I get assaulted by an owl
[LOGAN'S POV]
Was I lying when I said I forgave my sister? Uhh...kind of. Yes, I was mad that she left me (no that was still not the reason I flooded the entire camp, I will explain that later), but she did come back despite her saying that she wouldn't, and though it wasn't on my accord, it still felt nice to see her again after a year. But that still doesn't deny the fact that she left me alone, yeah, I wasn't entirely alone, but it still hurt to not get a message or letter from her, but I didn't send one either, so I guess that makes me just as guilty.
Earlier that day, Tantalus, the new activities director in place of Chiron, brought back the Chariot Races. I'm not participating in it for obvious reasons, but I could see that other people were not excited for it at all, especially not the Apollo and Aphrodite kids but either way, we're doing it and we have him to thank for that unfortunately.
What else happened today? Oh, I have a brother...who is a cyclops...oh joy. Yeah, I'm happy to have another sibling but when it's a monster, I don't know if I should be happy that Poseidon is just out here claiming kids left and right, and it's ones who he didn't even know existed until they did some sort of heroic deed or get embarrassed in front of everyone, both of which happened to my dear old younger brothers here.
Speaking of brothers, I noticed Percy laying on top of a bunk bed beside mine, staring at the ceiling. The cyclops was on the bottom bunk for obvious reasons just snoring loudly as he slept. Once I realized he was actually asleep, I looked at Percy.
"It sucks huh?" Percy looked at me, giving me a confused frown. I then motioned to the cyclops under him. "Our father is just picking and choosing at this point. Now anybody can be his child. Even a nasty cyclops."
Percy's frown deepened as he stared at me. "Tyson is many things, but he isn't nasty."
I gave him a deadpan look. "He was found inside of an empty refrigerator, and if Polyphemus is anything to go by-"
"Tyson isn't Polyphemus," Percy interrupted, not sitting up in his bed.
I scoffed. "Yeah, I can see that." I smirked. "And smell it too."
Percy was angry at this point, but I could care less.
"You and Annabeth always want to bully Tyson for something he can't help being."
"We aren't bullying him, we're just being honest, Percy," I sat up as well. "And I saw that you were quite embarrassed when he got claimed too. I wasn't the only one."
"Yeah, but that doesn't mean you have to make his life a living hell!" Percy yelled. "I get that you are mad at Heather, but you don't have to take it out on Tyson."
I raised my eyebrow. "I'm not mad at Heather."
"Yeah right, you didn't even talk to her at all, you even burned the letters she sent you–or tried to send you and never responded to them."
"I have my own reasons for ignoring my sister," I said, rolling around in my bed. "And I talked to her an hour ago, we made up."
"Yeah, to you."
I scoffed as I started to ignore him. His eyes glued to the back of my head as I started to drift off to sleep.
Cyclops or not, I know one thing's for sure: I am not calling this monster my brother.
[HEATHER'S POV]
After the semi-normal day I had yesterday, I was immediately woken up from my cabin by none other than the queen of horrible anger issues herself, Zoë Nightshade. She had a large falcon on her shoulder who was staring me down with a murderous glare. Can falcon's glare? I mean, eagles certainly can, I had the unfortunate luck to meet one once (no I am not explaining that) so I'm going to conclude that they can.
"Lady Artemis wants to meet thou in her tent before our run in the next hour," Zoë told me. "She said to get there quickly, as it is important."
With that Zoë and her falcon walked out of my cabin, leaving me alone as I just got up and prepared myself.
I had the chance to meet my grandaunt Artemis once I arrived at camp. She was really nice to her huntresses, treating them like her own daughters, but I saw her 'i-want-to-murder-this-man-in-cold-blood' stare way more times than I could count, which makes her a lot more badass once you think about it.
Once I stepped out of my cabin, I noticed the other girls starting on their chores, with a few of them heading off into the woods to start on some hunting before the others, with Zoë walking after them. I waved to her, and she waved back as I finally entered Artemis's tent.
Her tent is way bigger than any of the cabins in the camp, which is expected for a goddess, but it was more house-like than what I thought a tent would be like. Her walls were a light maroon color, her ceiling had a bunch of glass sculptures of animals, her desks here lined up with different bows and arrows, and there was even a small fireplace towards the back. It looked like a mix of home and a war preparation center, and I kind of liked it.
Eris, who I didn't even know woke up, I thought she was still asleep, started rubbing against my leg, which is what she always does when she needs attention, so I picked her up and started scratching her and she just licked my face as I looked around.
"Uh, Lady Artemis!" I called out but was hearing no one. "Uh, Zoë said you wanted me to talk to you about something before we went hunting today. I just..."
I felt some eyes on me, so I looked around until I was met with a pair of small, glowing eyes staring back at me. I was just looking back at it, which was making its glow more intense.
"Uh, hi," I waved sheepishly. "I come in peace. I was just, uhh, looking for Lady Artemis."
At the mention of her name, the creature unfurled its wings, that's when I realized it was an owl. Though owls are more chilling animals, some were given to the huntresses for protection and when they are used for protection, they are practically unstoppable, which makes them scarier. Which is probably the reason why Athena has them as her sacred animal.
I was about to say something until the owl suddenly launched itself at me, scratching my face and tugging at my hair. I was able to grab one of the feet and threw them to the ground. Its wings then got stuck to the bottom of one of the drawers somehow, so I had time to heal myself and summon my bow and arrow in case it attacked again.
"You are..." I panted breathlessly. "Not supporting the claims that owls are the best animals."
Eris clawed at my leg, I looked at the cat under me and let out a breath.
"If this is a test of strength, Lady Artemis, then honestly, this is the worst test ever."
I didn't have time to look when the owl just jumped up and tried to attack me again, this time black smoke consumed me and when I cleared, I saw a giant Eris and the owl having a brawl. Although Eris was bigger than the owl, the owl was easily gaining the upper hand, after about three minutes, Eris finally grabbed the owl with her teeth and pinned the owl down by its wings, growling at it. Eris then looked my way, like she was trying to ask me if she should eat the owl or not, which I thought was probably a bad idea.
"Uhh, let's just keep it like that until Lady Artemis comes, okay?" I asked. "Then if she gives you the okay, then you can...eat it."
Eris let out a small meow, like my answer satisfied her. I just walked over to a nearby chair and sat down, watching the owl closely until Artemis came.
I wish Lady Artemis gave me the ability to speak to animals, she only gave that to her more skilled huntresses. I was good at a bow and arrow, yes, but I wouldn't say I was skilled compared to hunters that were already here before me. It would've been so cool if I could talk to animals, then this would've been so much easier.
Thankfully, I noticed a certain red head walking into the tent. I immediately walked next to her. Luckily, she was in her twelve-year-old form, so I didn't have to look up when talking to her.
"Uh, Lady Artemis," I said before bowing a bit. "You said you wanted to talk to me?"
Artemis nodded. "I did," she motioned to the chair I was just at. "Take a seat."
I immediately sat back down in the chair; my eyes focused on Artemis as she took her place in a chair next to mine. She noticed Eris and the owl, and a small smile formed on her face, though it wasn't much.
"I see you met our new arrival." she said, gesturing to the owl.
I chuckled nervously. "Uh, yeah," I sighed. "It tried to, uh, attack me–twice. The second time Eris turned big and started attacking the owl, which led to the owl getting pinned down by the wings. Eris was waiting for you to come back so she can, uh...eat it."
Lady Artemis looked at the scene in front of her for a moment before she shook her head. "Let the owl go," she told Eris. reluctantly, Eris let go of the owl. Artemis then turned to the owl. "Good, now I will heal you, and once I do, go and find Abigail, you will be her protector."
The owl made a small noise as it flew towards Artemis and plopped down in her lap. She spoke a healing spell in Greek, which put a white glow in the owl as she healed its wings. The owl chirped, like it was thanking her, and flew off and out of the tent, trying to find Abigail. Both Artemis and I watched as the owl left our sights.
"My apologies regarding the attack," Artemis spoke, turning my attention to her.
"Oh, uh, it's no problem," I said. "I wasn't expecting it, but it wasn't my first time getting scratched by a bird-like creature, so it's not a big issue to me."
Artemis nodded as she stared at the entrance. "I have been alerted about a presence, not now, but in the near future."
My brows narrowed as I looked at the goddess. "Presence?" I asked. "Is it-"
"We can't know for sure." she told me. "But the other Olympians, as well as I, believe that it may be a possibility if anything."
I shuddered. I knew what she was talking about. Kronos. Last year Logan, Percy, Annabeth, Grover, and I almost went down a pit that was actually the entrance to Tartarus. Then we found out that Kronos was controlling Ares, getting the blame put on him for stealing the master bolt and the Helm of Darkness from Zeus and Hades respectively. Then it was revealed that Luke was the one who stole the bolt and is working for Kronos. I guess the Olympians finally had a meeting discussing it since she's bringing it up with me. Wait, why is she bringing up with me? I asked her that exact question.
Artemis was silent for a moment. It made her look like she was nothing but a ghost. But then she spoke.
"Hades informed me of your quest during our last meeting," she told me. "You are powerful, but you have some potential. There was also a strong scent coming from within the waters, specifically, the Sea of Monsters (roll credits)."
I was quiet for a moment, trying to just process everything. "Okay so, you want me to go into the Sea of Monsters and find this 'strong scent' and inform you about what's going on? What if I find nothing or what if I find something you're not looking for?"
"You will," she assured me. "I don't quite know what it is yet, but I'm sure whatever is in the Sea of Monsters will help you to stop the titan of time from rising any quicker."
I was just taking this all in. What am I supposed to find in the Sea of Monsters that Artemis thinks is so important? Before I could ask any more questions, Artemis spoke again.
"And, just to make sure you're safe, I will send you to Camp Half-Blood until it's time for you to depart."
Okay now I was more stunned. "Camp Half-Blood?" I asked. "Why there? Wouldn't it be quicker if I just went now? Or tomorrow?"
"Yes, but it'll be better if you took a while to get everything assembled before going on this quest."
"Can't I just get everything assembled here?"
Artemis sighed. "While I appreciate your abundance of questions, there isn't enough time to answer them. I want you to be prepared as quickly as possible, and in case you need it, I will give you this."
She placed a hand on mine and a white glow appeared over both of ours. Once she let go I was confused for a moment until I heard Eris groan. Wait, can cats groan? That sounds weird.
"Man, all that and I still can't have that brute feather-brained for breakfast?" she complained. "What a rip-off!"
I was taken aback. I kept looking between her and Artemis. "D-did she just..."
Artemis nodded. "I gave you the temporary ability to speak to animals, along with a few other abilities to help with your quest."
I nodded. "This is...very confusing."
"I'll say," Eris groaned. "I'm still hungry!"
"We'll eat later!" I told her. I then looked at Artemis. "So...when do I leave?"
"After we start breakfast and finish our hunt for today, which shouldn't take long. I suggest you get Zoë, and the others gathered to start with breakfast."
I nodded again as she and I stood up, Eris not far behind. "You really think I can do this by myself? Remember I've only been a huntress for a few months."
"I know," she said. "But, like all of my huntresses, I have faith in you, I know you will do your best and make the hunt proud."
I let out a shaky breath, gripping my bow tightly. I then looked up at Artemis and gave her a nod.
"I will do my best."
Hopefully my best will be enough.
((A/N): Eris is voiced by Rheagan Rizio. if you don't know who she is, look her up and come back to me cause she is amazing)
