I'll take three Furies fried and steamed
Annabeth, Percy, Grover, Logan, and I were riding with Argus for a while, looking at the different sights Long Island had to offer. Living in my hometown, you can only dream of traveling to New York on vacation. The fact that I can see this, even just once, feels special to me.
I heard Percy take a deep breath. "So far so good," he said. "Not a monster in sight."
Annabeth turned to him. "You can't say that," she told him. "It's bad luck."
Percy sat up as he stared at Annabeth. "Remind me again why you hate me?"
Annabeth didn't answer him, so he began talking once again.
"I mean, you weren't acting like this until I got claimed," he told her. "Why is it all of a sudden a now thing?"
Annabeth huffed. "It's an Athena and Poseidon thing," she told him. "They're rivals."
"Why?"
"What more reason do you need?" she asked him. "First Athena caught Poseidon with his mistress in her temple, and then they fought over the right to be the patron of the city of Athena. Poseidon gave the people spring water, while Athena gave the people an Olive tree. They liked Athena's gift more, so they chose her."
Logan looked at me. "Really?" he asked. I nodded. "Wow."
"The people must really like Olives," Percy said.
"Forget it," Annabeth groaned.
"But why Olives of all things?" Logan asked. "Why not pizza?"
"Yeah," Percy agreed. "I mean, if she made pizza, that I would understand."
"Oh gods," I groaned.
"I said forget it," Annabeth repeated. She then turned back around and snapped open her book and began to read it. I then decided to take out my own book to pass the time.
It was silent once again. We stopped at a red light and stayed there for three minutes. I finally took it upon myself to look out the window at the passing cars and I swear I felt my eyes playing tricks on me.
I noticed people, obviously, but most of them were blue and looked...transparent. There was one in an outfit from what looked like the 1800s yelling at the cars that were in front of him.
Don't thy notice thee walking here! You barbarians have no sense of manners! He yelled.
Yeah, I'm pretty sure I'm hallucinating right now, but when I tried clearing my head, they were still there. What am I seeing right now?
There was a lot of people, some riding horses, some trying to talk to the people, but they were just being ignored, which angered them. I also saw some of them holding their own head while passing me, it scared me so bad.
But even then, I kept looking, they paid me no mind as they strolled the street but it wasn't vice versa.
I was still until I felt someone poke me for a few minutes. I didn't pay them any mind until they pinched my skin hard.
"Agh!" I yelped as I looked at Logan who pulled his hand away. I quickly smacked him in the chest. "What was that for?"
"I was telling you about how this stop light has been like this for five minutes," he motioned towards the stoplight before looking back at me. "But you zoned off, what is out there?"
I groaned before looking out the window once again. "I see these...people."
"Obviously," Percy spoke.
"Duh, SpongeBob," I said back. "But these people are...blue and see through."
"See through?" Grover asked.
Annabeth looked at me for a moment before her eyes widened. "Oh, that has to be a Hades thing."
"Hades thing?"
"Yeah," she told me. "Hades has control over the dead so it would be possible that his children do as well. I think that's only the first of it."
"Ah..." I muttered. "Well, it's weird."
Logan scoffed. "Lucky," he said. "The only thing I know how to do is blow up a fire hydrant."
Percy chuckled. "Well, it's better than blowing up a toilet."
"Is your whole shtick going to be blowing up something?" Grover asked Logan and Percy, both of whom shrugged.
I shook my head and decided to stay silent for the rest of the ride.
After ten minutes we arrived at Greyhound Station on the Upper East side of Long Island. We unloaded our bags, got our tickets, and watched as Argus drove away. He opened his back eyes to watch us as he dove out of sight. I waved at him as he drove off. He waved back as he turned the corner and was out of sight for good.
We rested at a bus station while the rain fell on us. Percy, Logan, Annabeth, and Grover took the time to play a little Hacky-Sack. I didn't play since I'd rather do anything else.
After a few minutes of them playing, the game ended when Percy passed the apple to Grover. It got too close to his mouth and soon the apple disappeared, stem and all. Grover tried to apologize but Annabeth, Logan, and Percy were too busy laughing at him. I was just trying to tune them out.
Finally, the bus arrived and all of us hopped on the bus and walked to the very back of it.
I can finally go to sleep! But of course, that had to get ruined.
I looked at the last few people who were boarding the bus. One of them was an elderly woman with a velvet dress, lace gloves, an orange knit had, and a large paisley purse. She turned her heads towards us, and I felt my blood run cold.
I looked at Percy and saw him shift closer down in his seat.
Logan nudged me and what I saw made me wish I refused this quest.
Walking onto the bus were two more women identical to the first woman. The only difference is that one of them had a green hat and the other had a purple hat. The one with the green hat snapped her head towards Logan and me. I quickly put my head down, avoiding her gaze and Logan was doing the same.
I made the mistake of looking up cause then I saw two of the grandmas in front of us making an X with their legs. A clear sign that no one leaves.
After a minute, Percy finally spoke. "I thought you said they take years to regenerate!" he whispered to me and Annabeth.
"We said if you're lucky," Annabeth whispered back. "Which you're obviously not!"
"Luck?" Logan said suddenly. "Never heard of it."
I sighed. "Well, we have to get out of here," I said. "We'll slip out the window."
Grover then started to check the windows.
Percy huffed. "I guess you dad sent us a 'congrats on your first quest' gift." he told me. I resisted the urge to punch him, but I still pinched him in the arm, making him wince.
"They can't open," Grover told us.
"Shit!" I muttered. "Back doors?"
We looked back. There wasn't any. That just made me angrier.
"Okay," Logan muttered. "So, we can't get out from the back, then?"
"We just have to fight them head on, then. In order to get out." I decided.
"But they won't fight us with all these people around, right?" Percy asked.
"Mist obscures the minds of mortals, remember?" I asked Percy. "Don't know what they'll see they do attack us."
"They would see three old ladies attacking us, won't they?"
"Or they'll see us attacking three defenseless old ladies," Annabeth told him. "It's hard to say for sure."
I started fiddling with my bracelet, which I was surprised was still on my wrist. Everything got quiet as we hit the Lincoln Tunnel. The only sound coming from anything was the rain beating down outside.
The first Fury, Alecto, got up. In a flat voice, she announced: "I need to use the restroom."
"So do I," the second sister chimed in.
"So do I," the third sister added.
Then all three of them started down the aisle.
"Uh, the bathroom is that way," Logan told them, pointed behind them.
Annabeth then unfolded her hat. "Percy, take my hat," Annabeth told him.
"What?"
I realized what she was doing. "It's you they want, Percy. Turn Invisible and go up the aisle." I then turned to Logan. "You try to see if you can crawl under the seats. Maybe you two can get away."
"What no!" Logan protested.
"But you guys-"
"It's a high chance they'll kill us," I admitted. "But you two are sons of The Big three. Your smell is stronger."
"And Heather won't get hurt since she's a daughter of Hades. The furies work for her dad and can't risk getting in trouble with him."
"Well, since the green one almost killed me six months ago, I don't think she'll care about my status that much."
"We just can't leave you!" Percy told us.
"You don't have a choice," I snapped. "It's you leave or get killed. Now go!"
Annabeth shoved the cap on Percy's head and Logan, despite protesting, ducked under the seats and started crawling under them.
The furies, who were coming closer to us, stopped abruptly and started sniffing the air. They then looked at an empty seat. Maybe that's where Percy was, but even then, they just stood there. And after a long, antagonizing moment, they finally moved and once again came advancing towards us again.
They then took out three long whips. The same ones I saw the green one with not long ago.
"Where is it?" Alecto snarled, lashing her whip.
Annabeth, Grover, and I looked at each other.
"He's not here," Annabeth told them, but they kept coming closer.
The green one, Tisiphone, finally noticed me and looked me down for a minute before grinning, her grayish-yellow teeth showing.
"Lookie here," she snarled. "You're actually alive."
"Yeah, well, you're not, so who actually has the last laugh?" I asked, not even thinking about my words.
Tisiphone growled at me. "You are lucky, girl."
"If you're here then I guess I'm not."
That made her angrier cause she finally launched herself at me. I rolled away from her, letting her crash into the back seat. She got up quickly and tried to attack me again, but I was just as fast as she was.
I didn't have any weapons since I gave it to Logan, so I was just trying to dodge her. Was this how Percy felt with the Minotaur? Well then.
I noticed Annabeth and Grover, who were fighting off Alecto and Megaera. They looked like they were fighting the two off pretty well, but I can't take any chances.
I looked at my bracelet. I didn't know what I was going to do, but I pressed the center regardless and just as Tisiphone was going to attack me, I grabbed an arrow and struck her arm with it, making gold blood spill out.
While she was angry, I was surprised. So, it has a backup? Guess Apollo does plan ahead. Unlike the gold arrow and quiver I gave to Logan; this was silver with the white tip still attached. So cool!
I readied my arrow, and I was about to launch it at her until suddenly, the bus yanked to the side. I yelled as I was thrown to the side, accidentally letting go of the arrow. It flew across the bus and hit Megaera in the back, quickly turning her into dust. Well, task failed successfully, I guess.
Everyone screamed as they were thrown to the other side of the bus. I turned towards the bus driver and noticed he was fighting with an invisible force. I knew it was Percy.
Once the bus got steady again, I stood up and readied my arrow once again. Fortunately, Tisiphone was still trying to kill me, and it was the same on my end.
As she threw herself at me, I launched my arrow, piercing it square in her chest. She fell on the floor and turned into dust very quickly.
I picked up my arrow and noticed there was a gold one beside mine. I sighed before turning around where Logan was walking towards me. I smiled before holding up my hand for a high-five. He smiled back at me before giving me a high-five. It took me a while to realize that everyone ran off of the bus, including the driver.
"Two down, one to go," I muttered.
A voice appeared behind us. "Hey!"
The five us, including Alecto, turned to see Percy appearing behind us. He took out his pen and revealed Riptide. She hesitated for a moment before growling at him.
"On second thought, let's have Percy handle this," I said before pulling Logan aside.
Alecto marched towards Percy. "Perseus Jackson, you have offended the gods. You shall die."
"I liked you better as a math teacher," Percy told her, making her growl at him.
"Submit!" she yelled. "And you won't suffer eternal torment!"
"Nice try!" he yelled before taking Riptide and swiping it at Alecto.
Alecto took out her whip and lashed it at Percy. He dodged it and managed to kick her in the chest. Grover then tried to grab the whip from Alecto's hands and actually succeeded.
"Oh, oh, hot! Hot!" he yelped.
Annabeth grabbed her dagger and tried to slice at Alecto, but she just tossed her aside. She wasn't hurt but she did have a scratch on her face, which I visibly winced at.
"Okay we're done," I muttered as I grabbed an arrow and hopped over the seats to get in front of Alecto and beside Annabeth and Grover. I grabbed the whip from Grover and used it to hit her when she was distracted. I then used the whip to tie her legs together. Annabeth kicked her down. Alecto tried to get up, but her wings wouldn't give her any room to fly, so she stayed down.
"Hades will have your soul!" she yelled.
"Braccas means vescimini!" he yelled back. I resisted the urge to groan at him.
"What does that mean?" Logan asked me.
"It means eat my pants," I said plainly.
Logan opened his mouth to say something else, but thunder sounded outside.
"Get out, now!" Annabeth yelled.
None of us thought twice as we all ran out of the bus and stopped towards the entrance of the woods.
"O-our bags!" Grover realized. "We left our-"
As he was about to finish, thunder struck the bus, causing it to go up in in flames. We heard the screams of Alecto from the flames, letting us know she was still alive.
Without thinking, I put my hand in my pocket and took out the folded pic of mom. I sighed in relief.
"We have to go," Annabeth told us. "She's calling for reinforcements."
We then ran into the forest in front of us, ignoring the darkness that was to consume us as we walked further.
