Melina Ivory's POV
"Why, Headmaster Grimm sounds like the unfairest of them all! How prudent and crude of him," Melina said as Raven and Essie walked down the hall with her. Melina curled a loose brown curl behind her ear, spotting streaks of white. Time for another trip to Sun Salon... Melina was pretty sure that Rapunzel would be sick of her considering how many times she bleached her hair.
"He's a jackass too," Essie added unhappily. She was applying mascara to her eyelashes as they walked, mirror hand-in-hand, and occasionally bumping into someone. "Grimm didn't even let Raven explain herself. He accused her and now everyone is gossiping like a pack of vultures."
"Actually, groups of vultures are called a committee, venue, or volt," Melina corrected.
Essie rolled her eyes. "Shut up, Mel." They were heading to the Student Lounge because Apple had asked them to come. It was supposedly an emergency that absolutely could not wait. Melina had no idea what Apple was talking about, she guessed they were going to find out.
"Are you and Apple still giving each other the silent treatment?" Melina ventured.
Raven shrugged. "After the Lifairy's fire, I crashed at Essie's dorm for the night. Her roommate, Ladeline, didn't mind. She was talking to thin air while holding a bottle of ink, it was a bit strange..." She shook her head, dismissing it.
Arriving at the lounge, Melina knocked on the large oak door, hearing a muffled "come in." Opening the door, Melina was stunned. Dozens of studentsβall Royals, Melina realizedβwere inside by Apple White's side. They were clustered around the Student Lounge, sitting on seats, the floor, or just standing.
"Raven," Apple exhaled a breath of relief. "Thank Grimm you came."
"Why wouldn't I?"
"I was afraid you were mad at me."
"Mad? I thought you were upset at me. Good Goodmothers, it doesn't matter." Without hesitation, Raven smiled and grabbed Apple by the arm, hugging her. Finally, that gruelling feud is over, Melina thought to herself.
Essie nudged her. "Now, that is why communication is important."
"Couldn't have said it better myself," Melina mused. Scanning the crowd, she spotted Blaise Blanc and Ladeline Laddin sitting on the couch. After meeting Ladeline two days ago, Melina was fond of her. She was brown-skinned with short black hair with henna on her hands. She was talking rapidly to Blaise, clearly having too much sugar for breakfast. Blaise seemed as if he was dozing off, barely comprehending half of the things she was listing. They'd make a cute couple, Melina thought. Perhaps she should be the next Cupid instead and meddle in others' affairs.
Sitting on the floor was Dahlia Dopey, Lynari Fae, and Winifred Darling, making smalltalk. "Thank Grimm you weren't hurt in the fire," Dahlia gasped, eyes wide. "I'd ought to find Willow and thank her myself..."
"I can't remember if the Waverly sister is Royal or Rebel," Stella said, by the mention of Willow. Rebels always seemed to get on Stella Prince's nerves. "Personally, she needs to stick to a side." Down the rabbit hole of the Royal-and-Rebel debate again, Melina thought.
"Does it really matter?" Aurelio Stiltskin asked Stella. "Royal or Rebel? Both are valid."
"Isn't your destiny being a kid-snatcher?" Stella said pointedly.
"Which I accept gracefully, plus I give the miller daughter's firstborn back eventually," he replied, rolling his eyes. Next to him was Vesperina Hatter, who was mildly intrigued by this argument, though it seemed as if she didn't completely understand what was happening. Melina gave Vesperina a friendly smile before glancing around.
Melina also noticed Emerick Diggs, deeply focused on fiddling with something in his hand. Most likely another experiment that would end up blowing up, but perhaps that was another tale. Next to him stood Chase Redforth, continuing his stoic and battle-like stance. Then Chase noticed Melina, stiffening. Shit. Seeing the next Red Knight reminded Melina of her cousin, Scarlett, who she hadn't spoken to yet. Melina assumed that Scarlett was avoiding her and by nature, Chase would have deemed Melina a threat to the next Red Queen. She backed away, preferring to not get her guts sliced out by a knight.
In a game of chess, only one side can win and someone has to take out the other. Her mother always told her that. It was a verse Melina memorized by heart, the origin she did not know. It was an awfully tricky affairβeach generation of the White Queens and Red Queens had a side that would die in the final chess battle. A never ending war...
Apple clapped her hands, gaining the attention of everyone in the room. "Now that Raven is here, let the meeting beginβ" The door flew open, slamming against the wall, startling everyone. Melina's eyes widened in surprise, but never in malice, to the sight of the Rebels.
"Hold on, Prissy, this ain't started yet," Luka said as the Rebels filed into the Student Lounge. What is going on? Melina wondered as she recognized several of the Rebels. These included; Branween Beast, Jameson Hood, Ravenna Rown, Lyric Seabrooke, Niklaus Nikiforov, Marigold Sun, Daphne Tremaine, Frederick Pan, and Scarlett Rouge.
"Ah, shit, of course, Dollface is here," Essie grumbled, rolling her eyes at Luka.
"Thanks a ton." The wooden boy's limbs were slightly toasted, black charcoal gnawing at him. His tawny blond hair was frumpled as he scowled at Essie. Melina grabbed Essie's wrist, warning her not to provoke the notorious prankster, but Essie ignored her.
"You're welcome, you hotheaded bastard."
Jameson Hood stepped between them. "Guys, stop it. We're not here to start fights, we're here to support Raven, remember?" Jameson's light brown skin was hidden under a red cloak, the hood pulled up, but his eyes remained youthful and curious.
"So this is what the meeting is about?" Melina asked Apple.
"Well, sort of. I gathered the Royals here because we want to find the Storybook of Legends since it's missing. We want our destinies to be kept safe, not kept in a random thief's hands," Apple replied. Unintentionally, all eyes shifted to Ladeline, the next Aladdin, and also a notable thief at EAH.
"Awe, c'mon!" she cried out. "I'd never steal the Storybook of Legends! Well, maybe, but it wasn't me this time." This time? Melina questioned in her mind.
"Your literal destiny is to be a thief, Eline," Blaise told her bluntly. Way to go, Blaise. Melina rolled her eyes. This guy seriously needed to brush on his ladies skills ever since leaving Wonderland High.
"Wait, you're all here because you want to find the Book to keep your little, pristine destinies in order?" Ravenna Rown blurted. Pale-skinned and with dark circles under her black eyes, she was a bit intimidating, Melina found. Her black fairy wings gave a slight flutter as she glared at the Royals. "The Rebels came here to clear Raven's name. Grimm has unrightfully accused her of crimes she didn't commit, we're here to help find the real culprit. And all you Royals care about are yourselves?"
Suddenly, Melina remembered it was a so-called battle between Royals and Rebels. Only one side can win, her mother's voice echoed in her head. "Rav, let's be civil, we don't need to start a war," Raven reassured the fairy. Still, tensions were high. "Apple, you were saying?"
"Well, we need to clear Raven's name off Headmaster Grimm's suspect list somehow, so we need to find who is the real thief along with the Storybook of Legendsβ" Suddenly, there was rapid knocking at the door. Apple rolled her eyes, sighing tiredly. "For Grimm's sake, who is this time?"
Daphne Tremaine, the next Stepsister, crossed her arms. "If another person barges in, I swear to Grimm, heads will roll," she said icily. The doors opened, revealing the faces of several people; Vanya Ella, Holton Hook, Joyce Row, Willow and Scout Waverly, Ali Nimer, Winter Vale, and Ana Tremaine. Daphne's own cousin. "Ana?" Daphne questioned, eyes wide. "I thought I told you to stay put in our dorm while the Rebels were supposed to come to the Student Lounge."
The redheaded Ana shrugged. "I got curious."
Melina's unbleached and arched eyebrows rose. "And what are you?" The Royals had come, then the Rebels, so who were they?
Vanya Ella stiffened, shooting Apple a glance. The awkward tension was palpable, Melina could sense it. "We're kind of in the gray area?" Vanya tried as the boy next to her, Holton, snorted. "We're not Royal or Rebel. We don't want to rewrite our destiny, just... tweak it."
"Ah, so you're Roybels!" Emerick Diggs piped up, glancing up from his device-fiddling. All eyes shifted to him as Emerick continued to tinker with his little invention. "Roybels are the best of both worlds, you know? Embracing your destiny, but just not the path you're supposed to follow. Back me up, eh, Joy?"
Then the attention shifted to a Freedom student in the corner of the room, Joyce Row. "Uh," he said blankly, blinking. He seemed like the Mirror Network's glitches. "Yeah, we're Roybels. That's really it..."
Melina was getting impatient a bit when people started talking over each other, mainly the Rebels and Royals arguing about what's what. If she was to be the next White Queen, she ought to have the same leadership skills as her mother. Strolling up to the coffee table next to the sofa, she greeted Blaise and Ladeline politely before climbing on top of the table.
Blaise gave Melina an amused look. "Your future Majesty, please get down." When that didn't work, he added, "In other words, you're dirtying the table, Lily."
Melina waved a dismissive hand in the air. "Don't be foolish, my mother did this all the time." That was technically a lie, but who was the next White Knight to comment on the next White Queen? She stomped on the table with her foot, gathering everyone's attention. She was half-surprised that it had worked. She cleared her throat, "Ahem, ahem, if I could get everyone's attention. Clearly, some of us aren't mature enough to realize that there is a dangerous thief among us in Ever After High. The Lifairy was burned and the Book was stolenβjeopardizing the destinies of everyoneβand your biggest concern is whether or not you're a Royal, Rebel, or Roybel? Please." Melina hopped down from the table as Raven took the reins.
"Let's start simpleβwe know that the Lifairy's fire was a distraction to get Headmaster Grimm away from his office, so the thief could steal the Book. The thief is powerful, seeing as they could lift Grimm's fail-safe spell on the Lifairy. Also, the glass case in Grimm's office was enchanted..." Raven sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose. "That doesn't narrow it down that much."
"Did anyone see anything strange later that night?" Apple inquired.
Now that I think of it... She had heard odd mutters last night, it was ringing in her ears. Melina's hand went up. She was shocked to see Dahlia's, Winifred's, and Ladeline's hands flew up. "Wait, wait, how come all of you saw something strange?" Daphne asked suspiciously.
"Or like heard," Melina admitted.
"You can hear her too?" Winifred asked incredulously. Melina was stunned, she didn't know anyone else could hear the Narrator. Back in Wonderland, she could hear Nadine clearly and they often interacted. After leaving Wonderland, Nadine's voice faded to nothing, she hadn't heard from the Narrator since. "I've been trying to ignore her for years, but I can always hear her mumbles. Just faintly..."
Ali stood up, an annoyed expression on his face. "Are you going to explain or not?"
"There's something called Narrators, they narrate the story. In fact, I bet Nadineβwhich is our story's Narratorβis reading this aloud as I speak. No one is aware of Narrators, well, except for a few of us. Think of Narrators as a God, just narrating everything you're doing, thinking, and feeling." Dahlia was very good at explanations. "Of course, how each person hears Nadine differs. For me, I developed a good sense of hearing since my dad doesn't speak verbally. Just mildly, I can hear Nadine."
There were a few murmurs of agreement as Ladeline had a confused expression on her face. "Oh, that's how it's supposed to be? Guess I got the short end of the stick." Wait, Melina thought, how does Ladeline hear Nadine? Suddenly, Ladeline produced a small ink bottle from her pockets, uncapping it. "I got a magical artifact and now I can hear Nadine. She's annoying."
Nice to hear from you too, Ladeline. And you didn't just get that magical artifact, you stole it.
"Shush, Nadine," Ladeline said aloud. Everyone stared at her as if she was crazy, maybe because it seemed that Ladeline was talking to thin air to them. Yet, Melina felt comforted to hear Nadine's voice after being away from Wonderland for so long.
"Nadine!" Melina exclaimed. "It's most wondrous to hear from you again."
Your Riddlish accent has diminished, Nadine observed. Always lovely to see you, Melina, though I've been quite busy. "I guessed," Melina replied, laughing.
"You sound madder than the Mad Hatter," Blaise deadpanned. "No offense, Vesperina."
Vesperina arched an eyebrow. "Some taken."
"You can't hear Nadine even with the ink bottle open?" Ladeline asked disappointedly. There were shaking of heads and lots of 'no's. She rolled her eyes, sighing. "Fine, we'll be your translators. Nadine, we heard you muttering last night. By the way, I couldn't get a wink of sleep because of you. What was that about?"
Well, it's a long story. But, alas, I am still a Narrator. I know the ending to this story, but I mustn't spoil it. Though, this is the part of the book where I explain what happened to the Storybook of Legends. "Nadine knows what happened to the Book!" Winifred said excitedly, telling the message to everyone else.
Apple let out an audible sigh of relief. "Thank Grimm! Er, keep asking your Narrator friend what's going on."
I can't say too much, but I had to intervene with the plot, I-I couldn't let all these bad things happen to you! I had to rewrite the story! Rewrite the story? This was all very vague information, Melina assumed.
Well, of course it's vague because of plot armour, Melina.
"I'm not an expert in Narrator affairs," Dahlia spoke up, "but isn't interfering with a story breaking the rules?"
Yes, Dahlia, it is, Nadine answered gravely. But what is done can not be changed, I just hope this was a good decision. I rewrote chapters of the story, I scattered the pages of the Book all across the Fairytale World. But... There was an ink spill, uhm, I sort of messed up...
"That's what the dark sky was!" Nik blurted out, eyes wide. Melina stole a glance at the window, seeing how the cloud darkened and a strange black plague was devouring the skies. Seeping in like ink, Melina realized.
I don't actually know the exact locations of the pages, Nadine admitted.
When Winifred exchanged what Nadine had said, there was a shift in everyone's demeanour. "Even Nadine doesn't know where the Book is," Melina said miserably. They were back at square one then.
Hey, hold your horses. I don't know where exactly, but the pages have appeared in six different locationsβHood Hollow, the Dark Forest, Wonderland, Top of the World, Neverland, and Emerald City. Where exactly in those locations are the pages? I don't have a royal clue, but this is all I can reveal for Narrators can not meddle in the storyline's affairs too much. Farewell and good luck, my Royals, Rebels, and Roybels!
Suddenly, Melina blinked and her sourrings went silent. "Nadine?" she asked, but no voice answered her. Great, she's back to ignoring us. She supposed Narrators had duties to fulfill. "Well, Nadine can't help us much more, but she gave us important information," she told everyone. "The pages are hidden across Hood Hollow, the Dark Forest, Wonderland, Top of the World, Neverland, and Emerald City."
Apple clapped her hands in delight. "That's a great start!"
"But after the Evil Queen cursed Wonderland, Grimm had to close all the portals to other realms," Chase Redforth said, shaking his head. "No offense, though, Raven. My point is, we'll have a very hard time trying to travel to other locations."
"Let's start small and worry about the rest later," Raven said, walking over to the bookshelves in the Student Lounge. She grabbed a map and muttered an enchantant, summoning a large imitation of the map in the air for everyone to see clearly, almost like a magical projector. "Hood Hollowβwhere Little Red Riding Hood's family and wolves liveβis a small village south of Ever After, but it's a day's journey to get there."
"It's also very old and medieval," James Hood added. "Hood Hollow lacks technology and other resources. My great-grandma is the Ruler of Hood Hollow though, I bet she could help us find the missing pages."
Raven snapped her fingers. "That's exactly the spirit we're looking for, James. See? Every problem has a solution. Okay, and for the Dark Forest, it's relevantly close to Ever After High. Wait, don't the Candy Witch and Dark Fairy live there?"
Ravenna let out a sigh. "Yeah, my mom lives there. Though, she won't be much of an assistance. She stays in a run-down castle deep in the Dark Forest, but she watches everyone like a hawk..."
"Okay, so we got Hood Hollow and the Dark Forest locked down. Now, our biggest concern is Wonderland, Top of the World, Neverland, and Emerald City." Raven glanced back at everyone. "Got any suggestions?"
Scarlett Rouge cleared her throat. Melina's heart faltered as she watched her cousin with a close eye. "If I remember correctly, there was one portal to Wonderland that was left unsealed. The Well of Wonders, in fact. Though, the tricky part is that the Well of Wonders never stays in the same location more than five minutes. It'll vanish and reappear before we could even get the chance to secure it, much less find it."
Maxwell Hearts spoke up. "Actually, I have a map gifted from my mother, the Queen of Hearts. It shows the location of the Well of Wonders, it could be useful."
"Well, that's settled," Apple said, checking something off her list. Wait, where did she get a list from...? Well, Melina supposed Apple was always an overplanner. "For the Top of the World, that might get difficult. Winter? How can we get to your mom's kingdom? Well, I guess queendom, really."
Melina had forgotten that Winter Vale was in the same room as them. He was mute, he didn't talk too much. He took the notepad from Apple's hands, writing down something before handing it back. "There's usually strong snow storms that are so powerful that they create snow tornadoes. They're harmless, really, but they're powerful enough to send something to the Snow Queen's realm," Apple read aloud. "Okay, check. Got any ideas, Winifred, for Neverland?"
Holton rolled his eyes. "Of course, you'd ask the next Wendy Darling for her opinion. Good thinking to ignore the rest of the Neverland kiddos, Apple White."
"I don't see you raising up your hand, you prick," Violet Bell spat out. "Continue, Winnie."
Winifred looked at the map wistfully. "Well, I always travelled to Neverland with my mum by pixie dust. It grants the person the ability to fly, and then I memorize the way to go to Neverland. Easy fix if I'm honest."
"Hexcellent news," Apple said happily, "and what about the Emerald City?"
Emerick raised his hand. "I've been experimenting with a tornado-recreation device, it might be able to send us to Emerald City to retrieve the Book's lost pages. I'm almost done, it'll just take another few hours of tinkering."
Melina was rather pleased. "Now, that's a plan."

Scout Waverly's POV
Scout was overwhelmed while everyone continued to talk over each other, making too much noise. It was pressing on his buttons. "Are you sure you aren't hurt?" he asked his sister. He was horrified to see that Willow had come back into their dorm covered in soot and ashes.
"Please, I'm made of tougher stuff than that, little brother." Willow teasingly punched Scout in the shoulder. It was nice having a twin, it was like having another half of you, just slightly different. Willow and Scout both shared wavy brown hair, a pale complexion, and hazel eyes. "Ugh, look at these idiots arguing with each other." Then Willow nudged Scout. "And there's your crush," she taunted.
"Shut up, now you're just embarrassing me." Scout didn't need to hear more about his massive crush on Emerick Diggs, much less be in the same room as him. It doesn't matter, he thought hopelessly. Emerick doesn't like guys. Willow was the only person who knew Scout was gay, but Scout was terrified that if he confessed, he would out himself to a straight boy who didn't even like him back. Yikes...
"That's what a sister's for," she teased back.
"Let's settle down and get things in order," Blaise announced to silence everyone, slightly irritated from the noisy surroundings. Scout didn't blame him, it was often intolerable. He took ahold of Apple's notepad and pen, jotting something down. "Firstly, we need to split everyone up into groups. If we wish to get the missing pages of the Storybook of Legends back and clear Raven's name, then we need to divide and conquer."
Ladeline hovered over him, which made Blaise more annoyed. He clicked his pen. "Firstly, Hood Hollow. So Red Cap, Bubba, Cupcake, Rubber Ducky, and Sweetpea can go to Hood Hollow considering Red Cap knows everything about the village."
Everyone gave Blaise a weird stare.
"The fuck?" Holton asked, breaking the silence.
"He's Wonderlandian and Riddlish is his first language, so he tends to give everyone a personal nickname. Basically, Blaise is saying that James, Joy, Ana, and Nik will go to Hood Hollow to retrieve the pages," Melina Ivory translated.
"Hold on, why am I called Bubba?" Joy questioned meekly.
"I'm called Sweetpea? Sweet." Essie gave a dark laugh. "I'm so ready to beat up a wolf in Hood Hollow."
"Let's not," James insisted. "I'm going to ban you from beating up wolves."
"Bet."
"No, no, Ana is not going to Hood Hollow," Daphne said sternly, glancing at her cousin. Scout observed Anaβshe had ginger frizzy curls, fair complexion, a bit chubby, and had a snubby nose. Compared to Daphneβblack-haired with paler skin and a slightly crooked noseβthere was a difference. Not appearance-wise, but personality-wise. If Scout was honest, Daphne scared him a bit. Her cold glares could cut through steel and she was wicked scary when competitive.
Ana? She often blindly followed her cousin's footsteps, though Scout supposed she was kinder. She was gentle and sweet, but she could be insanely bitter and envious. The next Wicked Stepsisters were intimidating, intentional or not.
Daphne rolled her eyes. "You are not going to Hood Hollow, it's risky and quite frankly dangerous," she told Ana. "Also, there are wolves there, Ana."
"The wolves are nothing but dangerous!" James protested, disappointed. Strange, Scout thought to himself. The next Little Red Riding Hood isn't afraid of wolves, but rather protective of them. Why was Jameson Hood a Rebel again? Scout never found out why he wasn't a Royal.
"Shut up," Daphne snapped back.
"Daph, it's okay," Ana said gently, smiling nervously as she placed a comforting hand on Daphne's shoulder. "You're always saying I should get out of my dorm." Sounds like someone I know, Scout though, glancing at Willow. Having an extraverted sister as an introverted person was always a fight. "Ne vous inquiΓ©tez pas, je suis sΓ»r que Hood Hollow n'est pas si dangereux. Γcoute, j'ai besoin de cette soi-disant quΓͺte pour me dΓ©barrasser d'un peu de poids sur les Γ©paules..." The cousins continued to converse in French.
"Alright, let's continue," Blaise said loudly, jotting notes down. "For the Dark Forest, let's send Queenie, Froggy, Beastie, Mad Head, and Thorny."
"Apple, Stella, Bree, Vesperina, and Rav," Melina clarified.
Vesperina giggled, clapping her hands. "Girls' trip! Oh! Shall I bring Earl Gray or Lavender?"
"Don't lose your head," Rav snorted.
"Both of them, I agree with you," Vesperina said. Well, she is mad after all, Scout thought.
Blaise continued, "Homestretch, people. Of course, Sweetooth has the map to the Well of Wonders, so he has to go to Wonderland. Chess Pawn, Lily, Duchess, and Rosy can accompany Sweetooth." Maxwell, Chase, Melina, Scarlett, and Dahlia. Scout was starting to see the pattern.
"I mean, you sort of got my name. Close enough to dahlias, I guess, but roses?" Dahlia asked.
Blaise wrinkled his nose. "That's not why I call you Rosy...? I think all of you are mad..."
Melina's perfectly arched eyebrows flew up as she asked Blaise, "Why aren't you coming to Wonderland? Don't you want to see your father again? There's a chance that the White Knight is still... uhm, alive."
Blaise's knuckles whitened as he gripped the pen, averting his gaze to the notepad. "I'm never going back to Wonderland again, Lily." Rather anxiously, he quickly changed the subject. "For Top of the World, we of course need Ice Cube to lead the way seeing as its his mother's queendom."
Scout saw the way that Winter's face darkened, but he didn't object. Or maybe that's because he's mute, dumbass, Scout's mind told him. I really need to stop having fights in my head with myself, he thought.
"Blackbird, Puppet Master, and Kelp can join Ice Cube up in the Top of the world." Raven, Luka, and Lyric Seabrooke, Scout translated in his head. Blaise rolled his eyes as Ladeline hovered over his shoulder, eagerly trying to take a peek at the notepad. "Fine; Me, Eline, Hopster, Nightlight, Undying, and Toothless are going to Neverland." Ladeline, Winifred, Nari, Tristan, andβ
"What?! Why am I called Toothless? I have all my teeth, don't make me prove it!" Willow demanded, her jaw wide open and her cheeks flushed. Scout doubled over in a fit of giggles as Willow scowled. "Shush, Scout."
"Lastly, we have Emerald City." Blaise rubbed his eyes tiredly as he announced, "Gearhead, Persinette, Hellfire, and Teethful." Emerick, Marigold, Aurelio, and... Scout realized that he was Teethful. "And that's a wrap, folks," Blaise said, leaving the notepad up for grabs.
"Wait, you're not coming to Neverland with me?" Willow asked, stunned. Scout was rethinking his entire life as Willow blabbed on how he could possibly end up hurt if she wasn't within arm's reach. Could he even handle being away from Willow that long? He'd be lonely. But...
Scout glanced at Emerick who was still tinkering with whatever device he had. If he went to the Emerald City with him to get the lost pages, they could spend more time together. A truly devious plan. "It's okay, Willow. I'll go to Emerald City. I have a feeling that this will be good."
"Don't jinx yourself."
