned his back on him? If the answer is positive, there's no way he would imagine a scenario without Brendan meeting Evren, right?
"I don't know what went through his mind, and I don't wish to know either. I'm here to focus on a Murder, not on Colber's previous intentions." He told her, the cold black stare coming back to his eyes.
"Then say it. Why do you suspect Travis?"
Brendan exhaled, but went serious when he said, "Actually, it's Page. At the party I found her crying close to Colber's bedroom. The first thing that went through my mind was that maybe Travis had dumped her that same night. And it makes sense. She wasn't at the funeral or in school, so she avoided him at all costs... but then I-"
"Maddox, have you ever noticed something was up between Page and Jonathan, I mean, before you left three years ago?"
The sudden confused look covering Evren's face told him she was just as surprised. "No, she- she was always with Travis."
"Right. Thing is, I visited her yesterday and guess what. They were together." He paused, "Definitely together. And she looked... different. As if they were hiding from the world."
"That's not the Page I know at all. She is crazy about Travis, she would just use Jonathan to make him jealous."
"Right, I thought so too. Besides, what are the odds of breaking up at the precise moment a death is being planned? They were together Friday morning..."
Pushing her backpack to touch the floor, Evren starts to think about what to do now that they found a primary suspect. "You want to talk to him right?"
She asks Rhys, as if she was capable of reading his thoughts.
"There's a long story between him and I and..- he just wouldn't trust me, whatever I say."
Bingo. Evren is quick on being able to find a solid connection. Of course, Valerie had mentioned it before, hadn't she?
"After you left, Brendan entered high school as a new student months later. The circle had already been formed but Colber got close to Rhys. He was a troublesome, orphan, poor kid with a miracle sports scholarship saving his life. Colber helped him make it to the team, and they were inseparable ever since."
- so, Brendan replaced Travis spot on the football team? Checkmate. Now she had a reason to approach Travis.
Sliding a hand inside her backpack she took off her iPhone, saying "I know where to find him."
A smirk covered her red lips when she tipped down the name of the bar he would attend every Thursday, that is of course, if he still had the same habits. "But this time, I make the rules. I know the perfect way to make him talk. You're coming?"
Brendan was quiete, but couldn't hide his pleasure too when Evren showed him off a wicked smile. Bad meets Evil: Finally, they were playing.
