『Chapter 40』
You saw nothing but eternal darkness. It was almost as if you were blind. You looked left and right, back to front, nothing. But the air was hot and it smelled horrible. It smelled like monstrosity... And blood. You didn't know if that was even possible yet you felt the energy. It was somehow draining you.
At some point, you saw a glimpse of light at the end of the void. You made your way to it, only to discover nothing but a mirror. At first, you saw yourself, but then something was revealed.
You reached a hand to your face, where you saw the black lines. Some strands of your hair turned red as your eyes glow, matching the colour. You released a gasp when you saw your hands were coated with blood. Your breath trembled in fear as your knees went weak.
You snapped your head back, feeling that someone was there. You saw a dark and tall figure. It felt evil, you could even feel it in your bones. You saw the figure drew a sinister red smile as strands of red circled it. You soon found yourself floating in the air, feeling a sudden pressure on your neck, choking you hard that you tried to get them off. Only nothing was there, it was that creature.
"Perhaps I was wrong..." You felt tears in your eyes as the force pressed harder to your neck. You tried to take in a breath until you were suddenly released. You gasped in a huge amount of breath, putting a hand to your neck to soothe the pain.
You felt something pulling your arms behind you, then another to your neck. They looked like black chains, but you felt them burning to your skin. You let out a scream, shutting your eyes as the pain took over you. Tears were streaming down your cheeks, turning your head back. Your mind was suddenly piled up with images of your nightmares. The circus, the fire, the souls you had taken, and your demon form.
The chains hurt you more than ever, it felt like they were ripping your limbs. Your screams continued, the chains kept pulling you down. The ground beneath you cracked as the figure ahead if you spoke up, "Maybe... Just maybe..."
The next thing you knew you were pulled down by the chains. You tried to reach anywhere, finding a way to release yourself.
Nothing.

You gasped awake, reaching out your hand. You shrieked, accidentally dropping to the floor. A wave of pain rushed to your head, your hands immediately found their way to your temple. You clenched your jaw, trying not to let out a scream. You didn't want to cause a ruckus like last time. You bit your lip to relieve the pain, tasting the iron-like taste as it started to bleed.
Eventually, the pain subsided. You let out a huge breath of relief. You stayed on the floor, still feeling the pain. You stayed there for a while until you felt better.

You tried to decipher the dream you had as you busied yourself with your tasks. What was that? That was new and different. The blood. The chains. The figure.
"Y/n," you barely jump when you felt a hand on your shoulder. "Did you hear me?" Sebastian asked in concern. "You're not yourself. I haven't heard you insult me since this morning"
You looked away, shaking off his words. "I'm fine... I..." You sighed, looking back at him. You were lost at words, arguing whether to tell him or not. "You know me..." You released another sigh, shaking your head.
You didn't want to talk about that much. You kept distracting yourself by putting yourself to work while Sebastian was desperately trying to figure you out. "You know you can always tell me. I'll listen." Sebastian moved next to you, trying to catch your eyes. You glanced at him, giving him a soft smile at the support. "I know," you replied, reaching to cup his cheek, rubbing it with your thumb. For some time, you were lost deep in his eyes. "It's just..." You trailed off, sitting on a stool.
"It hurts me sometimes." You said, massaging your temple. "And it doesn't stop," you added, suddenly feeling another ache. Sebastian was quick to stand by your side. "Maybe you should rest up."
"No. It's okay. I don't want it to take over me." You shook your head, patting his arm. He gave your hand a gentle pressure, putting up a concerned look. "You don't have to worry about me." You smiled at him, brushing his fingers.
You continued to work on the kitchen, giving Sebastian a hand while the trio was sent to town to grab a few supplies. You moved to the back, where you started to pick up the dried laundry when you heard a certain voice called you out.
"Y/n, Darling!" Grell chimed in, happily strutted his way to you. You released a tired sigh, turning your back. "Don't turn your back to me!" He jumped ahead of you, blocking your path. You frowned, "What?"
"Don't you miss me, darling? I've been so jealous since you stole my Bassy!" You couldn't help to curve a little a smile. Despite his attitude, he somehow always made you laugh. "What are you doing here?" You said, taking the laundry basket and walked past him.
"Ah! Bassy, dear!" Grill saw Sebastian at the door when he came out to help you. Before Grell could run to him, a woman came by, yanking his long hair. "Eek!"
"Oi! Knock it off! You're gonna make me suspended!"
Your attention was caught by the woman, pulling Grell back. Short platinum hair, glasses, you figured she was another death God, with a weapon on her hand. You watched the two bicker with each other when the girl turned to you. "Sorry, it's hard to keep him under control these past days." She spoke up, trying to keep Grell under her arms. "Ever since Spears paired me up with this idiot, I can't work properly." She muttered, smacking him in the head.
You squinted your eyes, somehow recognizing her. She sighed, leaning on her spear. "Guess you forgot about me, huh, kiddo?" She chuckled, winking at you. Your eyes expanded, pointing to yourself. "Me? Wait, we've met?"
She shrugged, nodding at your words. "Sure! I mean I know we're not close but you were a good company. Remember me? Caroline? Dark alley? Where I thought you were crazy?" She smiled, snapping her fingers. You thought for a while, going deep into your memory lane.
You snapped as you finally remember her. Your old friend. "I do remember you!" Of course, you were buried by your grief that you forgot the little things.
You remembered meeting her years ago, in the streets of London. She didn't change that much since that day. You wondered where had she been these past years. To your surprise, she was the first person you called a friend. The way you figured out how she was a death God surprised her. She was actually the first person you told who you really were.
"Sorry, who are you?" Sebastian stepped in, cutting off your thoughts. "You're the Sebastian who Grell always talks about, eh?" You watched her continuously picking on him while he stood there, not in a more to handle such things. You laughed lightly at the scene, seeing an old friend of yours coming back.
"What are you guys going here?" You stopped them. Sebastian pushed Carol away from him as she chuckled. "Right. Well, I was on my way somewhere but this idiot had other plans. But I guess I get to meet you again." She shrugged, shifting her weight to her spear. Grell whined, walking up beside her. "Now, now, Carol. We didn't– Ack!" Carol smacked the back of his head.
"So sorry. It was nice to see you again, by the way." Said Caroline. She flipped on her journal, releasing a sigh. "We need to get going. Later, girl~" she said, winking at you. Grell was still trying his best to grasp Sebastian's attention until Caroline pulled him back. You waved goodbye at the two as you parted.
"You never told me about her." Said Sebastian, helping you out. You shrugged, "It's been a long time since we saw each other." You picked up where you left before and went inside with him.

Ciel and Sebastian went off for the next day. Said that he was invited to an evening gala by another noble. You were surprised he didn't bring you along. You tried to question him about it but he said it was nothing important and that you wouldn't even want to hear.
"I'll leave the manor in your hands, Y/n," Ciel ordered, taking his cane from Sebastian's hands. You pursed your lips, shrugging your shoulders. "It's always me. You don't have to say it every time." You replied to which Ciel replied with a nod. He then went to the carriage as Sebastian approached you.
"Believe me, kitten. You staying here is for your own good." He whispered to your ear which you found odd. You raised a brow, looking up at him. "If you say so then." You sighed, nodding along. You watched them going off in the carriage before you stepped back inside.
You walked down the hall, on your way to clean up Ciel's study as he said. You sighed at how many books were scattered on his desk. "So much for a Phantomhive." You scoffed, taking his books one by one. You noticed an opened letter Ciel tucked under a candelabra. Being your curious self, you decided to take a sneak look.
You read the letter, something about a party held in the manor of the sender. However, when you reached the bottom, you felt a shiver running down your spine. Your eyes expanded at the name.
Alois Trancy.
In reflex, you dropped the letter, taking a few steps back. You took some time to breathe as your memories flooded your mind. You quickly put back the letter and tidied up the rest of the mess.
Is that where they were going? Is that why he didn't let me come with him?
Questions filled your head as you finished up with your task. Taking one last glance at the paper, you left the study.
