Camp Half-blood: an illegal foster care
"Demigods!" the centaur said cheerfully. "Welcome to Camp Half-blood!"
Nelly and Grover walked to his side. Nelly hugged the centaur before she turned back to us.
"Heather, Logan, meet Chiron," she introduced. "The trainer of heroes and the activities director at Camp Half-blood!"
Chiron chuckled before taking a look at our faces. "We would give you a tour, but for now you need to go to the infirmary."
"Why?" Logan asked. "We're fine."
I'm not. I said to myself, though I couldn't tell them that.
Chiron looked at Logan' face and neck, which had scratches all over from the fury attacking him. Logan winced when he tried to touch his face.
"I'm surprised no one touched on this earlier," Chiron muttered.
"My apologies, Chiron," Grover said sheepishly. "We had too much going on."
"That's alright," Chiron told him. "Penelope, take these two to the infirmary. Grover, I have to speak to you."
Grover's face paled once again as he followed Chiron towards the entrance of camp. Nelly stayed behind with me and Logan.
She started rubbing her hands together. "Okay now," she said. "Let's go to the infirmary so one of the Apollo kids can heal you."
Once we walked into camp, I noticed that everything was the way it was in my dream. From the Lava wall to the large house in the front.
I then saw a group of kids run past me. They looked younger than ten and had on orange shirts and beads around their necks.
So kids can stay here all year round without supervision? This was like the New York equivalent of a foster care system.
We finally reached the infirmary and it looked like a regular infirmary at Perry's Cottage, but it was brighter and more vibrant than Perry's Cottage but this one looked like it could be a lot more dangerous since I saw a lot of swords out in the fields.
We noticed a lot of kids with blonde hair and blue eyes taking care of the campers. I guessed that they were Apollo kids since he's the god of healing and medicine.
Speaking of healing, I looked down at my hands and noticed that the black veins on my hands were growing. What does this mean? This only started happening after I talked to that woman in my dream. What did she do to me?
I tucked my hands in my pockets as we walked into the infirmary. There we met a kid who looked 9 wrapping bandages on a kid who looked ten years older than him.
"And it's...done!" he said as he finished wrapping the bandages on the kid. "I advise you not to do any more training until it heals. Doctor's orders."
The older kid groaned but said nothing in protest as he limped off towards the woods.
The kid doctor wiped his hands before he finally noticed us. He gave us a big smile and I could see the gap in his teeth which I could admit was cute.
"Oh, hey!" he said. "What happened? Cut by a sword? Stung by the Lava wall?"
"That's allowed?" Logan whispered to me. I just shrugged as we both looked back at the kid.
"We're actually new," I explained. "Uh, he got attacked by a fury. I just got a scratch on my leg."
The boy kept his smile. "Oh, new campers, huh?" he asked. "Well, I'm Will Solace, son of Apollo!"
He held out his hand, which we shook. "I'm Heather Agulera, and this is my brother Logan. We're, uh, undetermined."
Will nodded before grabbing some bandages and a small bottle. "Well then, Heather and Logan, why don't you two sit down on the beds over there."
Logan and I looked to where he was pointing and walking over to one of the beds and sat down. I looked over and noticed that one of the beds was occupied by a boy with brown hair and fair skin. His eyes popped open and he slowly turned his head to me. We stared at each other for a moment before he put his hand up in a shush motion and closed his eyes once again. I nodded before turning back around to Will, who was applying a drop of the liquid from the bottle to a towel.
"A bit or warning," he told Logan. "This is gonna sting a bit."
Will then placed the towel on Logan's face where the scratches were. My brother winced sharply once the medicine touched the open wounds. There was even one over his right eye, which I imagined hurt like hell.
Fortunately, it only lasted for about two minutes and when it did Will finally grabbed some bandages to put over a few of his wounds including the one on his eye.
"And we're done," he said. "It might take a few days to fully heal, and you're gonna have those scars for some time, but hey, at least you can say you actually survived a fury attack."
Logan looked at me before nodding. "I guess you're right," he admitted. "Thanks, Will."
Will smiled brightly. "Sure thing!" he said before turning to me. "Now you."
I looked down at my leg, which was bleeding from the mark on my leg. I pulled it up to let him see. It was a large mark down my left leg which stopped at my ankle up to my thigh. I don't know how I got it but I didn't notice it earlier. I only thought it was just a small scar.
Will winced before grabbing another napkin and putting the same medicine on it and placing it on my leg. It stung but it didn't hurt as bad as I thought it would. Afterwards, Will placed some bandages on my leg. After that, he walked away and came back a few minutes later with two cups.
"Like Logan it's gonna take a few days for the scars to heal," Will said before handing us the cups. "For now, why don't you drink that. It's ambrosia, the food of the Gods."
Logan took a sip from it and I soon followed after. It tasted...amazing! Like freshly baked cookies coming straight out of the oven. It gave me a warm feeling and the headache I was feeling earlier just went away. I drowned down the rest of the ambrosia before giving the cup back to Will.
"That tasted amazing!" I said. "No wonder it's worthy of the Gods."
Logan nodded. "Can I maybe have a bit more? Please!"
Will laughed. "As much as I'd like to, I can't," he said, taking the cup from Logan. "Having more of that will burn you from the inside out."
I nodded. "Understandable." I told him. I then noticed Nelly asleep in one of the chairs. I smirked before looking back at Will. "Uh, what do we do now?" I asked him.
"First you have to check up with Chiron in the Big House. He'll explain to you guys what to do." he explained.
I nodded. "Okay," I said as I went to get up. "Also there's a boy in that bed right there hiding from you."
Will looked over to see the boy with his eyes still closed. The son of Apollo groaned. "Travis, get out of here! You're not even injured!"
The boy, Travis, popped up from his spot and gave me a glare, but I knew it was a playful one.
"You ratted me out!" he said, pointing at me.
"That I did," I admitted.
Travis walked towards me and stood in front of me for a moment before holding a hand out to me.
"You are evil, but I respect it," he said. "I'm Travis Stoll."
I shook his hand. "Heather Agulera."
Travis chuckled. "You are perfect for our group!" he said before running out of the infirmary. "See you in the Hermes' cabin!"
"What group?" I yelled back to him.
"You'll see," he yelled back before disappearing.
I shrugged before Logan groaned. "Great!" he said. "You already have a friend here."
"Will's your friend," I pointed to the younger boy who smiled at us.
"Will's a child," Logan counter pointed.
"Hey!" Will said. "I may be a child but I am mature for my age."
I laughed as Grover appeared at the door.
He was breathing heavily. "Logan, Heather," he said between breaths. "Chiron needs you."
Grover, Logan, and I made it to the Big house where I noticed Chiron in a wheelchair looking like a middle school teacher. I also noticed that there was another man. I recognised him as the one in the leopard suit I saw in my dream.
But he did look familiar in a way I also recognized.
"Mr. Kane?" Logan and I asked in unison, making the man turn to us.
"Oh good, you're alive," Mr. Kane said. "Well, I'm not gonna get to the specifics, so welcome to Camp Half-Blood, blah, blah, blah."
Chiron looked at us and smiled. "Logan, Heather," he said cheerfully. "Looks like Will got you taken care of, huh?"
Logan winced. "It...hurts," he said. "But it could've been worse."
Mr. Kane waved his hand dismissively. "Oh please, be lucky I was there or both of you would've died."
"I don't even know how you could've been there since the gods firmly told you to stay here." Chiron asked.
Mr. Kane rolled his eyes. "Oh well," he said before he glanced back at us. "So, who's your godly parent?"
"We don't know," Logan answered. "We don't know our mom or our dad."
Chiron gave us a sympathetic look before he cleared his throat. "Well, let me take your minds off of this for a while and give you a tour of the camp."
Logan looked at me and I just shrugged. "Okay," he said.
Chiron nodded before getting ready to stand up. We were confused until a white glow came from the wheelchair and from it came out the white body of the centaur.
"Wait," Mr. Kane called out, making Chiron turn to him. "Mind bring me back a drink?"
Chiron sighed. "Mr. D, you know you can't be drinking," he told the younger man.
"Mr. D?" Logan asked.
"Dionysus," Chiron told us.
I took a breath. "God of wine," I said. "And madness."
Mr. Ka-uh, Mr. D, snapped his fingers before pointing to me. "Finally!" he said. "Someone who doesn't make fun of me!"
"People make fun of you?" Logan asked. Mr. D didn't answer that.
I was thinking about something for a moment before I gasped and pulled out a deck of cards as well as a figurine. "Like the Mythomagic game?" I questioned.
Logan groaned as Dionysus gave me a questioning look. "What?" he asked.
"Mythomagic," I said. "It's a game based on Greek Mythology. Why didn't I figure this out earlier? People used to say my mom had this before she-"
My mind finally caught up with my mouth as I finally quieted down and put the cards and figurine back in the bag. "It was uh, something that reminded me of you."
I felt their stares as Logan took my hand. "Uh, how about that tour?" he asked Chiron. The centaur snapped out of his thoughts and nodded as the three of us made our way further away from the Big house.
"Are you okay?" Logan asked me. "It's not like you to just freeze up like that."
"I'm fine," I told him, though I was not fine and he could see it.
"I do not believe that one bit," he said. "Are you really okay?"
I huffed. "I'm fine," I told him once again, this time more firmly.
Logan then scoffed. "Alright," he said before wrapping an arm around me. "But just know that you can talk to me about anything. We're in this together."
I nodded and gave him a small smile, which he gladly returned as we continued the walk.
Chiron showed us the Lava wall, more closely this time, the infirmary once again (we said hi to Will again), and the armory, until he finally showed us the cabins.
There were twelve cabins, obviously representing the twelve Olympians. There was two in the front with five on each side of the two. Those two as well as a silver one and a blue water style one were the only ones that were not messed up while the others were close to falling apart.
We finally got to cabin 11, which was apparently the Hermes cabin. He opened the door and urged us to go in and once we did all eyes were on us.
Chiron cleared his throat. "Heather, Logan, welcome to the Hermes cabin," he said. "You will be staying here until you get claimed. Your supplies and sleeping bags are over there."
Chiron pointed to an empty spot in the cabin where two sleeping bags resided. Logan and I walked over there and placed out things on the floor before laying down. I noticed Travis and waved to him. He smiled and waved back. I then noticed a boy identical to him sitting at his right. He waved to me as well and I gave him one back.
I put my things on the ground before taking out the picture of mom. Logan noticed the picture and sighed.
"I guess I'm not the only one who brought the picture, huh?" he joked. I guess he was trying to make me laugh, which worked as I chuckled before he took out a chocolate bar and handed it to me, which I accepted.
We were sitting together talking to each other until an older boy walked towards us. He had black hair and brown eyes. He looked like Nelly except she has blonde hair.
"Looks you guys got comfortable quickly," he said, leaning against the bar of a bunk bed. "How's camp life going so far?"
I looked at Logan and I saw he was looking at me as well. He gave me a 'you answer him' look. I gave him a 'no, you do it' look. We were staring at each other for a moment before I sighed.
"It's going...fine," I admitted. "Though I am not going to that Lava wall even if you threw me."
The boy laughed. "Don't worry," he said. "You're not the first one to say that." he then sat down criss cross on the floor in front of us. "I'm Luke, Luke Castellan and I'll be your cabin leader."
Logan looked at me but I was still looking at Luke. "Castellan?" I asked. He nodded. I huffed before putting my hands together. "Do you happen to have a sister named Penelope?"
Luke raised an eyebrow. "Yeah," he admitted. "But she left camp years ago because she passed the age limit. Why do you ask?"
I finally looked at Logan and he was still looking at me. Just as we were going to say something, heavy breathing came from the entrance. The entire cabin looked to see Nelly at the door looking like she was going to pass out.
"I cannot believe I fell asleep!" she said between breaths. "I am so sorry for that."
I just nodded as Luke stood up. He crossed his arms at Nelly and gave her an angry glare. Nelly finally noticed him and sighed.
"Why are you looking at me like that?" she asked. "I told you I was coming back!"
"Leaving for two weeks and coming back with two new demigods is not coming back. Not on my account." Luke pointed out.
"I know," Nelly said. "And I apologize."
Luke looked at us before sighing. "I forgive you." he said, which made Nelly sigh in relief.
"Thank you," she said. She then turned to us. "Again, sorry for leaving you guys."
I waved my hand dismissively. "It's fine." I said. "We forgot to wake you up."
"We forgot you were there at all honestly." Logan told Nelly, who laughed.
"Okay," she said. "Anyway, Chiron told me to tell you that dinner starts in two minutes."
With that Nelly left us alone. The others started to get up and Logan turned to them. "Okay, crew, line up, order of seniority."
Everyone lined up with Logan and I being dead last. Logan gave me a look 'cause I was the last one in line but I shrugged. I didn't mind being last. No one looked at me, they could only turn to me, which I hated but it was better than them tapping on me constantly. I was okay with this.
But I guess Logan wasn't since he just pushed me in front of him while he got behind me. I gave him an annoyed look but he just shrugged.
"You got here first." he told me.
"I don't care, let me be last, I don't care."
But he didn't budge so I just groaned, trying not to protest further as the line began moving then soon enough we arrived at the dining pavilion. There were twelve tables with the biggest one being at the front.
Luke told us that there were different tables for each of the different gods, like that wasn't obvious. We sat at the Hermes table and holy hell it was full. There was barely enough room for us to even place our plates. I groaned and was about to sit on the floor until Luke called us over to him. Once we made it over he gave us a sad smile.
"Sorry about the full table," he said. "Hermes cabin takes all unclaimed children as well as his own. And there are many unclaimed children here."
Logan sighed. "So we can sit on the floor then?" he asked sarcastically. He didn't wait for Luke's answer as he just grabbed my hand and dragged me to a spot near the hermes table where it had two extra chairs. We just sat there.
I then once again noticed Travis again. He scooted over to me and gave me a smile.
"So," he said. "We're cabin mates, huh?" he asked.
I shrugged. "I'm undetermined," I told him. "You don't know if I'll leave the next day or not."
Travis scoffed before looking up as he saw some tree-looking creatures bringing us a plate of mac and cheese.
"Sweet!" he said before grabbing a spoonful.
I took a spoonful as well and was amazed at how stringy it was.
"I am so glad I'm not lactose intolerant." I said as I looked at the mac and cheese on my plate.
"Same," Logan said.
"Wait until they bring out the ribs!" Travis said.
"Ribs?" I asked. And just as I said it, the creature brought us a plate of prime ribs. I took about four while Logan and Travis both took six.
I expected something to happen before we ate and I was right as I noticed kids taking their plates to this giant bronze fire. I saw Travis getting up and I gave him a confused look.
"Offering to the Gods," he answered. "They like the smell of the offerings."
Understandable I guess...but how would the fire smell from all the food? I just got up to take my plate to the fire. I laughed once I noticed Logan having his fork halfway in his mouth.
I couldn't keep my mouth shut. "Come on," I said as he got up.
We were up at the same time as Luke so we were just behind him.
"Hermes," I heard him whisper before dumping a bit of the mac and cheese into the fire.
I took a deep breath before I looked at Logan. He was giving me the same look. We didn't know who to send this offering to. But I didn't want to just keep the other waiting so I just took a deep breath and closed my eyes.
"Gods," I whispered. "Any of you who are out there. Please claim us soon. No rush. I just want someone to call dad."
"If you're listening," Logan continued. "Thank you. And if you are our father. Pay attention to us, just this once, please?"
"Thank you," we said in unison before we both took a scoop of mac and cheese as well as a rib and put it in the fire.
After that we turned around and went back to the table. Logan gave me one of his ribs and we finally began eating.
I noticed an empty goblet in front of me.
"It's magic," Travis told me. "Tell it what kind of drink you want in there and you'll get it."
I looked at the goblet for a moment. "Iced tea."
I watched in awe as the goblet filled itself with tea. It even had the right amount of ice cubes in it. I drank the tea slowly and it was refreshing.
"Root beer," Logan said. His cut slowly filled up with root beer, the fizzy bubbles reaching the top, but it didn't spill.
After a few minutes we finished eating and Chiron stomped his hoof, trying to silence everyone. We all got quiet as we waited for him to speak.
"Well, campers," he said. "This has been another wonderful day. Let us all rejoice and celebrate."
We all started clapping and cheering. I guess everyone is grateful to live another day.
Chiron spoke again. "I would like to welcome back Penelope Castellan, daughter of Hermes. And I would like to formally welcome Heather and Logan Agulera to our ever growing family."
Everyone clapped once again. It felt weird to see almost 300 faces staring at me, but I didn't dare to look away to see that I was embarrassed. It was the greatest weakness, right? Especially since there are probably children of Ares here.
After the clapping quieted down, Dionysus spoke. "Yeah, yeah. Now finish eating so I can go to sleep."
Everyone walked outside and there I saw a large campfire with a ton of seats. I was about to sit near my table when I felt someone grab my arm. I turned to see Travis once again beside me.
"You're sitting with me," he said before pulling me away. I looked back at Logan who was looking back at me. I just shrugged before I saw him walking after me.
Travis sat me down on an empty stump and he sat down beside me. I noticed that behind him were three other kids. One of them was the boy who waved at me earlier, while the other two I didn't recognise.
Travis smiled, "Heather," he said. "Welcome to the C.H.A.P!"
"Chap?" I asked.
"Camp Half-blood Alliance Pact," the younger boy answered. "Travis is the founder."
"And we're the only members," Travis added, motioning to him and the other three behind him. "We only accept the ones who we think are worthy of joining the pact."
"Oh," I said, amused. "And why do I qualify?"
"Because you're cool," the younger boy said.
"Ah," I said before chuckling. "So who's in the group?"
Travis's smile got bigger. "Okay, so there's me, the founder, then there's Connor, my brother," he pointed at the younger boy who waved at me. "Then there's Mackenzie Runes, daughter of Athena." he pointed to the girl behind Connor. "And then Chandler Kingston, Son of Demeter." he then pointed to a boy behind Makenzie.
Travis then pointed to me. "And then there's you, Heather."
I smiled. I never been or even thought about joining a school club before or an after school thing. And they just accepted me without a background check or anything. That was weird but also sweet.
"Okay," I said. "I'll join."
Travis smiled in relief as Makenzie and Connor high-fived each other.
"Oh, thank you, Heather," Mackenzie said. "I hate being the only girl here."
I chuckled as music started playing. We watched as the Apollo kids started singing. It gave me a warm feeling as it felt like a warm hug after a good cry. I don't know how he does it, but Apollo knows what to do when it comes to singing and making people feel better. He's like a jack of all trades. Just like his kids.
I guess I won't hate camp after all. I just hope I get more acceptance when my father claims me.
